I always figured, at least based on the movies, sonic didn't need to eat too much compared to other speedsters because he has direct access to the source of energy that gives him his speed, the energy in his quills

This really explains why in a lot of media he's portrayed in; Sonic is shown as being somewhat lazy. In Sonic X, he rests until he has to do something due to Eggman for example.
Makes sense, it really adds to his personality in a lot of games since he's always depicted as someone that enjoys the small things in life
Character development. When he was younger (11) he wasn't that powerful and used his full energy everytime. Now that he is 18 and way stronger he also need more rest. Amd if you're asking yourself why I think he is 18 and was 11, there is a video about the whole timeline and his age
It is also said in Sonic X that Sonic has infinite energy. (a bit like the chaos emeralds) So he probably doesn't need any food and only eats for the taste.

I don't think that means that he doesn't need food, but that when he uses his powers it utilizes this infinite source of energy he has flowing through him. I would assume that normal bodily functions outside of the use of his powers burns calories though.

Some of the comments mention how he's not a human and is from another dimension, so his metabolism isn't the same as a humans.... but really what I feel throws this theory out the window is just how much energy his body already contains. Just a SINGLE quill seems to carry a near infinite amount of energy. Makes me wonder if he even _needs_ to eat anything at all. 🤔

Don't forget that Sonics body is incredibly energy dense. Just a single quill was enough to power Eggman's machine to become equivalently fast. I would hazard a guess that Sonics body is so replete with energy that he doesn't actually need to eat; he just does it because it tastes good and is fun to do, or because he mistakenly thinks he HAS to eat.
But he burns off the calories he eats or hed be huge, the quills are likely more like ki energy where as food gives him actual calories for his body to use as "energy" doesnt contain essential amino acids
It might be a combination of the two: Sonic needs food to run fast, and running even faster starts to tap into that quill energy/ki, making him glow blue at higher levels of use.
So..... Movie Sonic runs on the Boost formula, at a metabolic level.
@@mattball420 Aliens don't typically have the same biology as we do. Sonic and other characters typically run off chaos energy, which kind of just exists in the universe. I can't remember exactly how Dr Eggman used the quill, but it wouldn't surprise me if it had so much energy because it was more a way to access chaos energy than being full of energy itself
I think he still has to eat as much as mat pat explained because running at that speed would probably speed up his metabolism, and it’s hard to run on an empty stomach, trust me, it’s actually painful…

Eggman used one of Sonic's quills to power his tech so he could chase him. It mentained his charge without sonic which means it generates power on it own. Considering that sonic has hundreds of quills on his back and the fact that he's an alien, his speed might come from the power stored in his quills. Also, in the first movie, sonic first ate a chilly dog after Eggman started chasing him. I could be wrong but your they definitely need some revisions.👍

Keep in mind in the first scene, when he ran to get the bad guys, everything was frozen showing that he was actually running at a MUCH MUCH faster speed than Matt calculated and also his calorie usage is innacurate because these formulas are according to the average human and we all know sonic is no where near close to human in biology. So this theory could be innacurate, but remember its just a theory, A FILM THEORY!

It could be affected by biology, as well as the fact that sonic seems to have an extra energy source for his speed since a single sonic quill was enough to power a super-jet seemingly indefinitely.
you can just feel that he did the basic energy calculations and found very reasonable numbers so he went to biology with rediculous inefficiency when considering only one task and not the calories burned to keep you alive while you do that task then decided if sonic was as inefficient as a human during this it would be a lot of food so he went ahead and wrote the script and made the video.

Hey matpat, you should be considering that Sonic is so awesome that he gets huge amounts of energy of his food and not the few calories we get, he could do this simply by splitting the atoms of the chilli dogs inside his belly and directly harvesting the released energy, that way he never gets out of power, and that also explain why he has "infinite" power as state by eggman

Conversely, it now makes sense as to why he's considered so special.
Knuckles in the movie had the exact same power Sonic had... the same pulsing electricity powerup. We can assume every echidna does, in fact, as there is no explanation for why it would just be Knuckles.
And Knuckles never actually does anything that matches Sonic's speed feats. He does manage to hulk-style outleap a car, but that's different from running.
It'd probably be a much more believable number for Knuckles' feats. A number he can actually eat per day.
Sonic's special power isn't his speed, per say... it's the quills he has that generate infinite energy, which he utilizes for speed.
The question then becomes... how does Sonic grow those quills in the first place? And while on that topic, how do the emeralds in the movie do the same? Is it the same infinity, or a different infinity? Or is it all beyond science?

Fun fact: Chili Dogs was an American localation thing, Chili Dogs was not a thing in Sonic in Japan, They where mentioned in The JP manuel of Sonic Advance 3, but their first debut in the games was Sonic Unleashed.

Never expected to see a multi-theory on Sonic. All three channels’ power combined!
Depending on which canon you follow, Sonic is powered by chaos energy. The cells of his body allow him to absorb an amount of power from the ambient chaos energy that exists in the Sonicverse. Some characters like Shadow have been augmented to more easily access this ambient energy, ie: his "Chaos Control". The chaos emeralds are basicly crystalized chaos energy rather than the source of chaos energy. It's kind of like when Sage Mode Naruto uses nature chakra instead of his or Kurama's chakra to power up.
Or the flash, Barry can generate speed force, certain things can tap into it, and different people use it differently like Wally and jay.
There is a chaos energy in movie canon, it's this blue/red glow on sonic and knuckles and that's what tails detected on his home planet

So this is a theory of a GAME character's FILM version and his FOOD eating habits, plus this was live crafted in a GTLive episode. This is the ultimate combination of MatPat's channels.
I have an idea for a theory. In the new Addams show "Wednesday", the titular character is shown going to a school where almost all the other characters are mythical creatures. But the Addams have never been explicitly referred to in those terms, even though they do have strange abilities to endure torture and dangerous situations. Are they human? If so, how can the invulnerability be explained? And if not, what are they?
You kinda figure it out watching the old school show and movies, but they are decendants of witches and warlocks.
I'm pretty sure that Morticia is a witch (and maybe Wednesday is too).
They are relatives to witches and wizards throughout the medieval period, they earn their physic powers from past trauma.
If you don't understand what I just said, they relive their past and can predict the future due to their traumatic past, and in English folklore witches and wizards are most know for their unusual abilitys and some we're not accepted into, I mean anything.

Another thing to keep in mind is the speed of his brain. Being able to see, recognize and react to hazards when going that fast would take an incredibly fast brain. The neurons would certainly have to fire faster than a human's, whose neurons receive communication at the speed of around 20,000 mph. It makes you wonder how he'd be able to tolerate the speed of an average conversation
In Sonic Underground, Sonic is the crown prince of planet Mobius. In this cartoon nor the ones before it, Sonic was NEVER told 'no' when asking for a chili dog.

Matpat you’re wrong, Sonic ran faster than 54 miles per hour in that scene. It wasn’t just 9 seconds. If you pay attention to the clip, you can see that time is frozen in the movie, meaning it would probably be closer to a second at most.

It's funny when you consider how fast he went in those 4 seconds, but you have to remember that he doesn't always go that fast and when he does it's in short bursts. Most of the movie when he's running from Robotnik or across the water it's like at most the speed of sound.
