Ferazel's Wand -

Great video! Would a PowerBook G4 work better for 3D games?

Idk if you’re still looking into this but I own a G3 Pismo that runs at 500 mhz and 1 GB of RAM, and I’ll say, you would need to have very low expectations for 3D since these G3’s are first gen 3D systems. So yes if you want 3D games I’d get a PowerBook G4, if you want full OS9 compatibility get any titanium model, though if you are fine without that then get the fastest one you can find. You’ll be playing stuff like Halo in no time.
Just don’t get a G3 if you want 3D games

They're rebooting Marathon. Sadly it sounds like a lootbox multi-player shooter.

(4:15) Quake III Arena and all id Tech 3 games do not have software renderer paths, they're all exclusively OpenGL.

Another excellent video, thank you. The machine's design is beautiful; if MacBooks looked like this today, I'd be a happy man.

If MacBooks were as upgradeable as PowerBooks G3, I'd be a happy man too ☹️

Ah yes, I remember its predecessor, Wall St. in 1997 when I worked at Apple.

I absolutely had Virtual Game Station, but the only PS1 game I had to play with it was Gauntlet Legends. Ran great, though!

I had Virtual Game Station too. My PowerBook G3 Wallstreet at 233MHz was not quite fast enough to play all the games well but it was still fun to try.

Great video. I'm putting an SSD and upgrading the ram in my iMac G3 350mhz. I'll be trying some of these games.

My favorite game on the G3 Wallstreet was Battle Girl from Ultra United. It was a really fun arcade-style game with a great techno soundtrack. It really got your adrenaline pumping.

Great video. And great channel! In comparison. How’s this different than the Pismo?
I’m look for a Mac like this. Keeping an eye out on online marketplaces. I really like the style. But mostly. Amazing time then when this came out. So many changes in 3D gaming.

I actually much prefer the sharp, crunchy look of lower res software mode compared to the super clean, yet blurry look of early hardware acceleration. It makes old shooters like Quake and Doom really sparse looking.

Great video - i'd love a video covering the best games for this era of Mac (G3/G4) as often these are forgotten compared to "Classic" Macs

nice one Gruz! i’m curious tho, after you found out virtual memory was turned on did you go back to see if the other games played better or was that just a one off for cro mag rally?

I played and loved all those Ambrosia SW games on my parents’ Lombard - they all ran great. And I saw Dark Forces (looked like Dark Forces II?) at the end of the video - definitely played that one too but mostly on a beige G3 with upgraded graphics card.

    An excellent video.
I envy you for finding a Lombard at such a bargain price at a garage sale. Vintage computers rarely turn up at garage sales or thrift stores in Australia; at least in my area. It's also pretty cool that you have an official but aftermarket slot-loading optical drive; I made my own using an iMac G5 optical drive.
My Lombard died late last year (2022), but it's still my favourite of all the computers I've owned. I upgraded mine with a 400 MHz CPU daughtercard (replacing the original 333 MHz card), 512 MB of RAM, a 128 GB Compact Flash card for a hard-drive, new thermal paste, a USB 2.0 card and the aforementioned slot-loading optical drive.
Some of these upgrades now live in my Pismo PowerBook G3, which has a 500 MHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM and a 120 GB mSATA SSD.

Hey I have one question- what happened to your Lombard? What problem does it have? I am a former Powerbook Wallstreet PDQ owner and I did fix it after buying it broken

I paid full price for my $3,500 Lombard. Seeing a DVD playback on an active-matrix LED screen was worth the price. Diablo II was my gaming mainstay.
