  • The Funk Brothers will ALWAYS bring the pain... man, this was GROOVY bro. This song has no right to be as good as it is for what it is. Motown was incredible, man. A literal hit machine.... one after the other.... and that's just stuff the funk brothers were apart of! I see the list of the hits they played on at the end of the video and it blows my mind. The vocals were amazing too...

Yes, I was 13 and remember this on my local AM radio (pocket transistor variety). You couldn't hear bass on a pocket AM radio in those days. You had to hear it on a juke box (of which at that age I wasn't allowed) Most people don't know, but Juke Box amp circuits had a ton of bass distortion built in. That's where Americans got use to loud bass, 'cause it wasn't on no AM pocket radio with a little earpiece in your ear.

That incredible bass was James Jamerson, the most influential bass player in history. He played on over 90% of Motown’s production between 1959-1971, the golden era of the company. The owner, Berry Gordon, considered Jamerson to be his secret weapon. the most important of all the musicians. Artists and producers valued him so much that some wouldn’t record if he wasn’t at the session, and they would very often allow him to simply improvise the bass line.

My favorite Motown group! Levi Stubbs sings with such passion and clarity -- every word is perfectly clear both in terms of intensity and diction. His gritty voice contrasts so wonderfully with the smooth backing - and yeah, the bass is out of sight. Imagine hearing this come on your AM car radio when it was a hit single

"The Motown Sound." When you think Motown, you think The Temptations, and The Four Tops fist. They were sort of rivals, but also good friends in real life. I watched a "Motown" Special on TV in the late 70s or early 80s, with just those two groups for the entire hour. What was cool about the show was they took turns singing each other's songs. The Temps sang "Burnadette" and The Four Tops sang "My Girl."

The same Band was used for all Motown recording sessions. Four Tops and Temptations, Dianah Ross and The Supremes everyone that was on the "Motown" record label used the same studio Band. That's why the music in all of their records, had that same unmistakable "Motown" sound. It was the same musicians for all of the artists.

This is right up there with Motown's greatest singles. Levi Stubbs is one of the most undervalued singers of the 60s, and beyond. What made him truly great is that he could even elevate 80s trash like Loco In Acapulco into something compelling.

The writers/producers, Holland, Dozier & Holland, along with the Funk Brothers and the Andantes made Motown in the 60s what it was. When HDH did a 'slow down' then left, The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas, and The Four Tops saw their hits become more sporadic. No producers understood the talents of each group and how best to utilize them. The Temptations were fortunate to be tied to Normal Whitfield and Barrett Strong. But, yes, James Jamerson is an amazing bass player...McCartney has listed him as a major influence. I was nine years old when "Bernadette" (my most favorite of may Tops favorites) and it is hard to believe the great music we had growing up. 1966 was a banner year for singles...The Beatles, The Supremes, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Four Tops, Wilson Pickett, The Hollies, The Yardbirds, Lovin' Spoonful, Mamas and The Papas, Petula Clark, Simon and Garfunkel, The Temptations...the list goes on.

The great James Jamerson was the bassist for this tune. Paul McCartney based his playing on him. There is a documentary on them called ‘Standing in the Shadows of Motown’. Don’t miss it. The Funk Brothers are in the film so we get to see who played on what and whose style it is on what song. Great film, sad story though. Really, Lee, don’t miss it. Also, if you lose faith in institutions, we lose our society. I’m saying this and I’m old and black with a history of not believing in institutions, lol. Nowadays, I’m fighting for you and your children. Not hating though.
