The type of Oil filter depends on the brand of the Oil filter housing, which can either be MAHLE or MANN. To ensure it is the correct type of filter, it is best to check the filter housing itself (look for stamps or labels on it). Or simply take the filter out and inspect it. The one with one side blocked is likely to be MAHLE (open hole is 22 mm in diameter). Whereas the one with top and bottom opened is likely to be MANN (the holes would be 30mm & 24mm in diameter). Another possible way, is by checking the period at which the car was built: At or Before June2018 = MAHLE, At or After July2018 = MANN. (Recently, I was approached by a friend with a 2018 Mini Cooper Countryman and ask if I can change the oil for him. Therefore forced me to do a lot of homework...)

Thanks very much for the information. I'll pin your comment as it could save someone from a bit of hassle. I guess the motor factors who I gave the registration to, would only know the date of registration and I know from experience build and registration dates on Minis can be distant and overlap. Naturally I have to order parts prior to seeing the car, so I've later found places that tend of offer all filter types for the range on credit or return. I'm curious if the hexagonal and torx fitting is an accurate identifier too.. thanks again.

A lot of motor factors send me two oil filters out nowadays. Loads of engines where you can't easily tell which filter it has without actually taking the old one out..
