This is to make them think the Watchtower does, in fact, encourage them to think critically.
Must be. I was waiting for the part where he says be sure not to limit your knowledge of our organisation to just what we say, but seek out material from diverse sources, including from people critical of Jehovah's Witnesses, so that you can weigh everything up for yourselves.
There's a part in Ray Franz's book where Freddie suggests research from a Christendom guy. I can remember the push to really study and learn back in the 70s. It all started to go downhill with the Live Forever book. They briefly got some of it back in the mid 90s but by then it was too late and it was more yes/no than actual thinking. Remember when they used to use the phrase "thinking people"? Do they ever say that anymore?

So I got super angry with someone over a serious issue and they threw in my face how I wasn’t behaving in a Christian manner. I said, uhhhh, Jesus threw over tables. Don’t tell me not to get angry over things that are proper to get angry over.

as a non-therapist which you thankfully acknowledge. we come from an organization that assumes all kinds of authority which is unhealthy. you have meant a lot of good emotionally for many people.
You should know the truth always that the generation of 1914 shall by no means pass away before the end of days. A lot of JWs were disfellowshipped and thrown out on the street for even questioning that teaching. That's the truth.

It’s difficult to even break down the example of narcissistic circular reasoning that is happening in this jw org talk. But you waded thru it .Fine job.
It sometimes helps to just use an example. Absurdity can be exposed by absurdity when the object is not you but “the bad guy” - Catholic fanatics in the past (we’re talking about a not-so-distant past of a few hundred years ago:)) were known for their creed “the Church of Christ cannot err, even when it errs, since it’s the Church of Christ.” Then ask: “isn’t that absurd?” The answer will surprise you - when the interlocutor still has a bit of common sense, he will agree. Then say no more as he’ll probably going to think about it for some time.
I thought the same thing when I watched this, like "OK.... hone your critical thinking skills but ONLY read and study what We say". Then it's not truly critical thinking.
It's wrong that the GB erase previous publications........how can people be aware of the reality, how can they make proper informed decisions😮😮😮

As it happens most JWs have a discriminatory hearing and reading reflex which automatically deflects them from anything which challenges their inbuilt beliefs. I recently spoke to an otherwise intelligent Witness pointing out that even in the Encyclopaedia Brittanica the book of Daniel is listed as a 2nd C BCE book,not the exelic book it purports to be. He shrugged it off pointing to the Watchtowers teachings. Critical thinking with strict perametors

This talk isn't really about critical thinking, it's about rejecting any sort of information that conflicts with JW dogma.
Yeah, I'm pretty happy just going with the flow of the stream. Having strong opinions these days just gets you in trouble.
Have some anyway. And give yourself permission fir them to change. Truth can withstand questions and doubt, without shunning or punishing you.

The recent (September 14, 2024) "daytext" or mini-devotional published on the Watchtower website started by quoting Eph 4: 14 ("[Beware] of the trickery of men") and went on: "Young ones, Satan will try to prevent you from making further spiritual progress. ... For example, sooner or later you will come across the God-dishonoring theory of evolution.... What your teachers say in support of evolution may seem logical and convincing... Instead of blindly accepting ideas that you hear at school as fact, carefully consider the truths found in God’s Word, the Bible and in our publications."
So the "young ones" (as they are called in Watchtowerspeak) should apply all the critical thinking in the world to what they hear at school, and if what the teacher says sounds "logical and convincing", that is just because of Satan-inspired "trickery." It is nothing but "ideas." On the other hand, what is said in the Bible and (just as importantly) "in our publications" should be rather uncritically accepted as "truths."
Sir Lloyd, do you have any idea or inside information of what is comming up on the Annual Year meeting in October? Do you recon they go softer/liberal or harder?

Use critical thinking unless it contradicts with what we tell you to do. It's the same as saying that everyone has "free will" to do what you want, as long as you do what we say first. Such a joke.
It is extremely interesting, because he is telling them to think critically, but then instructing them how and when to do so... He says to think critically about what you hear from your peers, not about what you believe as a Witness. He wants them to get that JW doctrine memorized so they can combat evil propaganda spewed by their worldly peers. lol That is extra manipulative. Then they feel like they are thinking critically. But they are only being blindly critical of other's thoughts.
I am positive that JW is more and more like project 2025 as I read it it is very similar
