RONANS mother wrote a vlog about her experience. Taylor ran across it and followed it. She used the mothers words in the song and gave her credit for writing it.
The fact that Taylor could write such a beautifully heartbreaking song about people she didn't actually know tells you everything you need to know about her as a person and how talented she is.
Ronans mom was on a talk show when this happened and played the voicemail from Taylor. They met once at a concert backstage and when Ronan passed Taylor called and said that she had an idea for a song for the cancer foundations concert and asked her permission to write the song for Ronan. I cry everytime, this song hits too deep, and Taylor did this for a stranger. She’s just an angel ❤

Taylor came across Ronan's Mom's blog when he was still with her. The blog was her outlet. After he died Taylor wrote the song using some of the words/thoughts from the blog. Taylor felt compelled to write the song because the blog moved her so much. She got in touch with Ronan's mom and told her she came across her blog and wrote the song and could she send it to her. She wrote and recorded it in her house. She told Ronan's mom the song was just for her and she would never play it again or use it on an album. Months later Taylor saw Ronan's parents set up a charity in his name to help other children with cancer. Taylor contacted Ronans mom to see what she thought about her making going into the studio to make a professional cut and make a video using Ronan's pictures. Since Taylor had used things Ronan's mom said in her blog she told her she would give her a song songwriting credit and the proceeds from the song would go directly to Ronan's charity. Ronan's mom thought it was a great idea and sent Taylor some pictures to use in the video. Taylor never told anyone anything about the song. Ronan's parents came out after the video was made and told the story. A few years later Taylor participated in a national televised cancer fundraiser and asked Ronan's family if she could sing it live for that. No one would have ever known about the song had Ronan's parents not started a charity in his name and Taylor just happened to come across it. This is a re-record. The original video is better. It is all in color and makes Ronan more "alive." Not sure how to word that. Taylor never met Ronan. His parents were not fans of Taylor's as people have stated. They knew who she was but that was it. The song came about organically. Of course they have met Taylor now and she invited them to a concert. What a weird beautiful story. Now Ronan's parents will always have a video of him set to some of his Mom's words. So touching.
This is the only Taylor Swift song I physically can't listen to. I don't have any children, but just the idea of losing a child and what those parents must be going through will always break my heart.
I have a 3 year old son and a 16 month old daughter and have only listened to this song 3 times. It makes me ugly cry every single time. I can’t even imagine.
Taylor's mom has been struggling with cancer on and off for many years now. I think that's why Mia (his mom) and Ronan's story was so special to Taylor. Besides acknowledging Mia as a cowriter on the song and giving her the credits and royalties, just the fact that someone took the time to immortalise your child in music so that billions of people will remember his name and his story is pretty special 💕
Pretty sure Taylor has only performed this live twice. Once at a cancer foundation function, and once when Ronan's Mom was at one of her concerts. She barely got through the song and you could tell she was fighting back tears. The song writing credits go to the Mother along with Taylor because the words mostly came from the Mother's blog. All proceeds go to the Ronan Cancer Foundation . Taylor Swift is a special person and those haters who hate can just KM!!!!!!
