    Top 3 NAS for Plex of the Year nascompares.com/2019/12/18/be...
    If you are looking to upgrade your multimedia setup in 2019, chances are that you have already heard of the great multimedia application, Plex Media Server (PMS), that allows you to access all your movies and boxsets anywhere in the world, on almost any device! Plex is supported by everything from Smart TVs and Consoles, through to iOS and Android Phones - this incredibly accessible and intuitive media application provides all your owned media to you, as well as dressing it with titles, descriptions, background studio information, cast lists and recommendations for other shows! It is the perfect multimedia tool for those that want the colourful and information user interface similar to Netflix and Amazon Instant, but want to enjoy their own media, rather than stream/rent media from an online source! If you are looking to build your perfect Plex Media Server, it is highly recommended that you use a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive. Each NAS drive arrives with a dedicated operating system and user-interface. This UI is accessible via a web browser like Chrome or Firefox, as well as multiple mobile apps and PC clients. Each brand has a very different software build quality/priority and it is recommended you choose a brand that is best suited to your environment for ease of access (e.g Synology is very similar to Mac OSX and QNAP NAS is very similar to Android). Additionally, you will most likely be using the NAS drive for more than Plex, in an effort to make the most of your purchase, as different NAS brands provide differing levels of support for backups, DLNA media, Surveillance, VMs and more.

    Glad this vid was recommended to me. Some really great tips here. I just upgraded to a beefy Synology 1019+ NAS after a parity controller failure in my previous machine (not a disk failure, it lost its RAID 5 redundancy capability). Regarding adding a cache, wrt Plex there are several vids out there verifying that it’s only benefit to the user experience is in the display of thumbnails. This makes sense really, since most of Plex involves the sequential reading and delivery of large files that weren’t previously/recently loaded. A cache is great when working with spreadsheets or collaborating in a meeting on development of a presentation. It’s benefit to a Plex user is probably not as much.

    Thanks for this video, Robbie. Plex stopped working for me a few weeks ago when sending 1080i .mkv video to Apple TV 4K. I had corresponded to you in the past regarding Emby, and noted that Emby solved a problem that didn’t exist since Plex works so well. I’ve now found that Emby solves the problem when Plex stops working correctly. I’ve pretty much given up on Plex due to the 1080i issues to the Apple TV 4K (works fine sending the same video files to Roku), but I’ll try to get Plex working again using the tips that you’ve noted in this video.

    Great video! Enabling hardware transcoding was a nice idea! Without hw transocing, my DS920+ was struggling with 720p transcoding of my 4K gopro videos at 99% CPU usage. Now with hw transcoding it transcodes 4K 200 MbPS videos to 40 MbPS 4K videos while cpu is at idle (10-15%)! Thanks!

    was really hoping you'd show how to implement these in settings. i have the ability to add RAM or SSD cache but just sticking it in isn't the whole picture. id love a follow up video or something where you actually go through the plex settings and/or synology settings that need to be changed.

      I would pop it in and check out your settings and see if it recognizes the drive, the maybe it will have a cache setting you can just toggle the rest from there. Have you gotten your ssd set up for Cache yet?

    Objet:
    1) Can you confirm my reasoning?
    2) SSD for plex, is it better cached or static raid 1 with QTS installed?
    Did you have burn your SDD M.2 with cache?
    3) if I have to add memory?
    5) With the SSD There is a big difference to stranscoder a film 4k, I did not do the test, But I'm septic?
    Hello,
    January 2019 I bought a QNAP TVS-672XT with 2 hard drives HDD 7200tr / min of 6 to raid and 1 disk of 10To.
    Here are the details of my configuration:
    Actual configuration:
    -2x Toshiba N300 6TB Hard Drives (raid 1)
    -1x Toshiba 10TB Hard Drive (raid 0)
    -Memory of origin 8GO (2x4GO)
    Future configuration (expected in 3 days):
    **-4x 6TB Toshiba N300 hard drives (raid 5)**
    -1x Toshiba 10TB Hard Drive (raid 0)
    -Memory of origin 8GO (2x4GO)
    **-2x Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus M.2 PCIe NVMe 1TB**
    I'd like to have your opinion?
    1) After having looked at the forum and the internet for a long time, I will go for a raid 5
    The system raid 5 allows a reading much faster than a raid 1
    2) I ask your advises, because I do not know if I have to use the 2 SSD M.2 (2x Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus M.2 PCIe NVMe 1TB)
    For Caching or would it be better to put static in Raid 1 and install QTS and plex on it.
    Would the stock nvme heatsinks from qnap be suffice or should I upgrade to these after market ones: 2 Pack M.2 NVMe Aluminum Heatsinks Cooler with Nano Silicone Thermal Pad
    Because the problem is that the SSD cache is fast but it Burning quickly. I had experience on my synology rack. they all burned.
    3)3) if I have to add memory ? or if I can stay on the original memory 8GO (2x4GO)?
    Thank You

    If you have an older nas or one without hardware transcoding and want to run plex without hiccups you could also buy a nvidia shield pro to house your plex server and continue using your nas for storage. The shield pro runs Plex quite well and can handle the transcoding without issue. Just point it to your shared folder on your nas with your media and you're good to go.

    • @djpdjp2488
      @djpdjp2488 День назад

      How well does shield pro handle 1080p @ 60 fps and uncompressed audio? 1080p and stereo should be okay for me when not direct play to theater system. My qnap ts262 with 4 gb of ram can only barely handle 720p and AAC stereo format over LAN. I’ve been told the CPU is too slow and not to bother trying to fix the issue with cache or ssd in general. Thanks

    Great video once again.
    Does anybody know if using m.2 cahce in Qnap Plex server, can you also set transcoding temp directory to that m.2 cache drive?

  • @tornadotj2059
    @tornadotj2059 4 года назад

    What about changing your transcode directory to /tmp if you have the memory to support it? Also I'd like to know if adding matching memory moves the celeron based Synology DSxxx+ NAS systems into dual channel mode and is there a speed increase? I have not been able to find an answer to this.

    I have a NAS raid 5 I'm just using it to sit the media on there. Plex is set up on my pc no problems so far apart from vc1 and dts so I use the plex app on my tv for stereo. If I want surround I use my nvidia shield tv app direct to my amp for lossless audio and as I have no 4k on my plex I don't really have any issues. All movies ripped in mkv and no compression. Bit bit from mkv to my nas. 26tb so far used.

    Great video, I'm about to buy a Nas, and your videos are very helpful. I've almost decided on a Synology ds918+, but not I'm not sure whether to buy the 6 bay model, DS1618+, instead... Would you buy them now in late 2019, or should I wait for a newer release? Also, have you looked at the Infuse app vs Plex? Would love to hear your thoughts on that.

    • @tornadotj2059
      @tornadotj2059 4 года назад

      Either of those work very well as a Plex server. Turn on hardware transcoding and under Transcoder (in Plex) set your transcode temporary directory to /tmp. Watch your memory usage, you may need to add more but it's worked great on mine. Key here is to get the Synology with the + at the end of the model number, and make sure it's a Celeron and not an Atom. I'm running the DS218+ (I only wanted something cheap to test with, I have several servers in the house) and it's been great and I don't plan on moving back to a server. What I have not been able to find out is if the Synology devices we are talking about here will benefit from dual-channel memory. I installed an 8GB memory module instead of a 4 (Mine has 4 onboard) and didn't think about the dual channel thing until it was too late.

    I was hoping for some info on buffering issues. I have a brand new Synology DS220j running 4 days now and have experienced a buffering issue while watching a MasterChef show via Plex.

    I want to play my Nikon Z6 and OSMO 4K using Plex on DS218+ with Plex to Chromecast it to TV. So transcode is necessary but i experienced stuttered playback. I do not wish to enable off-line transcode because of storage concern and the time it takes before my family member can start watching. IF video station which supports hw transcode cannot handle the transcode does it means buying a plex pass will not help? (My Osmo pocket records 4K at h264 at 97770Kbps)

    My library is really loading slow.. is there a quick fix in the setting that can resolve this? I have a pretty large library 1,000 tv shows and almost 8,000 movies. I’m using a Asustor nimbustor as my NAS it has 4gb of ram but it’s only using like 1/2 of that at the most..

    Hi I need help! i have a synology 923 plus 4 bay. I’ve upgraded all the parts. I have 2 ssd for cache. I have 32gb of ram and a 10gb Ethernet port. I have mkv file movies on my server which avgs about 50gb per movie. They all run fine at home but outside of home plex keeps buffering and it says server not powerful enough…my internet upload speeds are capped at 40-70mb help please!!

    I'm confused about ssd cache, You said to match SDD with about 10% of HDD So if an HDD is 10TB I would install 1TB SDD? Now My nas will be set up in Raid 5 with 6 Seagate Exos X16 14TB HDD's Do i need to match the 70 usable disk space or just the size of one HDD 14TB? If that is the case I would need a 1.5TB SDD or 2TB SDD? Also Can I used M.2 slots in place of SDD slots? as I have purchased the Synology DS1621+ and this unit does bring M.2 slots, Would there be an advantage of using the M.2 slots instead of the SDD Slots? Thanks.
    Anyone, feel free to answer. Thanks in advance.

    The only discrete GPU worth talking about is the Quadro P2000, and that's 400 quid right off the bat. AMD's GPUs have a rubbish transcoder (basically hardly any software has an even half-assed implementation), and nVidia's drivers block >2 streams on anything GeForce (might be an exception for the drivers used by the Synology NVR, not sure). See nVidia's NVENC support matrix for more details.

    Raid stands for Inexpensive disks. Once in an array the disks are not independent in any sense. I don't know where this Independent nonsense started, but in the beginning it stood for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks.
