The Zoom H5 impressed me the moment I first held it. Although spent a lot of time looking a pictures and videos of it online, I still expected it to be larger. The Zoom H5 fits very comfortable in the hand and weighs less that I imagined. All of the controls are easy to reach and manipulate with a single hand. The Zoom H5 does not feel cheap at all. The body of the Zoom H5 is made of a rubberized plastic that will keep the device firmly in your hand. Like its big brother the Zoom H6, the Zoom H5 has interchangeable capsules. It ships with the XYH-5 capsule which has a pair of condenser microphones in a 90° pattern. The microphones are housed in a rubberized shock mount which will reduce noise from handling the device, and the XYH-5 capsule is made from a durable metal housing.
If I could improve the Zoom H5 I would add a noise gate and include a higher capacity memory card (it ships with a 2 GB MICRO SD card). However, these are relatively minor issues and don't downgrade my opinion of the Zoom H5. I give the Zoom H5 an A++ rating!

Hey man, this was a very excellent demo and overview. I just purchased the H5 and had no idea it even had an input jack on the XY mic, that will be super useful as I am planning some podcasting. Nevermind the podcasts, nevermind the nature sounds, these capsule mics can reportedly do up to 140 dB SPL! This device is for live bands and space program launch sites. I just got mine today, hit a few recordings of my band jamming out and it sounds amazing.
Whenever I forget what my H5 can do, I watch this video. It happens more often than you think. I've probably watched this video straight through at least once a year. I usually just use the recorder for youtube voice overs. So it's nice to get a refresher from time to time. Thanks for this video.

I wish people talked about it's phantom power more. I had talked to a Best Buy employee and a Guitar Center employee, and they both said it does NOT have phantom power capabilities. Now, all of these youtubers are saying it does... But it's an after thought. This is something that should be brought to light much more because for me it was one of the big reasons I want one, and it may be that way for others too. In many reviews, including this one, and even on Zoom's own website, the fact that this can provide 48v phantom power is barely ever said. Other than that, great video. Gave me lots of info. I'm going to pick one up tomorrow.

This is by far the best H5 video out there. Only thing else I'm trying to find is how to improve sound quality for the interviewee when doing a podcast interview over the phone using an iRig and the line out jack. Thanks for sharing.

Good review - I just picked up my Zoom H5 (in 2019) and this review is still very applicable. A useful primer for new H5 users.
I've just viewed this entire piece and found it really useful - even though it's six years old. I could have done with a line or two about the 'remote' socket but apart from that best vid I've seen in ages.

Very helpful. Just purchased the H5. I'm not an audio guy and will be using this mainly for archival quality interviews for the Library of Congress, so I need a recorder that gives me versatility, a high quality recording from the capsule mic, and easy interface with my computer or ipad. Tomorrow I take it out for a spin with my first recording, so I'm crossing my fingers.

Still great review blog not dated at all. I applaud thoroughness, and the great closeup camera work that enabled a total novice like me grasp the steps in using the many menus and especially recognizing all the info blocks and how to uyilize. I had no experience of sound recording before (I am a photographer by profession)
Now I am doing recordings to make a CD with professional musicians with music by my ancestor Erik Gustaf Geijer who lived 1783-1849. We have done some songs so far with a female vocal and this
weekend we will do recordings with piano, cello and viola.

Dude nice, concise and to the point. If you could do another with more in depth explanations about limiters and compression use in the field, good meter readings for good sound (signal to noise ratios) and proper mic placement etc.that would be awesome. Thanks for keeping it real.
I think Zoom nailed it here with the H6, and now the H5. I am a beginner DSLR Video hobbyist, and want a great external recorder because the Camera audio, and mics are not so wonderful. Thorough would be an understatement. I agree with the earlier post here. I can watch this video, and pretty much know what to do on the H5. I agree with you on a Noise gate, but that is fixed in post, so I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Only thing I will say the Tascam has over the Zoom for DSLR field work is that the recorder goes under the DSLR vs. over the top of it. If I cage my setup, that probably won't be too much of a concern, but still it is a small nit. Well done on your review, and well done Zoom!

Ha ha, that joystick drives me bananas! An amazing, friendly device nonetheless, and capable of superb live recordings for musical applications, line in stuff, some multitracking options, and a decent interface in a pinch. I didn’t like the plastic body much, at first, but it is very much in keeping with what is used on most DSLRs: not as beautiful as the old metal bodied film cameras, but very tough and probably harder to scratch and scuff up! Nice thorough review, thank you!

Great review, helped me decide which recorder to buy, I went with the H5. Your cons are all on-point, Zoom should take heed!
Edit: I've had the H5 in my hands for a day and I'm very happy with it. I was worried as in the past Zoom products have been kind of cheap and plasticy, especially the guitar effects, but the H5 feels like a premium product. The standard x-y mic is great and I'm really thinking about getting the mid-side mic also. I literally stuck the H5 in front of my acoustic guitar as I sat on the floor cross-legged and the sound was fantastic, so after some experimentation with mic position I expect the sound to be even better. The lack of both count-down and count-up is annoying! One feature which would be lovely would be the ability to turn around the display, as when you are recording yourself it's upside down. But that's a very minor issue. The H5 is packed with features, if anyone is sitting on the fence as to get this or not, go for it you won't regret it.

The best how to on this recorder I have ever seen. Would like to have heard more about all the options for Limiter/Comp: General, studio, concert....also don't believe you covered stereo recording vs single channel. However, great job. Would love to see more in depth coverage of plugging into board, etc. I am a videographer. Thank you.

Great video... helped me to crash course how to use this thing when we got ours for a last minute on location video shoot. One correction to add thought... you properly explained how to customize the low-cut filter, but I do not agree with how you explained the purpose of it. It is more for filtering out the low frequencies of the signal itself (vocal, instrument, etc.) especially when the sounds you are recording are not "bass" oriented sounds. This is handy especially when you plan on combining/mixing the recorded signal WITH a "bass"-type of signal. All sounds naturally have bass in them (just some have way more than others), and when mixing 15-20 tracks of instruments that do not have the lows rolled off, the total accumulated bass sound will be muddy. Rolling off the lows on all the instruments (instead of bass-oriented instruments) will get rid of unwanted bass frequencies from other instruments and free up the bass-type tracks to be more prominent in the mix and still maintain a tight presence. I personally don't believe in recording with a filter... but the apply a filter while mixing to maintain as much control and choice as possible. That is my $0.02...
