When I was watching the new Sonic movie I had to ask myself, "MatPat, why is Sonic on a road trip?" We all know that Sonic's big thing is running. He can move way faster than a car, which makes the choice of making his big theatrical release a road trip movie SUPER weird. Theorist, today I am peeling back the layers of this "plot hole" to figure out if it was a MISTAKE or, perhaps, proof that it really is about the friends you make along the way.

I feel like Sonic just stayed with Donutlord because at heart, he’s a kid. He doesn’t want to be alone. And really, he doesn’t want to leave Earth. So he’s purposefully dragging his feet on leaving and spending as much time as possible trying to stay here. And he stays in the car with him because this is person he feels closest with, even at the beginning of the movie, this is his dad in his mind.
This is how I took it...only way for it to make sense

I appreciate how MatPat calculated Sonic’s run to the Pacific Ocean and back, but it looks like there are some mountains there too, so I think he would have to calculate the height of the mountains that Sonic would have run up and back down again as well

What if Sonic knows he could get to San Francisco really fast but chose not to because he didnt want to be lonely anymore, hence traveling with Tom.

This is what I believe to be true, though Matpat's theory isn't incorrect in my opinion. I think it comes down to the fact that in this movie, Sonic is much more of a kid and as such might have simply not been confident enough to explore such a distant place on his own.
Montana is his home, and he hasn't really left it from what we're shown. So going to some unknown place far away would not only be scary, but he would also have to find a way back home (if we're assuming he's using his rings only in emergencies and doesn't use the rings to get back to Montana).
While he probably knows that he's faster than Tom's truck, he sees this as an opportunity to fill the empty place in his heart. He's basically getting the father he never had AND that father is making sure that he gets to San Fran and back safely.

Sonic 'could' have found his rings on his own but:
1. Everyone tends to think and do irrational things when they are scared. This is probably magnified because Sonic has no one.
2. He wanted to make a friend and took this chance to road trip with Donut Lord to do just that.
3. He wasn't in full control of all of his powers. In fact, he just learned to Time Stop and Spin Attack from the film.
4. This Sonic isn't the seasoned hero from the games, and this is his origin story.
I think bowling ball hedgehog was the only thing he'd learned.
I thought those scenes were just sonics super fast reaction time and him moving in accordance to that speed. Never knew it was him just stopping time.

When running as fast as he does, how much calories is he burning?
How often would he need to stop and eat running every street in the US?
Maybe riding in the car is faster over all because he doesn't have to stop every hour and nap for three hours after eating 10k calories of food.
Plus he's only ever shown to run at top speeds for what in real time would be about 2 minutes max, so we don't know how long he can keep up the sonic speeds.

As someone who lives litterally 30min away from Deer Lodge, MT I am SUPER excited that my (almost) little town is being talked about!. ALSO, the prison is super cool and not used anymore, it's just there as a tourist attraction, and right next door is a cool car museum that is honestly fun to visit even if cars aren't your thing. ALSO, ALSO there used the be the most amazing diner there that had the BEST tomatoe soup but they closed sadly a couple years ago.

you can really tell how late they edited the numbers on the speedometer based on the sloppy editing on the numbers showing this isnt most likely a film theory fan but rather a person who just heard about this through social media etc
Counter theory: sonic doesn’t know how big the world is, So he is better of choosing a way that Will bring him to the right destination, than to guess
Edit: there is also the fact that he only read comicbooks and watched certain sports, he doesn't know this planet or should say this dimension. For all he knows the world is infinite and the city he is looking for is 6 planets away. From what we see in the beginning of the movie he doesn't leave the U. S.
But logistically he ran 1,100 miles in 4 seconds from Montana to the coast, the edge of our country, and back.. on a whim. he could easily run across the us to see how big it is, and come back in half a minute.

I don’t know if I’m the first to notice this but this video was uploaded on February 29th, 2020, if you’re confused, 2020 was a leap year and leap year’s only come every 4 years (next one is next year, 2024), so how does RUclips count this video as 2 years old but February 29th only comes every 4 years? (I should clarify this comment is sorta a joke but I just wanted to make this fact aware bc idk if anyone noticed this in the comments👍)

but it's not like he will go over every road exactly once. This is the traveling salesman problem, but on a scale that's pretty incalculable
Yeah and does he never rest? how much can he run before needing rest, also route mapping gets exponential over intersections when you don't have a clue of your destination so no, even using only the biggest interstate roads I simulated an average of ~5 days using the clue of west using southwest it takes ~1.1 days
But he's also probably going to get to San Francisco before going to every single other road in the world. So it balances out.

But that's assuming his speed is the lowest possible... In reality he's just too fast... And sonic spends most of his time running we don't know how much he needs to rest. We would be assuming here...

Also, we know from the movie that Sonic does get tired. Sonic couldn't have been running for 4 hours straight.

Here's a theory: Even though Sonic's Quill has unlimited power and can propel Robotnik's ship to sonic speeds, Robotnik can't REACT at the same speed as Sonic, so the second they both go supersonic, and Sonic takes a turn, Robotnik wouldn't be able to react in time and would crash. Very simple, but would end the whole movie.
Robotnik's mind works a lot faster than a normal human so he might have faster reflexes.

There is one major factor you didn't include: Sonic has a serious case of ADHD. Without Tom to keep reminding him what he was supposed to be doing, he would have gotten distracted by absolutely everything and likely forgotten there was something important he was supposed to be doing. He could easily spend a whole day in every city he found.
And as for the building climbing thing, most of what he did in the climax he was figuring out on the spot.
Sonic is more TDHD (Time-Displacement-Hyperactive-Disorder) But still a great role model.
My boyfriend with ADHD fully said that it seems like Sonic had ADHD.

My guess is that Sonic knows he could *maybe* get to San Francisco on his own in a much quicker way, but if he did he could be taking the risk of Eggman or someone else finding him much faster if they read his speed level or something like that
So he sticks by Tom’s side with the fake excuse that he doesn’t know where SF is because traveling by car wouldn’t raise awareness

It's very likely that Sonic would double back on himself while running. I doubt that he can remember the names of millions of streets. And running literal millions of miles is probably fairly exhausting. I wouldn't want to do that even if I were supersonic.
