Thanks for the video. Totally saved me... NOTE: As someone else pointed out, to do this specific repair, you don't need to do all this disassembly. He did it in the video because he was trying to find the problem, but you only need to remove the rubber grib, the tape underneath that, and the outside cup thing that the tape holds on. Then you can pop out the focus barrel and get to the screws (of course, I realized this after I did all the unecessary disassembly)
Gristle42 Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm halfway there and so happy. Just need to get some super glue and then reassemble. This is my second Nikkor 18-55 and both have had the same problem (this one was bought as a replacement). When they work, they take such sharp, lovely photos. When they break they are such a pain!
"Gristle42 Hi there, you say "pop out the focus barrel" to do this, butit seems like it is "screwed in" somewhere as it isnt just coming out. dont suppose you could clarify or show a video?? would really help. Cheers" scratch that I figured it out, slide two bits of metal between the runners and twist clockwise (if looking at the front of the lens) . My other question is, I see the screws, and the black bit that fell out. so do I just glue it in situ or do I take the screws out then glue it :-/ cheers
Peter Smith take the screws out an glue them like I show on 2:30 don't super glue them on camera's body because it might glue to the camera's body itself, they need to slide in their grooves...
Peter Smith I have another comment down below that talks about how to remove the barrel. I cant remember this well enough to answer when to glue it, but I remember having the piece out that I was gluing
Also, to those of you wondering how to remove the focus barrel because in the video it looks like it slides right out, but in reality it gets "stuck" - The key here is to lift the two tabs you see on both sides of the barrel. Once you rotate the barrel past those tabs/clips (rotating clockwise I think... look at the russian video in this vid's description) then it threads right off. Then you can see the heads of the screw(s) you need to fix.
Thanks Rui for your video since it attracted solutions. As stated in other comments (search for "tape"), there is indeed a simple way *without removing a single screw* ! Detailed operation: * I recommend to have clean hands, an uncluttered table and e.g. a smartphone to capture photos and/or video of all operations for safe reassembly. * (1) Remove rubber grip. * (2) See uncovered adhesive tape, remove it, keeping it flat and clean for reassembly. * (3) Remove the freed "cup". * (4) See two flat prongs, pry them about 1mm to let the front moving barrel be manually unscrewed. * (5) Continue to unscrew the front barrel until it gets free, but *beware:* carefully notice the angle (for example angle of text on front company name ring) at which barrel gets freed (and thus should be reassembled), else after reassembly autofocus might get confused/off/broken/who-knows. Enough of disassembly. Now fix the problem. * Inside see 3 screws, one is missing its circular shim. Shake lens gently to let the missing one out. My shim was squashed, I had to fit in on a small screwdriver tip to get it round again. * By turning zoom ring, find position where screw is most easily accessible. Put the shim back on it. * Operate zoom ring several times until convinced that shim is fixed for good. * Check visible individual lenses inside (for dust, grease, etc), clean them properly if needed. Then reassemble, reversing steps 5 4 3 2 1 to put everything back in place precisely and carefully. For help, see the photos and videos you took while disassembling. This worked for me and saved me time and money still you are responsible of what you do!
Just bought this same lens used online. It has the EXACTLY same problem. Someone didn't check it before it shipped. Fortunately, I have a 180 day warranty. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for posting this, Rui. I have been googling for hours and did not find any solutions. You really did everyone a service. Can't wait to see how my lens works when I get it put back together!
Staci H :( Finished. The barrel is now stable but every shot is just a blurry mess. This lens is shot. And this was is a replacement for the exact same model that had the exact same problem. A shame because when they are new, they shoot sharp easily.
I knew I was screwed.. whatever had began 5 days ago had now "completely derailed" I got a bit scared and carefully started turning both the zoom and the focus rings then switching back to autofocus to allow the lens to "get back on it's inner rails" (watching the video now made it clear) and somehow it got back to normal.. but I knew this will happen again if I don't get it fixed.. my focus ring is lose exactly as yours.. I'm gonna try this tomorrow... thanks so much for making this guide!
thanks just fixed my 18-55 vr! the hardest parts were reconecting cables and some of the screws didnt want to come out( the ones with plastic). also you need really tiny head for the screwdriver. also try to take pictures of each step to remember all the deatials where everything goes and how it looks before cables are disconnected or parts removed. i am refering also to the video in description!
Hi there ... I having same problem with 18-55 VR lens, Could you please let me if i repair my lens myself its need to adjustment with any software. I read the PDF file and shows need to be adjustment.
i didnt need any adjustment, actually the lens became sharper! it wasnt as sharp as it needed to be probably because the barrel was loose. one thing - because i wasnt precise enough in the way i glued that little plastic piece on, it zooms with more resistance from 18-28 than it used to be, but everything works. also i recommend you do this with a friend what can assist a little bit. Would be best if you or you both had some experience with electronics or that kind of precise of stuff.
Thanks so much for the video. I used a slightly different method on my VR lens. I unscrewed the front lens, took out the broken ring/sleeve, and replaced with a short piece of the BIC inner ink tube . I "expanded " the ring by putting one jaw of a needle nosed pliers inside the ring and squeezing carefully, repeating all round the circumference. I did this till it would just fit on the screw thread. I then added a SMALL drop of super glue and worked the zoom while the glue set. It is still working a few days later! Thanks again for this video.
Glad to see it worked! On one of the messages on this video I mention the use of a ink tube from a bic pen! Really glad to see someone fix this lens with it! Cheers!
Hi there! On the page 12 of the PDF you have the answer to dismount the barrel, there are 2 or 3 key of the segment gear tube (the cylinder focus barrel) that you have to release! I advise against super gluing the broken ring, it will brake again and you will have to repeat the process, try using a BIC Cristal (make a web search) pen inner part... (dimensions are alike) cut it to the desired length and substitute the broken ring with that, (super glue that one so it doesn't come out!) Cheers!
This began to happen to me some days ago, with exactly the same lens as yours. Today I was at a photoshoot as school and I noticed my lens got stiff again when I was gonna zoom in from 18 to 55mm, I switched the focus to manual to turn the focus and release the stiffness, but this time it was more difficult to release and get it back to normal, moments later my lens wasn't focusing right at all, at no point of manual focus would it focus at the model who was 3 meters away from me.. (continues)
Great video, thanks! Describes exactly the same problem as I have with my Nikon lens. However, I have not been able to actually disassemble the front, focus barrel. Just the back mount part. Neither could find the videos/tutorials on the web you mentioned.. could you provide some more pointers? Thanks
Hi Rui Thanks you for posting this video, which I viewed with interest as I have a Tamron 18-200 lens Pentax fit, which has started to get loose with backlash on the zoom ring. I am concerned that there a screws that have worked loose, and might get lost in the mechanism. Do you have any advice regarding repair of this lens?
You can try to talk to a Nikon distributor. If you can't get it anywhere, you can do as fallow: 1- take a BIC like pen, with it's inner plastic tube (ink deposit) warm (not burn! ;D) it up uniformly with a lighter (far from the flame) and insert it on the metal screw when it fits tight, cut it to the proper length (as the others) and test it in the rail (it must feel the same kind of resistance as the others!) then super glue the inside as I show in the video, and you're good to go!
Thank you so much. Your video helped me to fix my Nikkor 18-55 VR! And for the other ones who want to repair their lens: Use quality and proper screw drivers!! (size PH000 for bayonet and PH00 for all other) And I think that bayonet disassembly isn't necessary. I think rear part (rubber ring, zoom front ring and filter ring with front lens) disassembly should be sufficient.
Hi Rui, I have the exact same play in a lens i just acquired- can i ask if you need to dismantle completly to get to the problem or is it fixable from the front (barrel) end instead? also do you have to unsolder stuff -only the service manual i have found lists de-soldering as part of the dismantling process?. never touch a lens like this before and was hoping for a video with the bits you speeded up in yours!
can you send me a pisture or tell which screws to unscrew to unmount the zoom lens? I can't find all of them. Also I cant the find the plastic ring. How can I search them to buy it online? Thanks
Dude! I have the exactly same problem, It happen last week. I am trying to find a video that shows how to disassemble this Lens (Nikon 18-55mm AF-S) with no luck. Perhaps you have found some? Or post it for this community?! It will be appreciate it all around the world!! and maybe even the entire universe! Thanks bro!
The plastic ring you pointed out in the lens barrel on one of the screws on my lens cracked into multiple pieces....is there an online parts store I can get a replacement?
Hey!!!! I managed to repair it!!! you only need to remove the rubber grib, the tape underneath that, and the outside cup thing that the tape holds on. Then you can pop out the focus barrel and get to the screws. I didnt find the broken ring that was missing so I made my own from shrink tube. Also the screw didnt seem to get loose so I superglued the ring directly to the screw on lens. Added a bit of vaseline, cleaned the glass and voila! no wobble! Thanks to Rui Pedro Silva
I wish that I had read this comment earlier, David Zvonar. I undid the screws at the bayonet end, and managed to break one of the flat cables while doing some unnecessary dismantling.
Hi, thank you for your video. I bought used DSLR with this lens (VR). The lens had the wiggle on the barrel. Is it true that "you only need to remove the rubber grib, the tape underneath that, and the outside cup thing that the tape holds on. Then you can pop out the focus barrel and get to the screws" ? My lens seems to focus fine also the moving up/down is ok. But when I rotate the camera it falls from one position to another. Thank you and Ill give you an info if I repaired succesfully
No problem about the "spam"! We have to talk in order get things straight! I created the video exactly for this perpouse! To help people fix this lens!
Hi Rui, Thanks for a helpful video and links. One question, as I re-assembled my lens it wasn't clear to me that you had to get into the bayonet, flat cables, etc. to fix this specific problem. I didn't try to take the lens apart again to verify, but it seems like you could begin by removing the rubber ring (#62), polyester tape (#77), and zoom front ring (#54) first. Then remove the filter ring (#38), which would expose the helicoid ring (#25) and the pesky screws. Note: part numbers refer to those used in the repair manual PDF that you linked. Thanks again!
How did you disassemble (released) the cylinder where the focus barrel goes mounted on? I checked the Russian video and the PDF manual, but none of them cover that one part.. I opened my lens and I'm trying to figure that out.. and yea, it turns out I have: 1 lose ring.. 1 ring broken in 2 pieces (ill try to superglue it back into a single piece) and 1 ring that is still mounted on the screw, but has 1 fracture which means it will soon snap too. But I need to know how to remove the cylinder
I too have the same problem with my 18-55mm... My lens is around a year and a half old and since the warranty of most lenses is 2 years, I was wondering whether the service center people would fix it...
Mine (if you didn't notice in the end of the movie) is also a VR lens. The link you sent is probably broken because I can't open it... please send me message with the proper link, so I can see if I can be of any help!
If like you've just said, you just acquired it, change it in your retailer. If you can't then you'll have to fix it by yourself or send it to a Nikon dealer. I didn't need to dismantle it completely, but I almost needed too because that plastic ring i mention in the video was in the inner part of the lens's body but it got loose and I got it. I didn't need to unsolder anything only unscrew stuff. I fast forward the video because it was to long...
Hi Rui, thanks for your video. I am happy to find someone kind to share its knowledge. I had the same problem, but not that serious: only 1 out of the 3 screws lost the ring/wafer. So my lens tilted on one side, but remain fixed to the holder, not as yours which could be removed easily. I couldnt find yet the missing ring: I hear some noise when shaking the lens but the ring doesnt show.... Then, you dont show in your video how you unscrew the metallic screws. In my lens they are very tight and I am afraid of erasing the tiny head because I havent the appropieate screwdriver My question is: are they hard to remove? could i replace the missing / tore ring with another piece? I would like your comments or answer. best regards and thank you in advance
I there, Try fallowing the PDF along with the video, the screws are easy to remove. But use a proper screw driver! The plastic ring must come out of the lens system or it will clog some gear and ruin even more the lens. If it is broken try using another thing of similar dimension, like the ink charge of a Bic's pen, that you can cut to the proper measure, that would do the work! But don't forget to glue them or they will come lose again and you'll have to repeat the hole process further in time!
Rui Silva Hi Rui, thanks for your reply. The screws were really tight, and i managed to unscrew 2 of 3; the head of the 3rd one got completely erased. Fortunaltely, with a littel patience, you can tilt or swing the ring and it gets out of the lens, so now I can work better. WHen you mention the ink charge of the BIc pen, I don´t know in your country what size is; in mine´s, the ink charge is made of polyethylene and is smaller, you have to push very hard to insert it. On the other hand, polyethylene cant be glued with anaerobic adhesives, in fact, polyethylene doesnt glue to anything! So, now I am looking for a suitable pipe/tubing of the proper size and material to be glued. Any hint or tip? thank you again
Oi Miguel!
Well, I sure hope this isn't a recurring problem regarding this lens in particular, because this is the only one I've got. (they're so god damn expensive). I don't think there's anything wrong with my lens but the focus module does wiggle a bit... Anyway, good video. I'm also PT :P
I'm talking about a 18 - 200 VR l Nikon lens I've got a serious issue that I cannot seem to nail down and I hope you can help me, because I do not want to spend 1000.00 on 100 10.00 dollar parts trying to figure out what is wrong with my AF, auto focus. Here is the deal. i can manually focus just fine with not issue. I took the lens apart about ten times and the first time i took it apart the motor was STUCK, meaning it did not move at all, after a while of me working the gear back and forth the motor loosened up; however, I have no way of finding out if the motor is working because I've got to assemble the dam lens to see if it works. Here is what started it all. When I first connect my lens i hear 3 to 4 little very light knocks, and the zoom works, because it is manual of course, but the AF does not work, it will work manually but it will not work with the focus motor. What do you think my issues is? Is there a way if I can narrow down something like this and say, yep that's what I need so I can buy that one part and fix the dam thing. Even though i can move the gear on the motor now that doesn't necessarily mean that it works, is that correct? What should I do to narrow down an issue like this? Zoom works, manual focus works, but auto focus does not work, everything moves as expected, meaning nothing is sticking and all the parts are smooth as glass. What should i do and where should i start?
Well... I believe the problem is with the motor itself. I would try to find out the power of it (engraved on it) and after disassemble, I would try it out with a power supply. But I think your SWM died. I found a few SWM's on ebay for 37€ / 40$. Check it, and see if it is compatible with yours (not a VR I though) (ebay.com/itm/Original-Lens-Focus-Zoom-Motor-ASSEMBLY-Replacing-for-Nikon-18-200mm-Repair-Part-/301344173621?pt=Digital_Camera_Accessories&hash=item4629832e35) Found a review of that lens where a guy had the same problem and the lens repair was almost as much as a new one... (but it was an oollllddd post!) If you cant figure out the power for the motor use, in last resort, the battery of your machine... Hope you can fix it!
Thank you so much for taking time to answer my question. It has the flat power cord, how would I hook the motor up to something like that. A regular wire would be easy but my motor has flat wire.
Rui Silva It has the flat cable. I got a new lens in the mail of the same type of lens I'm working on and it was the motor. I've got another issue now, I've got a autofocus issue on one of my lens, same type, 18-200mm VR l and I've taken the bay mount off, mother and the the actual autofocus part where it has the gear on it and fit inside a housing. I cannot get that house back down onto the zoom barrel to save my life. I've screwed up the fingers that run across the mechanical portion of the interior portion of the barrel. In other words the auto focus part that makes a connecting to the lens has 4 little wire fingers on it and for the life of me i cannot line that back up. Do you know what I'm talking about?
Thanks man, thought i had mishandled my camera which i felt like an idiot for doing but from reading all these comments it would seem that the blame lies with Nikon's shoddy manufacturing
be VERY careful with superglue, make sure it is completely dry (gassed out) before reinstalling, otherwise you will end up with a haze inside your lens on the elements
I recently bought a used Sony 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 lens. At 75mm the focus ring is loose during MF. but at 300mm the focus ring becomes very tight and focusing becomes difficult. is there any thing that i can do to repair it my self?
I've been following the instructions to a T, but for some reason the #38 filter ring won't come off when I rotate it clockwise. Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong? Mine is an 18-55mm VR. Thanks
Hi there ... Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I having same problem with 18-55 VR lens, Could you please let me if i repair my lens myself its need to adjustment with any software. I read the PDF file and shows need to be adjustment
I didn't do any adjustment with software, what you can do is to take a few shots with the lens of bar codes like a matrix, and then compared it with the images that exists on some review sites (eg. dpreview(dot)com) or use the images within the PDF file. Ok so that is the basic step after you corrected and assembled the lens, but IF, and only IF, you want to know if the job was performed accurately. One requires software for two reasons: 1- If we replaced the PCB, SWM motor or MR encoder units (see PDF, Assembly section page 19 (A19)). 2- And correcting aberration compensation due to misalignment of the lenses (you do had this before because of the loose zoom barrel!) you would detect it if you had major issues in the Auto-Focusing department. It would be recommended as the PDF states at page A39 "Be sure to make an inspection and adjustment, when dissembling and reparing the lens-barrel". But..... MAN, this a DIY solution, not a PROFESSIONAL solution, I don't have the software nor cables nor Communication Boxes to make that kind of correction, this is a KIT lens not a top end of the line lens, and as such these are inexpensive, if you go to a Nikkon dealer they will almost certainly tell you "Buy a new one!" because..... it's a 100$ lens!!! Hope this clarifies your question.
Rui Silva I did it :) Everything look good expect manual focus. I find out bit difficult to focus manually after i fixed the lens. A big thank you Sir !!
You could use a Tamron lens for example 18-270mm or so. They are better than those cheapo lenses. You also got a crop sensor camera, that why 14 mm wouldnt bring too much. or a Tokina 12-24mm. These are lenses made for DX sensor. Best buy DX lenses because they are much cheaper.
I don't know if mine is same as yours. But my 18-55mm won't autofocus but it's on af mode.. sometimes you should force the barrel and then it will focus. Does that happen to you ?
Hi there, no that situation didn't happen to me, it can be numerous things, from falty motor, flat cable, or some hinges that may be broken... either way! if you are able to open it, then check it out!
I don't have time right now to make another video and disassemble my functioning lens again, what I'll do is post the PDF's and other docs that I have used to fix it! Hope it'll help you.
I managed to superglue the plastic rings... I reassembled everything... but Now my minimal focusing distance is something like 3 centimeters.. and the maximum focusing distance is something like 40 cms...
I tried fixing my lens and after reassembling the lens i found it wouldnt focus (kept going in and out of focus quickly as i half pressed the shutter release) and take the picture on auto focus or manual focus could you perhaps tell me why this is? thankyou
Thanks for the reply. I have the model with VR. I found this manual which matches mine, but I cannot seem to get the filter ring back onto the segment gear tube as described on page 21... lens-club.ru/public/files/pdfs/62b36c4e422eb327a4b716cc961ab6c0.pdf
Yeah... I know It's a junk lens but you have to start somewhere and this a very good beginning point for landscapes, night photography, panoramas, etc (Now I am wondering what I would do with a Nikon 14-24mm AFS f/2.8 G ED!!! NOW THAT IS A PIECE OF LENS!!) I have two lenses, this one and a 55-200mm VR lens. I've seen people disassembling 2000$ lenses with stupid problems, so this is an ordinary situation with high end lenses. (But yeah... this happens more often with these shity lenses!)
I don't have a movie about cleaning lenses, maybe Friday I'll shoot one. But for removing dust u can use a dust blower, and a gentile brush for the resistant ones (not compressed air!) then use "lens cleaning paper" (google them) with propanol/ethanol or cetone depending on the type of specs you have on the lens. For grease (apolar solvent) use cetone, for fingerprints and other specs use propanol on ethanol (reagent grade).
And now I just had a miracle.. I got a little pissed and forced the barrel at a point it was getting stuck, something sounded like a snap.. and after that snap it now focuses perfectly... hahahah that was awesome... :D FIXED! :D thanks for the video.. sorry for the spam.. :D
I'm not fixing it fast forward, I'm reassembling it fast forward, and that's different. There's a video in the description that you can see how to disassemble it, along with a PDF. :)
I hope so, I dropped my 4month old lens one the tiled roof of the holiday villa in The Canaries and even though it was in a Nikon bag it landed sideways at now the barrel is loose. It still focuses but it "jumps"as it is focussing. I'm advised by top camera shop in Dublin, Bermingham's, that a repair by Nikon is about €120 & a new lens is €140, even an estimate by Nikon is €40 apparently. Used ones on EBay for 60-70 but I'd bite the bullet & buy new. However I will try and repair it myself first, so, thank you...
Hi I've got the same Problem but the Ring came of a second time after i Glued it Together so I need a new one. Does anybody knows where to get one of these ?
First I'm sorry if the video can't help you. Second if I would have done the full video it would have become insanely big, and then some guys would ask for a short version, and frankly I think the short version is good enough for it's purpose, why should I repeat things that exist in other videos? (see link on the "about") follow the PDF and the link video and you'l do fine disassembling the lens, as for the repair use my video...< If my lens gets the same problem I will do the full version...
+Bernard C They usually say it's the costumer fault. I've learned that to store this lens without having future issues one has to put the zoom in the middle point where the zoom comes out and goes back in again (I think its near 22 or 25mm) and turn the auto-focus button off, in order not to damage the lens...
Boa noite Marcio, após ler o PDF que referencio no comentário associado ao video, não existe referencia a esse anel de plástico, o que me leva a crer que não existirá como peça de substituição.
Looks like you also opened the bayonet end. I think you reassembled with the aperture lever out of place. Reading some of the comments, we did not need to open this end. I do not recommend opening this end. I think that this video needs to be changed.
Would be nice and useful video if it had all steps needed to disassemble and reassemble the lens as well step by step. I mean you bothered and were able to do it so why not just post full guide to fix this particular problem instead of giving links to full guides when they have steps not needed to fix this particular problem.
Thanks for the video! Helped me a lot! However, I couldn't reconnect my autofocus switch. I forgot where it was connected to. Can anyone show how? Send me a picture or a video please! Thank you!
that's just ridiculous! I had a Canon for 3 years, and it never presented any issue... now this nikon lenses is broken on the first day I use my camera! I can't believe it! I'm never going to buy stuff from nikon again, neither should you...
Nah man. I understand your feeling but Nikkon's glass are very good, this kit lens has OK glass for the price (100$). The body is crap, and that is true. I have a friend of mine who had a Canon EF 100-400mm and also broke, so, this kind of things happen. If your lens is broken on the first day return it to the store. Don't interpret my words wrongly, although Nikkor lens are good they are way to expensive (even if lower that cannon's lenses) but I will not buy them because they are WAY overpriced, Sigma for zoom lens, or Samyang/Bower for prime lens is my choice for the time being. Cheers!
I there, and thanks for the comment, I've never disassembled that particular lens, but I don't thinks there's any problem doing it. Try searching the web for schematics, I've found this video (maybe you found it too!) /watch?v=1RlJHEXFzEw Hope it can help you with your repair! Best of luck! ;)
No need to thee the lens apart. Remove rubber sleeve, strip off the sellotape (yes really!). Remove the front bezel. unscrew the barrel... using fingers on the three pry points. Then you will find the cheap plastic shims rattling around inside! Just replace them........ of course if none are missing. It's a piece of shit as camera lenses go. No need to tear the lens apart. I plan to buy a SIGMA instead.
True, but when I did this, there was no instruction on the web regarding how to do this procedure. You can do this without opening up the camera like I did. However it turned out to be a good thing as the inner lenses were not as clean as they should be.
Cheers"
scratch that I figured it out, slide two bits of metal between the runners and twist clockwise (if looking at the front of the lens) .
+Gristle42 Thank you so much that did it ! :-)
Thanks Rui for your video since it attracted solutions. As stated in other comments (search for "tape"), there is indeed a simple way *without removing a single screw* !
Detailed operation:
* I recommend to have clean hands, an uncluttered table and e.g. a smartphone to capture photos and/or video of all operations for safe reassembly.
* (1) Remove rubber grip.
These lenses are too delicate.
Thank you
Thanks so much for the video.
Cheers!
Rui Silva Cheers Rui: you will have helped an unknown number of others save their lenses also.
Just realized what the snap was.. I was forgetting to snap the barrel into the holders.. but anyway, I managed to fix it thanks to you! thanks a lot!!
(dimensions are alike) cut it to the desired length and substitute the broken ring with that, (super glue that one so it doesn't come out!)
Cheers!
thanks for the video. i thought the lens was ruined but now i can fix it
This began to happen to me some days ago, with exactly the same lens as yours.
Thanks
Hi Rui
Thanks you for posting this video, which I viewed with interest as I have a Tamron 18-200 lens Pentax fit, which has started to get loose with backlash on the zoom ring.
Rui, thanks...I appear to have the same problem...can you provide the info about access from the front barrel as well? thanks.
Rui - great video, can I get a link to how to get access to this front barrel as well?
Thanks,
Rick
Thank you so much. Your video helped me to fix my Nikkor 18-55 VR!
And for the other ones who want to repair their lens: Use quality and proper screw drivers!! (size PH000 for bayonet and PH00 for all other)
And I think that bayonet disassembly isn't necessary. I think rear part (rubber ring, zoom front ring and filter ring with front lens) disassembly should be sufficient.
Thanks for the comment! :)
Thanks bro!
Your the only with this video and it looks way to complicated for me to do on my own. how much would this cost at camera shop you think?
Nicely done! cheers mate!
+Rui Pedro Silva Only yours video was giving me hope that it might be something this easy :)
+David Zvonař "I didnt find the broken ring that was missing so I made my own from shrink tube." => Genius ! Thanks a lot, that did the trick !
great to hear!
Rui,
Why not deposit a copy of your PDF at allphotolensesdotcom as the original hyperlink appears broken?
In my lens they are very tight and I am afraid of erasing the tiny head because I havent the appropieate screwdriver
My question is: are they hard to remove? could i replace the missing / tore ring with another piece?
I'm talking about a 18 - 200 VR l Nikon lens
I've got a serious issue that I cannot seem to nail down and I hope you can help me, because I do not want to spend 1000.00 on 100 10.00 dollar parts trying to figure out what is wrong with my AF, auto focus.
Check it, and see if it is compatible with yours (not a VR I though) (ebay.com/itm/Original-Lens-Focus-Zoom-Motor-ASSEMBLY-Replacing-for-Nikon-18-200mm-Repair-Part-/301344173621?pt=Digital_Camera_Accessories&hash=item4629832e35)
Found a review of that lens where a guy had the same problem and the lens repair was almost as much as a new one... (but it was an oollllddd post!)
If you cant figure out the power for the motor use, in last resort, the battery of your machine...
Hope you can fix it!
Thank you so much for taking time to answer my question. It has the flat power cord, how would I hook the motor up to something like that. A regular wire would be easy but my motor has flat wire.
Erik Little Yes, but doesn't it have a welded terminal where you can make contact? or even the contacts of the flat cable?
Erik Little I'm sorry man, but I haven't the slightest idea of what your talking about...
You already saved my life !! thank you !!!
Hello I have a huge problem with my Nikon DX VR 18-55 MM it;s tilted and jam too.. How do i go about fixing it
I have the same problem with my lens. I will attempt the repair soon. Thanks for posting this.
taikoking1 you didnt😎
Thanks man, thought i had mishandled my camera which i felt like an idiot for doing but from reading all these comments it would seem that the blame lies with Nikon's shoddy manufacturing
Hi there! thanks for the comment, the docs you'll need are in the video info as of now!
be VERY careful with superglue, make sure it is completely dry (gassed out) before reinstalling, otherwise you will end up with a haze inside your lens on the elements
I recently bought a used Sony 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 lens. At 75mm the focus ring is loose during MF. but at 300mm the focus ring becomes very tight and focusing becomes difficult. is there any thing that i can do to repair it my self?
You should show the whole process! I don't know how took of the first parts..
have you seen the video discription? there are very useful links there for those parts of the dessasemble.
One requires software for two reasons:
1- If we replaced the PCB, SWM motor or MR encoder units (see PDF, Assembly section page 19 (A19)).
Thank you It will help me a lot
Rui Silva I did it :)
Everything look good expect manual focus.
Thanks for saving my Nikon, bro
Nice!! Glad it helped!
How am i suppose to learn if you're fixing it on fast forward?
how do u connect the plugs together?
I tried fixing my lens and after reassembling the lens i found it wouldnt focus (kept going in and out of focus quickly as i half pressed the shutter release) and take the picture on auto focus or manual focus could you perhaps tell me why this is? thankyou
Did you paid attention to the part 3:42? did you do this part correctly?
Thanks for the reply. I have the model with VR. I found this manual which matches mine, but I cannot seem to get the filter ring back onto the segment gear tube as described on page 21...
lens-club.ru/public/files/pdfs/62b36c4e422eb327a4b716cc961ab6c0.pdf
Please make a full video
Espetaculo o video!!Mesmo o que precisava e ainda por cima de Espinho. Melhor não podia calhar :D
Yeah... I know It's a junk lens but you have to start somewhere and this a very good beginning point for landscapes, night photography, panoramas, etc (Now I am wondering what I would do with a Nikon 14-24mm AFS f/2.8 G ED!!! NOW THAT IS A PIECE OF LENS!!)
I have two lenses, this one and a 55-200mm VR lens. I've seen people disassembling 2000$ lenses with stupid problems, so this is an ordinary situation with high end lenses.
(But yeah... this happens more often with these shity lenses!)
hiii!! thanks for your video! do you have onether one, that shows how to clean lens, i got sand inside.-
Thanks!!!!!
Please do that! It's a real struggle!! Thanks bro!
Why the hell did you record the music so fucking loud... have to turn down volume and up again for voice...
My bad... I did noticed that, but didn't want to render it all again... Nevertheless I hope the video helped...
Mike, RU always a dick?
Only on Wednesdays, what's your day?
i have same problem for same lens thanks for sharing
company should improve their design
Yep they should improve the quality of their materials...
Where can i buy this plastic ring? Mijn is broken to half.
I believe you can't find it for sale. Try using other thing..
.
Grrrrr oke thanks
Muy buena la ilustración
Hi I've got the same Problem but the Ring came of a second time after i Glued it Together so I need a new one. Does anybody knows where to get one of these ?
Nollos3 have you found a plastic ring? I'm looking for one too.
haven't found one but build one myself. D=4mm , Hole 3mm and 1,5mm thick or so. got 1m of 5mm plasic rod and tried building one and it worked
First I'm sorry if the video can't help you. Second if I would have done the full video it would have become insanely big, and then some guys would ask for a short version, and frankly I think the short version is good enough for it's purpose, why should I repeat things that exist in other videos? (see link on the "about") follow the PDF and the link video and you'l do fine disassembling the lens, as for the repair use my video...<
If my lens gets the same problem I will do the full version...
Seems like a lot of people have the same problem with this lens. The dick-head in the camera shop told me I must have dropped it.
+Bernard C They usually say it's the costumer fault. I've learned that to store this lens without having future issues one has to put the zoom in the middle point where the zoom comes out and goes back in again (I think its near 22 or 25mm) and turn the auto-focus button off, in order not to damage the lens...
Thanks Rick, I've sent you a personal message about what you asked for!
Cheers mate!
Obrigado!
Edson, comprei no site fotopecas.com.br/ . código 316 , Nikon 18-55mm,18-55mm VR bucha alta (D43) - kit 3 peças tá custando R$30
OK tomorrow I'll send you video with it...
ahh help please!! i did this, when i put it all back together the pictures are really dark. anyone know how to fix this?
Looks like you also opened the bayonet end. I think you reassembled with the aperture lever out of place. Reading some of the comments, we did not need to open this end. I do not recommend opening this end. I think that this video needs to be changed.
Would be nice and useful video if it had all steps needed to disassemble and reassemble the lens as well step by step. I mean you bothered and were able to do it so why not just post full guide to fix this particular problem instead of giving links to full guides when they have steps not needed to fix this particular problem.
muito bom !
me ajudou muito
Thanks for the video! Helped me a lot!
However, I couldn't reconnect my autofocus switch. I forgot where it was connected to. Can anyone show how? Send me a picture or a video please! Thank you!
From minute 3:40 to 4:20 it shows on the video a white connector right next to the AF button where you have to plug it in.
that's just ridiculous!
Cheers!
youtube not letting me post links...add h t t p to the beginning of the url
Thanks mate!
:-) done... had same issue... thx ;-)
Great Video! Music fine!
I there, and thanks for the comment,
I've never disassembled that particular lens, but I don't thinks there's any problem doing it. Try searching the web for schematics, I've found this video (maybe you found it too!) /watch?v=1RlJHEXFzEw Hope it can help you with your repair!
Best of luck! ;)
Volume sucks on this video.
Hi there, here is the link! allphotolensesdotcom/public/files/pdfs/62b36c4e422eb327a4b716cc961ab6c0.pdf
Its a cheap junk lens. No wonder you are having problems.
