    Thanks for this video. I use Plex but my videos are all stored on an external hard drive connected to my PC, which isn’t ideal. I’d thought about installing a NAS but it’s always ended up in my “too hard” basket. This has been the inspiration I need to go ahead and do it.

    I also grew up with The Last Unicorn and can straight up quote it from memory. I watched the VHS so much it wore out. I got the DVD when I was in college - game changer. I want to say this may have been the first movie I ripped to my Plex server way back in 2012....

      I've been using WD Reds for over half a decade but to each their own. :) I don't have any brand loyalty in terms on HDDs, I just choose whatever I know will work.

      The only drivers that ever failed for me were my Seagate Ironwolfs, after 3 failures i switched to wd Reds and also try buying different drive batches from different retailers to keep the chances for multiple failures down.

    Good stuff. My only addition is that some drives are louder than others, and if someone keeps their NAS next to a TV as a media box, they might want to go with fewer, slow, and quiet instead of many, fast and noisy drives.

    Great video setting up Synology NAS running Plex. Another great option is to repurpose a PC by running TrueNAS with Plex installed.
    This can be a great low cost, easy to use system that will come in at a reasonable price point. Fast, stable, and easy to set up. It could be a good alternative solution.

    I use Seagate exos 20tb drives in mine. Asustor 6bay gen 2. Its the quietest nas ive experienced. I only use the for storage but have an optiplex 3070 9th gen intel i5 with quick sync. It does the job with a raid 5.

    I have a Plex server within my HTPC. I have some much larger drives ready 2 x 14TB and 2 x 12 TB ready for a NAS but currently all my data is on my HTPC is on Windows. Have you ever done a video about transfering data on a Windows PC to a NAS where I would probably want it in RAID 5. I'm a bit paranoid about losing data which has been collected over many years.

    If I had a mac mini, with nothing to do, would it be better to run plex media server there freeing the up the processor on the NAS? Or is there a trade-off that negates this because the storage is on a different machine?

    Love what you explain, but.....would you happen to have steps for someone like me who just bought a NAS (Synology DS1522+) and I used to use my PC for the PLEX server (was trying it out), but now when I migrated all of the media files over to the new NAS......if I shut down my PC, everything disappears. I am doing something wrong, but not sure why. Any step by step instructions would be great. Thank you for this video though. I am still very new to this.

    I'm still very new to this as I never bothered to use my Synology DS215j as anything other than network storage. But it just collapsed so I now need to upgrade.
    Since all my media on there play fine on my (old) LG and Samsung TVs, even 4K h265 on the LG, do I need the pass or can I just use the free version?

    zip or gzip wont usually make media files smaller so wont speed the transfer up (you can't easily compress binary). a tar will allow you to backup only one file instead of many, but with files of that size you aren't gaining anything I don't think.

  • @jimjones1586

    Thanks Shannon can this Nas transcode on the fly?
    Eg HD to SD in a stream & or change to different fil formats.
    Or would I need separate encoding software that needs to convert the file before streaming?
    Im new to this, please excuse if its a silly question

    • @ShannonMorse

      Yes, I chose this NAS specifically because it can do transcoding, along with the upgraded speeds and hardware.

    Liked most of the detail, but find it weird that even though you are using synology for their "special sauce" decided to stick with RAID instead of SHR, and also for the drives if you are looking to save money go for the enterprise version. They are cheaper than NAS versions and have better performance and warranty. i.e Exos over Iron Wolf.

    • @ShannonMorse
      @ShannonMorse  9 месяцев назад +2

      If you're going for cost-effective, then definitely look into SHR and enterprise hdds! I have a personal preference for wd reds as my old ones lasted me well over half a decade (plus some!) and they're what I've been buying for a long time, and I was able to find mine on a really sweet deal. But yeah, if you don't have a personal preference you can definitely choose different drives!

    • @ClaudeAlexandreRochatProfile
      @ClaudeAlexandreRochatProfile 7 месяцев назад

      You have a good point, SHR is much more flexible. Raid is in my opinion not recommended unless you rely understand the difference. Also make sure to buy one with hardware transcoding if you don't want your CPU to go to 100% usage every time you play a video.
