You forget Sonic is technically an alien . Chances are his metabolism is absurdly efficient to the point where his body basically contains a nuclear reactor- like digestive tract . Sounds weird , but so can be those classic japanese video games xD !
Depending on which canon you follow, Sonic is powered by chaos energy. The cells of his body allow him to absorb an amount of power from the ambient chaos energy that exists in the Sonicverse. Some characters like Shadow have been augmented to more easily access this ambient energy, ie: his "Chaos Control". The chaos emeralds are basicly crystalized chaos energy rather than the source of chaos energy. It's kind of like when Sage Mode Naruto uses nature chakra instead of his or Kurama's chakra to power up.
Fun fact: if sonic could run as fast as he is, he would poop everywhere. Just imagine a line of poop coming from nowhere and just exploding everywhere.
Considering how much crap Sonic has been through over all the years it's nice to know that the people that have been working on him over the years have bothered to make sure we know how old, tall, his weight, hobbies, and pretty everything else for quite some time lol
Some of the comments mention how he's not a human and is from another dimension, so his metabolism isn't the same as a humans.... but really what I feel throws this theory out the window is just how much energy his body already contains. Just a SINGLE quill seems to carry a near infinite amount of energy. Makes me wonder if he even _needs_ to eat anything at all. 🤔
@@MichealAfton6227I agree with that. I imagine some fictional characters don't need to eat because of some unknown infinite power but they just eat because they like the taste of something.
So this is a theory of a GAME character's FILM version and his FOOD eating habits, plus this was live crafted in a GTLive episode. This is the ultimate combination of MatPat's channels.
What teachers expect us to use math for: *complex engineering, rocket science, etc* What we actually use it for: *how many chili cheese dogs does sonic need to eat to run?*
It never ceases to amaze me how much genuine time, effort, and intelligence is used to make these film theory's shenanigans. I'm literally crying laughing X"D
I have an idea for a theory. In the new Addams show "Wednesday", the titular character is shown going to a school where almost all the other characters are mythical creatures. But the Addams have never been explicitly referred to in those terms, even though they do have strange abilities to endure torture and dangerous situations. Are they human? If so, how can the invulnerability be explained? And if not, what are they?
If you don't understand what I just said, they relive their past and can predict the future due to their traumatic past, and in English folklore witches and wizards are most know for their unusual abilitys and some we're not accepted into, I mean anything.
If you wanna know, Sonic would feed on 94.5 billion dollars every year on chilli cheese dogs, assuming he takes 65 days rest and runs 8 hours everyday at 1,593,250 KM/H on the lower end of the scale. The more you know, I guess
11:24 Mat you have already got the wattage, which is joules per second! (energy per unit time) You don't have to turn it into MET, round off some intermediate numbers and turning it back into Cal per second. You could just turn it into kcal, divide by 4184, and multiply by 4 seconds, which gives you how many Cal he used in that 4 seconds. No surprise that you would get a number about 1000 times the wattage.
It's funny when you consider how fast he went in those 4 seconds, but you have to remember that he doesn't always go that fast and when he does it's in short bursts. Most of the movie when he's running from Robotnik or across the water it's like at most the speed of sound.
I love this episode. This felt like more of the SCIENCE episodes that Austin usually does. Miss that guy! @MatPat let him know that he is missed and that I hope he is doing ok ^_^
I'm pretty sure we got this theory as a sponsored GTLive episode to promote Sonic2 where Sony asked MatPat to figure it out and supplied the few clips. This goes into much more detail as the theory has been worked on and flushed out as well as being able to gather more information.
legally you have to tell the audience that your sponsored in order to show the product so he probably just had the video planned since the movie is being talked about
Matpat you’re wrong, Sonic ran faster than 54 miles per hour in that scene. It wasn’t just 9 seconds. If you pay attention to the clip, you can see that time is frozen in the movie, meaning it would probably be closer to a second at most.
As someone that loves to study exercise I love that you actually made using these formulas into a fun thing would love more content on things like this maybe the economics on how a character might run or would fighting or running a certain way be more advantageous to the human body or not
He did cover the correct footage to run with in one of the earlier sonic theories! He was checking to see if sonic ran correctly for such speeds and if it'd match the damage shown to his shoes in the movie (specifically if running on the front of the foot was fine for sprints).
I always heard the chili dog thing was some kind of inside joke because in the US, there is a restaurant chain called Sonic that has been around since at least the 1950s that is world famous for its chili dogs.
that's actually accurate. Objects moving at equivalent speeds in the same direction appear to be moving in slow motion. Think of it this way. If you're going 50 mph in a car and another person is going 51 mph in their car, that car is moving ahead of you at slower than walking speed. speed is weird
@@universalpower419 yes it does. It means the entire scene took less time in reality and that Sonic was passing those cars significantly faster. It makes all calculations based off that scene completely moot and further points to that segment being complete filler
@@pws3rd170 there are calculations based on the logic that, to make something look stopped without counting that it is time stop, the speed of a snail is used in comparison (that is, what it takes for a snail to travel a certain distance so that it is visible that it is moved, that is 1/83 seconds)or 0.013 seconds
14:00 I did the maths and for all those chilli cheese dogs sonic would have to eat for just 4 seconds of running would cost him 5,978,034 dollars if he wanted to buy them which he probably won’t.
Matpat likes to do a lot of theories on what is traditionally kids media (like sonic, some expectations may apply to that) and seams to make it dark. Maybe when he dwells back into theories like Dora the explorer or paw patrol, he should definitely do Thomas the tank engine, since it’s already got dark theories like the Henry replacement theory or the fate of the engines on the mainland
Here’s something to think about: How much energy does Sonic’s power give him? Maybe the energy to do all this isn’t just coming from him, so how much of his own energy is he using?
Can't believe that Movie Sonic burns 40 billion calories in just a few seconds like holly cow! Man, this was a really good theory Mat and I hope to see more theories about Sonic in the future!
You know what, that reminds me, ive recently got back into the sonic character drawing business cause there was a time where i havent been drawing sonic characters for s few years And you know what? I had completely lost my touch cause the way i drew em was rather a old technique my hands no longer could draw in anymore so i had the idea of imputing my recent art ways and theyve been turning out alot better then i had hoped XD
Didn’t you already make a game theory out of this? Like you said Sonic needed to consume like a million chili dogs to maintain his weight while running.
I was just wondering this. Thank you for making this comment so I know I'm not imagining things. I even remember them using the truck chase scene in that theory as well.
11:15 Basically 1,127 Gigawatts of power, give or take. For comparison, the average nuclear power plant only produces just One Gigawatt. Maybe we should get Sonic to run on a treadmill for us, it might just power all of North America, or something. At least it's cleaner than using Coal.
2:40 well given his quills exude energy so much that just one quill gave Robotnic the ability to travel just as fast something tells me he's not burning calories but rather using some kind of magical quill energy.
Well...good theory...but do you realize that in the MOVIES Sonic has an electronic aura araound him...my theory is Sonic powers himself for running and the chili dogs power him for EVERYTHING ELSE
I love how he worked so hard on. This theory, but we forgot that sonics speed is a power, and that as demonstrated by robotnic, that each one of his quills generate enough power to be a miniature nuclear reactor. So yea, I think he had the power to run that much
One thing I felt was odd to leave out was the amount of power he *generates* and how much of it he can actively use, super powers and all that. If he can generate enough to make a large EMP from a few seconds of running in a square, then how much of that energy that's being generated and leaking out, being recycled to power him up?
7:51 using the formula for time dilation, he would need to have a velocity of about 0.9999999999999999 the speed of light to slow time that much, about 4.13e25 calories
I figure he's got powers similar to the Flash where he isn't actually moving this fast mechanically but somehow speed up relatively to his environment. Hence the electric glow aura effect. Just imagine the air resistance at those speeds....
so hear me out: in the original lore sonic was given his powers through some machine eggman invented, in the movie he is just born with it. I say he has this energy in him, constantly regenerating multiplying and ect. I think that's both stopping him from breaking his legs from running AND powering him.
when sonic was running at the beginning its not hard to notice that nothing was moving except for sonic were in the next scene the truck is moving very fast witch means that sonic was running so fast that it looked like nothing else was moving
You should just use the 1/2m(vmax^2)+energy loss to friction over time x time. To find the energy in joules and then convert joules to calories. That would give you the calories needed solely for his feats without making assumptions of his biology, considering his quils contain infinite energy he might not even have a metabolism and just eats to eat
I agree with that part of "Sonic wanting to eat just because he wants to", but Sonic probably eats chilli dogs because he likes the taste(MY OPINION. Don't want to offend you)

You forget Sonic is technically an alien . Chances are his metabolism is absurdly efficient to the point where his body basically contains a nuclear reactor- like digestive tract . Sounds weird , but so can be those classic japanese video games xD !
I remember watching the theory crafting of this video on GTLive, so awesome to see Mat's thoughts roll like that
That explains it 🤣🤣🤣 i was sitting here wondering why this was so familiar!
@@MystearicaClaws same, I thought i was losing it hahaha
Depending on which canon you follow, Sonic is powered by chaos energy. The cells of his body allow him to absorb an amount of power from the ambient chaos energy that exists in the Sonicverse. Some characters like Shadow have been augmented to more easily access this ambient energy, ie: his "Chaos Control". The chaos emeralds are basicly crystalized chaos energy rather than the source of chaos energy. It's kind of like when Sage Mode Naruto uses nature chakra instead of his or Kurama's chakra to power up.
Or the flash, Barry can generate speed force, certain things can tap into it, and different people use it differently like Wally and jay.
There is a chaos energy in movie canon, it's this blue/red glow on sonic and knuckles and that's what tails detected on his home planet
4:46 i love how on the website it lists sonic's "real name" and "english name" but his english name is just the normal one in all caps 😂
11:15 IT’S OVER 9000!
Seriously though, I remember watching this on live stream and it is WAY more complicated than I first imagined.
Fun fact: if sonic could run as fast as he is, he would poop everywhere.

They dont poop that much more often than a hamster

I don't think that's how it works
Lol
Considering how much crap Sonic has been through over all the years it's nice to know that the people that have been working on him over the years have bothered to make sure we know how old, tall, his weight, hobbies, and pretty everything else for quite some time lol
Some of the comments mention how he's not a human and is from another dimension, so his metabolism isn't the same as a humans.... but really what I feel throws this theory out the window is just how much energy his body already contains. Just a SINGLE quill seems to carry a near infinite amount of energy. Makes me wonder if he even _needs_ to eat anything at all. 🤔
maybe he doesn't and just likes to
@@MichealAfton6227I agree with that. I imagine some fictional characters don't need to eat because of some unknown infinite power but they just eat because they like the taste of something.

I jokingly said 1 calorie thinking that there is no freaking way that could happen. Yet, science proved me wrong.
You kinda figure it out watching the old school show and movies, but they are decendants of witches and warlocks.
I'm pretty sure that Morticia is a witch (and maybe Wednesday is too).
They are relatives to witches and wizards throughout the medieval period, they earn their physic powers from past trauma.
1:52 yep. "calories NEEDED meter" goes up when you eat food.

I'm pretty sure we got this theory as a sponsored GTLive episode to promote Sonic2 where Sony asked MatPat to figure it out and supplied the few clips. This goes into much more detail as the theory has been worked on and flushed out as well as being able to gather more information.
You are right. That is the original video, where he shows how he makes videos like this.
legally you have to tell the audience that your sponsored in order to show the product so he probably just had the video planned since the movie is being talked about

“HOW FAST IS SONK?”
-MATPAT 2022
Yes! I love your theories!
Matpat you’re wrong, Sonic ran faster than 54 miles per hour in that scene. It wasn’t just 9 seconds. If you pay attention to the clip, you can see that time is frozen in the movie, meaning it would probably be closer to a second at most.
9:32 ITS ALL ABOUT THE METS BABY
This isnt spiderman ps4
As someone that loves to study exercise I love that you actually made using these formulas into a fun thing would love more content on things like this maybe the economics on how a character might run or would fighting or running a certain way be more advantageous to the human body or not
He did cover the correct footage to run with in one of the earlier sonic theories! He was checking to see if sonic ran correctly for such speeds and if it'd match the damage shown to his shoes in the movie (specifically if running on the front of the foot was fine for sprints).
"This is a combination of film game and food theory all wrapped up in one." that is my favourite line from any video you ever made
I always heard the chili dog thing was some kind of inside joke because in the US, there is a restaurant chain called Sonic that has been around since at least the 1950s that is world famous for its chili dogs.
sonic: runs so fast that moving cars look frozen in time
matpat: looks like he's going 50 mph
that's actually accurate. Objects moving at equivalent speeds in the same direction appear to be moving in slow motion. Think of it this way. If you're going 50 mph in a car and another person is going 51 mph in their car, that car is moving ahead of you at slower than walking speed. speed is weird
@@nathanielbass771 that was a time dilation scene. Things weren’t actually happening in real time but Matt forgot about that part apparently
@@pws3rd170 literally doesn't change anything
@@universalpower419 yes it does. It means the entire scene took less time in reality and that Sonic was passing those cars significantly faster. It makes all calculations based off that scene completely moot and further points to that segment being complete filler
@@pws3rd170
there are calculations based on the logic that, to make something look stopped without counting that it is time stop, the speed of a snail is used in comparison (that is, what it takes for a snail to travel a certain distance so that it is visible that it is moved, that is 1/83 seconds)or 0.013 seconds

You know what, that reminds me, ive recently got back into the sonic character drawing business cause there was a time where i havent been drawing sonic characters for s few years
And you know what? I had completely lost my touch cause the way i drew em was rather a old technique my hands no longer could draw in anymore so i had the idea of imputing my recent art ways and theyve been turning out alot better then i had hoped XD
Didn’t you already make a game theory out of this? Like you said Sonic needed to consume like a million chili dogs to maintain his weight while running.
I was just wondering this. Thank you for making this comment so I know I'm not imagining things. I even remember them using the truck chase scene in that theory as well.

Basically 1,127 Gigawatts of power, give or take.
That zoomed scene really made me hungry 3:15
I figure he's got powers similar to the Flash where he isn't actually moving this fast mechanically but somehow speed up relatively to his environment. Hence the electric glow aura effect.
Just imagine the air resistance at those speeds....

so hear me out: in the original lore sonic was given his powers through some machine eggman invented, in the movie he is just born with it. when sonic was running at the beginning its not hard to notice that nothing was moving except for sonic were in the next scene the truck is moving very fast witch means that sonic was running so fast that it looked like nothing else was moving
I was just nodding in awe as MatPat was saying all those numbers
It sounded impressive, but as a chemist, the fact that he didn't use significant figures made my eye twitch a little.
I love how when I see the thumbnails and titles I'm always like: “of course matpat, of course”
I made a joke about if it was 1 Calorie burned by this but uh wow I was correct at 8:59
What if Sonic's rings were gold plated onion rings? He could eat them to get enough calories to run.
Don't want to offend you)
Not to mention that him eating all those chili dogs would increase his weight by a lot of he didn't have designated snack spots on the way there.
