Hey man, this was a very excellent demo and overview. I just purchased the H5 and had no idea it even had an input jack on the XY mic, that will be super useful as I am planning some podcasting. Nevermind the podcasts, nevermind the nature sounds, these capsule mics can reportedly do up to 140 dB SPL! This device is for live bands and space program launch sites. I just got mine today, hit a few recordings of my band jamming out and it sounds amazing.
This video is so underrated, deserves more views tbh. Covering all basis, quite comprehensive and easy to follow. Will definitely save this and recommend to any h5 users!

One important aspect that I don’t think you covered, and I can’t find covered anywhere else on the Internet relates to the filing system used by the H5. The owners manual tries to explain it with some pictures and brief description. I find this totally inadequate. The filing system involves making recordings in stereo-file and multi-file, and has subdirectories entitled project, file list, folder, record and maybe more. I have spent a lot of time, trying to make sense of all of this, and haven’t made much headway. In fact, I have made recordings that I can’t even find in the file system. They’re apparently lost, at least to me. Can you in any way help me with this? I realize this review that you did more than 10 years ago, has been up for a long time. I’m hoping you’re still available. Thank you so much, Tom.
Whenever I forget what my H5 can do, I watch this video. It happens more often than you think. I've probably watched this video straight through at least once a year. I usually just use the recorder for youtube voice overs. So it's nice to get a refresher from time to time. Thanks for this video.
I wish people talked about it's phantom power more. I had talked to a Best Buy employee and a Guitar Center employee, and they both said it does NOT have phantom power capabilities. Now, all of these youtubers are saying it does... But it's an after thought. This is something that should be brought to light much more because for me it was one of the big reasons I want one, and it may be that way for others too. In many reviews, including this one, and even on Zoom's own website, the fact that this can provide 48v phantom power is barely ever said. Other than that, great video. Gave me lots of info. I'm going to pick one up tomorrow.

This is by far the best H5 video out there. Only thing else I'm trying to find is how to improve sound quality for the interviewee when doing a podcast interview over the phone using an iRig and the line out jack. Thanks for sharing.

Thank You for a good instruction regarding Zoom H5 I had no experience of sound recording before (I am a photographer by profession) Now I am doing recordings to make a CD with professional musicians with music by my ancestor Erik Gustaf Geijer who lived 1783-1849. Very helpful. Just purchased the H5. I'm not an audio guy and will be using this mainly for archival quality interviews for the Library of Congress, so I need a recorder that gives me versatility, a high quality recording from the capsule mic, and easy interface with my computer or ipad. Tomorrow I take it out for a spin with my first recording, so I'm crossing my fingers.

Would like to have heard more about all the options for Limiter/Comp: General, studio, concert....also don't believe you covered stereo recording vs single channel. However, great job. If I'm just going to record one session, fill up the card to the max, then transfer it to my computer for editing, then erase and do it again another time, should I just use keep using Project 1, Folder 1? Also, how do I know if a mike requires phantom power? And thanks for a great review!
Great video... helped me to crash course how to use this thing when we got ours for a last minute on location video shoot. One correction to add thought... you properly explained how to customize the low-cut filter, but I do not agree with how you explained the purpose of it. It is more for filtering out the low frequencies of the signal itself (vocal, instrument, etc.) especially when the sounds you are recording are not "bass" oriented sounds. This is handy especially when you plan on combining/mixing the recorded signal WITH a "bass"-type of signal. All sounds naturally have bass in them (just some have way more than others), and when mixing 15-20 tracks of instruments that do not have the lows rolled off, the total accumulated bass sound will be muddy. Rolling off the lows on all the instruments (instead of bass-oriented instruments) will get rid of unwanted bass frequencies from other instruments and free up the bass-type tracks to be more prominent in the mix and still maintain a tight presence. I personally don't believe in recording with a filter... but the apply a filter while mixing to maintain as much control and choice as possible. That is my $0.02...
Excellent demo and explanation of features. Others may have pointed it out, but there is a major loss of your video lip sync following the VO portion and prior to the close, which is in sync once again. Easy fix....just shift that potion of the track and upload anew. As long as the H5 is on the market people are going to be watching this.

If you activate all sources as L/R and Ch:1 and Ch:2 do you get all sources recorded on sd card and if yes then how will you differentiate them from one another ?

Hello Darrell, this is Georgios (Thanatos) from the greek metal band PHALANX. Gave you a thumbs up for specially mentioning some stuff which is not documented in the device manual. I got a question though so you might help me. The unfortunetaly not documented feature of blinking LEDs beneath the rec-channel buttons when clipping or the indicators on the display seem more likely to warn you if level input exceeds the manual's suggested value of about -12db. Yesterday when practicing I was sure my level setup in stereo mode for L/R is ok and after recording the 5th track I caught a blinking with my eye, also seeing when finished the record that one display indicator also showed me that one channel clipped. So, I imported all recorded tracks in my audio editing software on my computer to check if the one recorded track exceeded the 0db level value and I noticed all tracks were fine and do not reach even -6db. The second thing is that before recording I was watching the level meter on the display so I can adjust the level, and although my eyes could not see the level meter to come close to 0db the display indicators signed me clipping, which might proove in a way my first point. Could you tell me something about this (independent from the backup feature, it's not the question here)? Best regards Thanatos Lead singer/guitarist
Uncommonly good video. Sincere thanks. I have started using my H5 for recording live performances but the recordings have suffered from audience noise. My next steps will be to try the concert compression setting on the L/R; and to use a feed from the mixer into 1 and/or 2. Would love to see a video demonstrating how to do all this to best effect. Easy fix....just shift that potion of the track and upload anew. As long as the H5 is on the market people are going to be watching this.

If you activate all sources as L/R and Ch:1 and Ch:2 do you get all sources recorded on sd card and if yes then how will you differentiate them from one another ?

this is Georgios (Thanatos) from the greek metal band PHALANX. Gave you a thumbs up for specially mentioning some stuff which is not documented in the device manual.
I got a question though so you might help me. The unfortunetaly not documented feature of blinking LEDs beneath the rec-channel buttons when clipping or the indicators on the display seem more likely to warn you if level input exceeds the manual's suggested value of about -12db. Yesterday when practicing I was sure my level setup in stereo mode for L/R is ok and after recording the 5th track I caught a blinking with my eye, also seeing when finished the record that one display indicator also showed me that one channel clipped. So, I imported all recorded tracks in my audio editing software on my computer to check if the one recorded track exceeded the 0db level value and I noticed all tracks were fine and do not reach even -6db.
The second thing is that before recording I was watching the level meter on the display so I can adjust the level, and although my eyes could not see the level meter to come close to 0db the display indicators signed me clipping, which might proove in a way my first point.
Could you tell me something about this (independent from the backup feature, it's not the question here)?

Uncommonly good video. Sincere thanks. I have started using my H5 for recording live performances but the recordings have suffered from audience noise. My next steps will be to try the concert compression setting on the L/R; and to use a feed from the mixer into 1 and/or 2. Would love to see a video demonstrating how to do all this to best effect. Nice work Darrell. Sounds like the H5 has enough clean gain to push the PR40, I'm still looking for a budget friendly mixer that can claim the same;)
