I just watched half a dozen videos about measuring/bending a main hoop, and yours was by far the easiest to understand. Thanks for taking the time to make this!
I watched video twice the 3rd time while I bent my tube worked flawlessly thank you was life changing as far as how I bend my main hoops now can't wait to watch the rest of your videos!
Hi Matt. Did one very similar a copuple years ago. Used some scrap pcs. to bend as templates for the angles with sharpie marks at the bender start points. Drew it all out on the floor and used the templates to determine distances between bend start points. I left 3/4 inch clearence all around for headliner and trim install. In a roll over situation, the factory sheet metal will get bent and squashed anyway. The hoops are there to prevent YOU from getting squashed. Have to say you do excellent work. Love your channel.
Great work your measurements are on point question the numbers in your measurements like 680 and 260 is that in mm I'm doing a main loop for a ek coupe going off of what your doing like how your going step by step nice and simple
I can't find a previous video of yours showing why you use the 90 degree bend as a tool for measuring. If you use that 90 with the bend start and bend stop labeled and try to use that to measure the start and stop of a 60 degree bend wouldn't it be a shorter distance?
Hi Matt, Awesome video Mate . The information is well put together and easy to understand. I have built a few cages myself and I picked up alot from watching. Cheers.
I've been debating on building a rally car out of my 1993 Honda Civic, and I came across your video on how to build a roll cage!! It's funny as hell that I'm not the only one that sees a rally car out of this little hatchback!
I was looking forward to the second part to this it’s been 5years, I want to start my ek build for scca/nasa. Was this tubbed and was the cage ran threw the firewall with a tube front end
From the finished pictures looks like you took the roof off to weld the too of the bars. Is that easier than having the oads removible sonyou can drop the cage down ti weld?
How do you weld the tubing that is flush against the body of the car??? For example at 21:44 , you can see where the connection of tubing is flat up against the body ... how can you sneak the welding torch / nozzle back inside there? Is it just left unwelded????? A video for tips on those areas would be EPIC!!!!!!
Gota use tig torch with flex neck, gas lens, stubby cups with long tungsten stick out for those types of areas. Mig torch won't be able to reach in those tight areas since some necks don't bend. Usually other fabricators cut out the bottom floor were the plate is at on the left side, to weld the overhead tubes. Every builder is different. Or he just left it unwelded.
You are a true craftsman sir! Absolutely love your videos, always learn a lot. Thank you for your inspiration AND for sharing your knowledge! All the best from down under!!
Do you worry with squaring and leveling the chassis at all before welding the cage in its final position, and if so, where might I find good information on how to do so? Thanks for all the great information and video, sir! Cheers!
Amazing vid! I am learning a lot from you, thank you! Following up with a question, why did you make that secondary sharpie mark when measuring the second part of the 28 degree bend @ 7:01 in the center of your 90 degree tube and how does it help that process? Again, amazing stuff man!
Those floor boxes do not seem to be on plates, are they? If not, that main hoop will push them like a shear through the floor sheetmetal in a rollover.
Slight bend in the middle of the main hoop and leave the boxes or plates out so that you can fully weld your halo. Leave the boxes or plates until you finish your upper welds that might be restricted by the roof or roof pillars. Just a thought.
Hey mate just watched this wanna make a full show cage for my Citroen C4 coupe what gauge pipe did you use looked like it bent pretty simple great job mate
Awesome video! How do you weld on the very top of the cage? Do you cut holes on the floor to drop the hoop? Can you make a video? Learning lots from you as I want to build cages like in my car. Thanks!
Most of the time I build foot boxes and drop down off the boxes but it depends on the car. I will be doing a video showing every step start to finish so you will see the whole process soon. Cheers
Hey hi the video is awesome. Gained some knowledge about the roll cage. Just a suggestion next time I think u should have someone to help u to shoot the video. Keep it up. Loved it.
Nice cage. Beautiful welds. I am going to check out the rest of your videos I want to see how you get to the back side on some of those :-) A little long winded and shaky camera work but the quality of the info makes up for it in spades!
Top work, great skills! You may have already come across it but I would imagine Curve-o-mark's range of tools would be of use to you, too complicated for my work although I do use the pipe marking tool to accurately cut steel tube with a grinder as well as mark equidistant holes around the pipe. I've no experience in notching but it can do that too - not that you appear to be struggling! Anyhow, keep the welding videos coming, I'm sick of hearing yanks talk about "FRY THAT STEAK BABY" and "OLD TIMER TEACHES SICK WELDING TECHNIQUE"
I've watched like 12 fabrication vids like this and if I had the tools and materials I could make a whole car frame suspension is something I want to figure out I could just rob parts but it would restrict design
Is that 1.50 diameter tubing? I always build everything to pass NHRA 8.50 second 1/4 mile requirements unless it’s an off-road vehicle. “The tubing size requirement on 8.50 cages are 1 5/8-inch x . 118-inch mild steel or . 083-inch chromoly.” This is for the main components surrounding the driver, everything else can be 1.50”. Something to consider. I’m pretty sure this car will never see faster than 8.50 but why not build them that can? NHRA website- “The tubing size requirement on 8.50 cages are 1 5/8-inch x . 118-inch mild steel or . 083-inch chromoly. Keep up the good work!
Loving the vids. I want t build side impact bars for my vw trike and Ive found your stuff on bending and welding tips really helpful. Question what guage tubing would you recomend? If you search for boom trikes and look at the bars running along the floor thats the type of thing Im aiming at building
you make it look easy mate. where did you buy the tube bender from? I'm building an Auto grass car. Normally use a hydraulic pipe bender but need to get tighter radius this time, as going for a space frame chassis. so thinking of getting a bender like yours.
Hi Matt Great video. Very informative (like all your videos) I read in another comment that you use seamless CDS. I’m looking for tubing here in Denmark and the only tubing I seem to be able to get is E235+C. It meets the MSA requirements but it only has an elongation property of 6%. I’m a bit worried it is to low. What grade of CDS do you use? Best regards Daniel J
bravo! very nice end result there indeed! good to see a UK based fabricator making some decent videos on this stuff. good to see! just sub'd to your channel after watching a few videos. What do you think of the evo saw? I'm about to buy something but considering that or one of the femi NG table top bandsaws.
Thanks, Yeh its ok for a cheap saw, the blades are really expensive and its really easy to ruin the blades if what your cutting slips. I had a look at the makita version of the same thing which looks a lot better. I would probably buy that if I was buying another one.
Urchfab yeh the 12" Makita was also on my list for consideration. Toolstop are doing a bit of discount on it with 2 blades but it's still 450. But buy once cry once eh. We did use one of those evos in a previous job but as you say the blades seem expensive and I have had bad experience with their ordinary saw blades going blunt so so easy and crap tungsten inserts that are so weedy they can't be sharpened again.
A much easier way is to get an electricians conduit level that has a thumb screw that you mount on the end of your pipe as long as it is level all your bends will be on the same plane and you don't have to worry about it falling off
I just watched half a dozen videos about measuring/bending a main hoop, and yours was by far the easiest to understand. Thanks for taking the time to make this!
I've watched this video 4x and its amazing every time.
Man, your video is the most clear one on this topic, i've watched countless videos, and this one is clearly the best, thank you for sharing your work
This channel is ace. Why did it take me so long to stumble across it. I like your content it works and gets to the point. Keep up the good work.
Cheers
I watched video twice the 3rd time while I bent my tube worked flawlessly thank you was life changing as far as how I bend my main hoops now can't wait to watch the rest of your videos!

Matt 1:54 you say there is a link on how to make that 90 deg bend tube piece , cant find link or the vid man , can you link us up please?
I was looking forward to the second part to this it’s been 5years, I want to start my ek build for scca/nasa.

Yeh I'm out in the sticks Bud
Great work and thanks for letting us see how you do it
I was almost made in England but my gramps moved to the states from Carlisle. Greetings from Denver.
You are a true craftsman sir! Absolutely love your videos, always learn a lot. Thank you for your inspiration AND for sharing your knowledge! All the best from down under!!
Peter Mallik fuck me an Aussie with manners
Must be a kiwi
Do you worry with squaring and leveling the chassis at all before welding the cage in its final position, and if so, where might I find good information on how to do so? Thanks for all the great information and video, sir! Cheers!
He sets out level on sills and strut towers. Said at start
Nice job Matt!!!
New car, new cage, watching the same Urch video as last time to make sure I measure correctly.
My memory isn't what it used to be.
Would be helpful to show how you measure angles of the door pillar side hoops. Main hoop is pretty easy to figure out.
That would be great if he did!
Amazing vid! I am learning a lot from you, thank you! Following up with a question, why did you make that secondary sharpie mark when measuring the second part of the 28 degree bend @ 7:01 in the center of your 90 degree tube and how does it help that process? Again, amazing stuff man!
What is the bending tool call???? Besides bender
What tool to you use for bending the tube? Also what spec of tube do you use for cages?
Great tips, solid cage work! Cheers Mate

I haven't made any yet but I sure do want to make a roll cage with my everlast welder soon.
Hey mate just watched this wanna make a full show cage for my Citroen C4 coupe what gauge pipe did you use looked like it bent pretty simple great job mate
Soo informative. I can't believe I didn't find your channel until now. Thanks and keep up the great work. New sub earned.
Stunning job, Matt!!
Excellent.
How are you gauging the angle mate as if I put my angle finder to that level on a digital one it says 120degrees
Thank you for this info!
I know what I'll be doing soon haha
Awesome video! How do you weld on the very top of the cage? Do you cut holes on the floor to drop the hoop? Can you make a video? Learning lots from you as I want to build cages like in my car. Thanks!

Your channel is really helping me with my car restoration...going to have a go at a roll cage but how do you stop the bends from kinking?
Fill it with sand is one way is what i do
Thank you for tricks! Finished cage looks so beautiful! Keep it up, clean work !
Does that main hoop get installed with a few degrees of lean?
Did you hear the disappointment in his voice? "1 mm off the roof" incredible skills. Glad I found your channel a couple of weeks ago..
Excellent job, respect.
What tube bender are you using? 🤙
Nice cage. Beautiful welds. I am going to check out the rest of your videos I want to see how you get to the back side on some of those :-)
A little long winded and shaky camera work but the quality of the info makes up for it in spades!
Just a quick one; what material and wall thickness are you using for the cage and can you use ERW tubing?
It depends what regs your building to but most of mine are built using 1, 3/4" 12 swg and 1, 1/2" 12 swg seamless CDS
Thanks very much for your reply. Like your work and easy to follow guidelines..
Top work, great skills!

Trying to learn how to bend. Still unclear where things go on the tube bender. Where is the starting point on the bender?
We have CNC bending machine! You can bend it automatically if you have our machine! Visit and contact us,please! www.g-cnc.com
This is a sick vid. Top quality work too 👍
cheers
matt what pipe bender did you use for this
What's the size of the tubing ?
Hi Matt, great contebnt, I've just started tube bending and was wondering how you calculate or find/measure the end of a bend ?
Hey what gauge material do you use for the foot boxes?
Hi great job! Are you? and do you need to be certified to fab and weld in cages for motorsport use?
Helluva craftsman!!
Is that 1.50 diameter tubing?

What tube bender is that mate ?
Where did you buy the tubing bender?
What was the tool you used to keep the hoop level when bending.....it was resting on something that looked easily adjustable and rolled?
Very useful information I subscribed keep it up
Loving the vids. I want t build side impact bars for my vw trike and Ive found your stuff on bending and welding tips really helpful. Question what guage tubing would you recomend? I got it from stakesys. its a jmr. Cheers
ment to ask last time, what size die did u use for the cage (CLR).
I cant remember off the top of my head, il check on monday.
Hey, did you find out which CLR you are using?
Hi Matt
Great video. Very informative (like all your videos)

I will have to find an invoice to check for you, I can't remember off the top of my head.
Urchfab Thank you very much! That would be of great help!
Beautiful work man!!
Very good job
What tubing bender are you using - im thinking of getting a JD2
Its a JMR
What material and size you used on the tubes.. thanks
I was just about to ask the same question... then I saw your comment. Let's hope we get an answer :)
Good work keep up the builds
what tube bender do you use and where did you get it ? awesome vid
Cheers its a JMR bender, I got it from stakesys.co.uk about 5 yrs ago.
Dude your work is awesome! 💪💪👌 you just got a new sub!!
Very well done. cheers
Thanks
Nice work.
Can’t find the link how to mark the bends up
Incrivel seu trabalho, ate parece que esta modelando com arame!
Benetech software will help with the cage dimensions .
Be worth having some cheap neodymium magnets to help hold things for you :)
Top Job mate 👍🤪
At 9:51 and 12:11, a lamb can be heard bleating. The Fabshop is on a farm?
Pretty much.
How do you get 62° from that angle mine reads 118°
Anthony Aguiar lol ur bad at geometry. 62 + 118 = 180. 180 being a straight angle. So you are reading the angles in reverse lol.
bravo! very nice end result there indeed! good to see a UK based fabricator making some decent videos on this stuff. good to see! just sub'd to your channel after watching a few videos. My god man, that is a beautiful cage for a Civic. What wall thickness are you using?
Got always be thinking or weld yourself into a corner literally lol .
Never fully realized how involved a cage build is ...
A much easier way is to get an electricians conduit level that has a thumb screw that you mount on the end of your pipe as long as it is level all your bends will be on the same plane and you don't have to worry about it falling off
I will look for one, Cheers
did you buy a bender? o do you make it?
and what type of pipe are?
No I bought it, its seamless cds.
@@Urchfab thaks :3
Invest in a ‘Tubella’ that JWR looks hard work!
Nah shes all good, keeps me warm in winter!
some nice welds mate
Nice job!!!
Thanks
Cheers matey 👍.
clean af bro!
great cage!
Love the videos
bloody genius
Top work
Personally, I would use PVC plumbing pipe, bend it with a heat gun and make a lightweight template.
Tim Collins obviously you know fuck all about fuck all then
Wow nice
