FIRST SAMURAI is one of my favorite games 😺👍🕹️.
I had it for my Amiga 500 back in the early 2010's
The game may have been challenging,
but after practicing as much as i could,
i did manage to get to the Subway level 😺👍🕹️.
And then the game is over 😹.
    FIRST SAMURAI is so magnificent,
it even made me play everyday on my
Amiga 500 and also think about the old
    japanese 🇯🇵 Samurai movies -
such as from Akira Kurosawa and
    Toshiro Mifune 😺👍.
I even wanted to grab into my pens ✏️
and practice for drawing some of the Samurai and Ninja art works 🖋️🖊️✏️🖍️ -
Stan Sakai's USAGI YOJIMBO style 😺👍.
The Commodore 64 version of FIRST SAMURAI looks so absolutely brilliant,
i definitely want to give a try for it 😹👍🕹️.
    Thank you 😸😺👍🕹️.
    A big retrospective like 👍🕹️
    from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.

There was a game called Second Samurai which was to be released immediately after first as sequel (and it did on Amiga) . There were even some screenshots in magazines of C64 version, but as Commodore was already tumbling down, it never materialized. Nevertheless, in C64 community rumors long persisted of supposedly finished or almost finished game waiting somewhere to see light of the day ... 😁

  • @Arley42

I had this on my amiga 500 and found the art style really effective. The dragon boss near the start genuinely used to make me think it was eating my guy with its horrible teeth.
But despite how hard I found it, I was in love with the main theme and would sometimes load it just to listen.

It shows what can be accomplished if you spend the time working on the look of the game, including using more than 2 frames for animation. I appreciate that in a game. First time I was pleasantly surprised by such excellent animation was with "Impossible Mission". The running animation was top notch for the time! (Great game as well!)

Yeah, I only really played the Amiga version of this game but the C64 version is just about as good as you could possibly hope. The Amiga also had a brilliant intro, explaining the events thus far, which looked and sounding amazing! Unfortunately it doesn't have much of an end-sequence but that wasn't uncommon back then. The Hallelujah sample from Händel's Messiah was also a memorable touch; which my religious mate that I mentioned in your SWIV review found more than a little out of place however. 😅

Yes, 1992 was too late for me. Although I had one since it first came out, I was in college and was using a 386. It was silly though, I had to terminal into the University's VAX mainframe to use their email. I wonder if I could have used CCGMS or something similar to have done that instead of the generic PC clone we had.

I missed this title due to the fact that it was made so much later. I was primarily using the PC at this point and didn't get a chance to do much with my ol' C64 (funny how I come back to those old games now). I love this style of game! I'm a huge fan of the side-scrolling Metroidvania-style action/puzzle games. So this looks right up my ally! The question now is... play the C64 version? Or the Amiga version? Hmm... I'm leaning towards Amiga. LOL

    • @CheekyCommodoreGamer

It certainly is funny how we've all come back to these old retro games now isn't it really... like myself, as soon as the technology became available to freely obtain all of these games, thats when my interest spurred once again. I'd definitely recommend the C64 version for a playthrough just for how much it pushed the machine to its limits in terms of technical expertise - however, if its graphics and sound you're into then the Amiga version was the Daddy of the two! 😇🕹️👌
