  • THREE CHEERS FOR THE REDSKINS, by Steve Sabol
George Allens over the hill gang, and one lucky rookie, Mke Fanucci
    The 1972 NFC CHAMPIONS.
The Over-the-Hill Gang was the George Allen-coached Washington Redskins team of the early 1970s, so named due to the large number of veteran players on the team. Many of those players also played for Allen when he coached the Los Angeles Rams from 1966-1970.
The start of the Over-the-Hill Gang was the 1971 NFL Draft. Of the Redskins first five picks that year, they only used one (Fanucci), deciding to trade the rest. Allen had decided to build his team with experienced players who "did not have to mold to the NFL game". One of these trades was for Billy Kilmer, a quarterback who had been playing for the New Orleans Saints. As a starter for the Redskins, Kilmer threw for 3,869 yards and 32 touchdown passes. More importantly, he led the Redskins to back-to-back playoff appearances and became the first Redskins quarterback to start a Super Bowl.

George turned the Redskins around and made them a playoff team. Another coach that could turn a team around real quick was Chuck Knox. He did that with the Rams, Bills, and Seahawks.

Does anyone know where to find the original film that this video was referencing? Which episode did they say Fanucci got cut? My dad was on that taxi squad and I’m desperately looking for some footage.

Respect to George Allen but his philosophy of playing veterans instead of rookies was stupid. Young players really make a team a team, yes veterans are important but you need to have young guys on the team to give it strength and durability

He's always been a grossly over rated coach.

Well Fries, your response showed up in my notifications but it's not showing up in the comments. So I don't know if you can see this. Allen was around from a very long time ago. So long I think he was one of the early users of the forward pass. Or it may have been shotgun formation.
So he was labeled as being so innovative because of that, and it took on a life of it's own.
He has his championship so practically all coaches who get one will get labeled as great. But he was archaic, almost to the point of being a stereotype with being so set on going with veterans even if they were clearly not the best player to be out there.
      High school type stuff.

@@gregorylagrange the shotgun formation was the cowboys and forward pass was in already. He was way too conservative and opted for slower pace game. He is a master motivator and organizer. He did not allow Sonny Jorgensen to progress and liked Billy’s style
