Actually you have the order reversed. He started writing it when Keith Whitley died and the whole first verse was about Keith. When he says you are no stranger to the rain is a direct reference to Keith Whitley song I'm no stranger to the Rain. He finished the song A couple of years later when his brother passed away
George Jones was a good friend and mentor to Vince Gill. That is why this is effecting Vince so much. This performance is so hard to keep a dry eye through. The strength of Patty to take over when she knew Vince was struggling was great to see. This guitar solo in the middle really isn't a part of the song, it was just Vince regaining his composure and letting his guitar speak for him, it was beautiful.
Patty Lovelace doesn't always get the credit she is due, such a great voice! Don't feel bad, I've cried a little every time I've seen this. Sweet Pea sure loved the Possum,
Vince was close with George. Jones nicknamed him Sweet Pea. But he said in a podcast that it was hearing Patty’s voice come in that broke him up. Then he improvised the guitar solo to give himself some time to get it together. Shout out to Garth Brooks down front for being the first to stand up to support him.
I add my vote for you to react to this one.... I suggest the one that is just Patty and her small group live.... in many ways, with this song in particular, a duet distracts from the emotion she has for her Kentucky roots.
2 things, yes Patty is INCREDIBLE. You should look into her stuff. She helped make the early-mid 90s country awesome. Second, Vince Gill is one of my favorite but he is also one of the best guitar players to watch. He plays incredibly with Carrie Underwood in the video How Great Thou Art. Also a good one to check out if you haven’t. ❤
Patti had retired from performing for 13 years until Chris Stapleton asked her to perform last year with him in a fund raising concert after their home state of Kentucky was flooded. She now back performing, has been inducted into the hall of fame. Their performance at that concert of You’ll Never leave Harlan Alive and at the CMA is stunning, great blend of voices, both their father’s were coal miners, so heartfelt and she has still got it
If you don’t have a whole new respect for Patty Loveless after watching that, you weren’t paying attention. That’s two people who care deeply for one another and sing together better than most siblings. She is phenomenal. If you really want to hear what she’s capable of vocally, watch herLIVE performance of “you’ll never leave Harlan alive”.
Vince's comment "It's my belief they don't make those shoes anymore" is a reference to George Jones song "Who's gonna fill their shoes". Another true classc.
Vince and George were very close. They play this song a lot at funerals since Vince put the song out. Patty songs, You Don't Even Know Who I Am and You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive. Vince's song Nobody Answers When I Call Your Name also has Patty singing
Vince and Patty have been friends for a long time. I seen them when they toured together in the mid 90s. One show Patty’s guitar player had something happen so Vince stepped in and played guitar for her during her set then came out and played his set. Over the last few years Vince has been playing guitar for the Eagles.
My heart just broke for Vince during this performance. Normally, the song breaks me. I had this song played at my son’s funeral. Patty has a wonderful catalogue of music. Yes, you should definitely dive into her music! Vince always makes that guitar talk!
This was at George Jones' funeral - whose body was in the closed casket down front. (George Jones helped Vince get his career started, and nicknamed Vince “Sweet Pea” ). George had struggled with alcohol and drugs for several years before he became a Christian and sobered up, and Vince had a half-brother who had struggled with alcohol and drugs and died in 1993 in his 50s of a massive heart attack. In fact, because George's wife was a Christian and helped him and loved him all through the struggles, George - in a prayer one night - told God that if God would help him he would give up the vices - and he did. According to George's wife, when George died, he had been in the hospital for five days, of which George had been in a comma the last three. George had just laid with his eyes closed and never said a word. Then, as George's wife and his doctor stood at the foot of the hospital bed, George opened his eyes, looked at the ceiling and said, "I've been looking for you. I'm George Jones", and then died. George's wife says she knows George was talking to God. Vince had written this song for his brother after his brother's death, and that's why it is so special to Vince. Patty Loveless was a good friend to both, and was there to help Vince get through the song. The song is about The mountain ( Heaven ) that his brother had to climb.
Such a beautiful song and even though he cried through the song it was a beautiful performance. I also appreciate your reaction and the fact that you showed understanding and compassion for the man’s emotions. Love your reviews. Keep up the great work.
When I watch this ; it feels like my heart is literally being ripped out of my chest! My Daddy LOVED and idolized George Jones like no other artist across all music genres! My sweet Daddy was murdered in 2012. So, when I see Vince breaking, I can't help thinking about my Daddy. R.I.P. George Jones R.I.P. Wallace Maynard
That solo was 100% therapeutic for Vince and the moment he needed to clear his mind and be able to finish the song. And we can't overlook the fact that Patty was his rock that kept the song and Vince himself moving forward
I believe Vince and Patti are cousins. She sings background and with him on a few songs. However she is the most amazing singer on her own. I highly recommend a live version of You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive.
My whole family sat down to watch George's funeral. There were 24 of us sitting and standing around the room. There wasn't a dry eye in the house when Vince started breaking down.
At the very beginning, he's referring to one of George Jones' most famous songs, Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes, written about the country greats of old who had already passed by George's late middle age.
This song has become one of the most played and song songs in modern American funerals - next to Amazing Grace. George's wife asked "Sweet Pea" to sing it for George.
Since i lost my sister, there are times at karaoke when I'll dedicate a song to her "this one's for my big sis"...and i can absolutely relate to Vince trying to sing through the tears. It hurts.
If you want to hear some beautiful examples of blood harmony check out the Louvin Brothers episode of the podcast Cocaine and Rhinestones. Highly recommended.
He wrote the song for his brother who died a few years ago...Patty Loveless stepped in and had his back the entie he couldn't sing so he mad his guitar sing....one of my favorite songs by Pattty Loveless is How Cn I Help You Say Good Bye
Give some major props to Patty.. she had his back when he was losing it... She knows how hard it was for him. Thinking about his brother and the man who had just died and called him SWEETPEA... Vince started writing it when his brother passed away and finished it when Keith Whitley died. Such an amazing performance that makes me tear up every time.
Chris Stapleton invited Patty to sing with him. They did her song -- You Don't Even Know Who I Am. Ole Possum loved Vince, called him Sweet Pea and the love was reciprocated. Patty also sung Blame it On Your Heart which was a great karaoke song!
Keith Whitley (who Vince started this song for) died prematurely of alcohol poisoning. His hit “I’m no Stranger to the Rain” is so good. His voice was absolutely beautiful. You’ll notice Vince referenced that song in the lyrics when he says “you were no stranger to the rain”- please listen to it. His voice was so pure.
Both of them have amazing voices! You should check out more Patty loveless songs. " Blame it on your heart" or "How can I help you to say goodbye" are both great songs. A fun one from Vince Gill is "one more last chance"
Excellent reaction. You are the best. Please check out Patty Loveless singing "You Will Never Leave Harlan Alive." It is a stunning song and shows her talent to the highest degree.
As others have stated, it was originally about, Keith Whitley, who was a country singer before passing from alcohol poisoning. He was amazing! After the first verse that references a few of Whitley's songs, it was left incomplete until the death of Gill's brother, and was dedicated to him instead. I'm sure that while performing this at his friend's funeral, all of that emotion hit him. I really believe he was mourning all three at once.
Vince started to write the song after singer Keith Whitley died. He finished it after his brother died. He's added another verse. He says he's not going to record it again. For Loretta Lynn's tribute after she died.
Vince was supposed to do a guitar solo, but in order to regain control, the band and the organizers of George's funeral, let him play as long as he needed. Kudos to Patty for helping her friend and also for Garth Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood to be the first to stand up to give him the support he needed. Vince wrote that song for his brother, and to his best friend Keith Whitley. Since George was such an icon and a mentor to Vince, he was also singing it for George's wife Nancy (sitting in the front row with short black hair). BTW, when Vince talks about George and 'they don't make those shoes anymore', he's talking about the song that George recorded awhile back 'Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes'. All of the other country music artist who stood up to show their support and love while he was trying to get through that song with an incredible moment Another performance at the funeral by Alan Jackson. He sang the George Jones classic He stopped loving her today. It was beautiful.
Vince Gill wrote this song when his friend and fellow musician Keith Whitley died. This performance was at George Jones funeral. The references at the beginning were to George Jones song, Who's gonna fill their shoes and to Keith Whitleys song, I'm no stranger to the rain. Vince Gill was so emotional because George Jones was a friend and mentor.

Can you imagine writing a song that has such a deep meaning to you?...
And then have to play it every time one of your friends passes away.
