You nailed it when you said "I buy into high end audio not only because I want to listen to the performance, but I want to experience the performance". Thanks for a great review Thomas. Full disclosure, I am the Wharfedale rep for Canada. I would simply like to compliment the review style, much as I did for the interview that you did. When speaking to dealers and the public alike, I always point out that there is no right and wrong in audio, as it is perception based. Different people hear and like different things. More bass, less bass, smooth or hyper detailed, these things are easy to change, but to your point, making applause sound like real clapping, or causing you to think that the entire orchestra is in your room and not the speakers, that is more difficult. When the instrument sounds like an actual instrument being played in your room, you know that you have found something special. Sometimes boring is the most exciting thing a speaker can be, if that means it just plays music that sound like, well...music. Thanks again.

Hi Thomas, thank you for the highly informative review on the Elysian 4. You are a blessing to audiophiles like me, providing valuable opinion and insights to guide our decisions. I recently bought a pair of Evo 4.4 guided by Tharbamar's and Steve Guttenberg's insightful reviews of Evo 4.2 and 4.3 respectively. I am very happy with my decision, as the evo 4.4 provides what i was looking for, a highly detailed and natural sound that is non-fatiguing, realistic soundstage, yet dynamic. To my ears, they offer me a much more realistic and enjoyable sound overall, compared to the B&W603s (which I am now using for my home theater system), and the Magneplanar 1.6 and 1.7 which I owned in the past. Your review now sets my sights next on the Elysian 4 . Thank you

Wharfedale are doing good things lately with incredible value . I recently home demoed the low cost Wharfedale Evo 4.4s. and was very impressed. Bottom end through the twin Kevlar drivers was tight, and expressive. The A.M.T tweeter combined with the soft dome midrange sounded airy and spacious with good vocal presence Very special floorstanders indeed for the price.

@@kohnfutner9637 I auditioned many floorstanders at home over a period of a few months. The Wharfedale Evo 4.4s did also have downsides when comparing to other speakers. They where not as fast or dynamic as I prefer and there was some loss in finer details. But the speakers I did eventually settle on have cost nearly double the price of the Wharfedale.

    You just got another subscriber
I am still breaking in a new pair of EVO 4.4 and I was wondering how much of an upgrade would Elysians be. You answered every single question I might have had, and more.
I also like your take on analytical vs immersive listening. Being a musician for decades, analytical listening is something I just had to learn to live with. There was a period in my life when I simply could not listen to music without analyzing every single detail, not just in terms of sound quality and resolution, but also in terms of composition, harmonic structure, performance quality, tempo, all the stuff you pay attention to when recording, but with time I managed to merge the two into a rewarding and fulfilling listening experience.
I am now taking baby steps into the world of higher-end audio and I am loving it.

Seriously thinking on pulling the trigger on the 4.1 or 4.2 but reviews are not as abundant on the 4.1 I've had the older diamond series and loved em. As for the Elysian I won't be able to afford them or ever be allowed to afford them if I could, unless wharfedale wants to send me a pair 😁. Hello Thomas! After having watched a number of your videos, I decided to subscribe to your channel. Your reviews are well thought out, without unnecessary words or 'audiophile' terminology that often gets used improperly and is therefore also misunderstood by people. I think your videos have merit because you seem very decent and honest, rare traits these days I might add.
As for Wharfedale, while I cannot comment on the model at hand, I can say they are a very good company and in fact, a lot older and larger than most people realize. They make everything themselves, including some raw materials, so there are really a handful of companies like that still left in the world. My nephew has a replica of their vintage open baffle 15' speaker which was meant to compete with Quad ESLs of the time, but with much improved dynamics. They take up most of the living room but they are gorgeous-sounding.
Anyway, I just thought I'd say 'Hello' and let you know how much I enjoy watching your videos. Best wishes, Antunka

@13:41 sounding good on my Klipsch 450c (I have all other speakers turned down to adjust the center).
It sounds like the instrument is dialating and contracting, getting bigger and smaller and moving around in a circle side to side. That sounds like crazy way to describe sound but that's the impression I got. And the bass was tight, immersive and powerful, not over done or bloated. I heard the direct strike of the drum and the decay of the diaphragm going back into resting position: a nice little hold over of thunderous boom after the pow strike of the kick peddle / drum stick / hand. Can't tell what actually stuck the drum to make it bellow.
Typically this is more to the credit of the speaker you have than my own speakers, or at least, 50/50.

Hi Thomas. I've heard other reviews of these speaker's and nothing but praise can be said of them. I wish my room was large enough to cope with these beauties, as they sound ideal for what I'm looking for in a speaker. I'm hoping that their baby brother would be ideal in my room, but I'm probably going to need to go for the Evo 4.4's instead. Great review once again.

In my advancing age, I appreciate a good top end and clean mids: the bass really is secondary: I like bass, but I don't want it to overpower the music. Bass is for authority, emotion and excitement, etc. but does little to bring actual enjoyment and pleasure for long listening sessions. The best listening IMO is done at low volume but where you can still hear all the nuances and details of the music. I also enjoyed it turned to true to life levels, or a level that seems true to life to me.

    • @johnlong9862

Fantastic content, Thomas, and very well explained too 👍
I'm quite familiar with the superb Wharfedale Elysian 4 speakers. In fact with a number of Wharfedale speakers. I own but unfortunately don't use now the Evo 4.4 ... I'll explain why in a sec.
The Wharfedale Elysian 4's are basically high end speakers of very good value.
The look and finish is beautiful, and in all finishes too. Wharfedale went the extra mile here.
I was also really impressed with the Wharfedale 11 series. A lot of research, money and high end tech was focused in the right places, especially the floor standers. Sadly not a lot of decent exposure or pro reviews, and now the 12 series is launching with the 11 series fast becoming a missed (discontinued) opportunity. Here's my crazy moment, and a spanner in the audio works of common sense ...
Want a pair of Wharfedale Elysian 4's on the cheap ... Well, maybe not the finish but in sound the Diamond 11.5's are very close in many respects, practically the same size cabinets and drivers ... Most never discovered that if you treat them (the 11.5's) like high end audiophile speakers they actually sound very high end indeed. At 34kg per speaker and built extremely well the finish is the only obvious compromise considering the price (though not that bad with piano gloss front baffles)
The Evo 4.4 is fabulous in the mid/upper mid and lower treble which makes them sound incredibly detailed but also very "HiFi" in overall presentation, which many apparently love. Frequently extremes i.e. real Bass and top end seem to take a back seat to my ears.
The Wharfedale Elysian 4's are superbly balanced in their presentation as you noted Thomas i.e. no frequency dominates with its seamless integration making almost any well recorded track sound believable and enjoyable.
The Diamond 11.5's can achieve a very similar presentation - including that fabulous bass extension.
But you have to treat them just like a pair of Elysian 4's to expose their potential.
Well, there's my moment of madness. The Evo 4.4 are going to my second eldest son as a gift tomorrow ... Maybe the bug will bite giving us a common interest 😅
