Wow, it is twenty five years since The Verve put out “Bittersweet Symphony“ and the reference via that iconic video was strong. I now will have to check the context of the Messiah text - it is quite late on, I think. I have to say the last two times I have seen it, I saw the Mozart adaption for a German text.
