IMO early Chicago is the best Chicago .. love this
3 albums and 30 more
EASILY
CTA and Chicago ll (silver cover) are both island albums
Early Chicago all day everyday. Chicago's a lot like Heart in that way.
The guitar work is the obvious focus but the bass and drum deserve their own isolated tracks.
Terry, Danny and Peter were quite a power trio.
Absolutely, music to the ears. Incredible.
The great Terry Kath, the most underrated rock guitarist of all time. R.I.P.
@@HiddenSymmetry He is underrated though. You’ll rarely find him on the “best of“ lists of the greatest guitarists of all time. Forgotten in the dustbin of time. He’s definitely one of the top 10 best I’ve ever heard. And I’ve been around since the 60s.
@@CarlEichmanMusic I know Rolling Stone is a terrible magazine compared to what it used to be but it’s still a major publication. He didn’t make their top 250 for example. I’m sure there’s all kinds of indie magazines that pick him. And people in the know. But that still doesn’t mean he’s not underrated. He gets overlooked all the time from what I’ve seen.
We’re pretty much talking semantics here. There’s three choices. He’s either overrated, been given his due respect, or underrated. I have rarely seen the first two among the masses. Yes of course, people in the know like yourself and myself give him all kinds of the respect that he deserves. And yes, it’s a long time since he died so that’s part of the problem. But nobody has any problem remembering Jimi Hendrix or giving him his due respect.
@@midnightrambler7716 my posts got deleted..yeah , he's one of my fav guitarists & never got the credit he deserved...those of us into Chicago & most guitarists know the deal.
This is why Chicago is the greatest all around band of all time.
This is some of the best music ever. Terry on the guitar and Peter on "amazing" bass. Danny is unbeatable on constant drum cadence.
This album is unbelievable. You’d be surprised at who is copying ego. Hendrix himself said that Terry was better than him
An absolute banger, firing on all cylinders. 🏎️
Every single one! 👍👍🙏
My favorite poem
Excellent reaction
Thank you Lee and Shirley
🎶💜🎵
Question 67&68 is a Banger incredible middle section....those horns (chef's kiss) looking forward to the reaction
One of the best songs on one of the best albums
I use this song to both say "this is what Terry, Peter, and Danny would have been like as a power trio," and to counter those people who only know Peter as the '80s Chicago pretty-boy love song crooner. Dude had chops.
He absolutely has chops. This whole band does but that trio is DEADLY
Terry Kath was a beast on guitar!
Chicago was my favorite band for a few years. I was a little kid when this album came out. Bro would crank this 8 track and especially I'm a Man in his green '68 Mustang (like Bullitt). Great bro who turned 75 this year. He was a mechanic when I was in college and he used to give me $20/wk spending money so I always had money for dates, concerts, things I needed and other good times. Gave him and his wife a nice vacation in Puerto Vallarta for his 75th. Loved everyone in Chicago but Terry Kath was my fave.
That is so cool that you named off each horn player. They never get any love
what a debut album
Yes, Lee, all three picks are from the first CTA album. Glad you enjoyed this one. When it first dropped we were all in awe. This music is in a class by itself. Blessings all. Peace.
That’s how you come out swinging on a debut double album!!
They insisted on it being a dbl they had so much incredible material- agreed to reduced royalties cuz record pricks resisted.. then th set y insisted some for next 2-3 albums too .. thankfully!!
Absolutely fire . Thank you
I like this kind of poetry!
This is the One ❤❤ Kath is just on another level along with Peter on that Bass !!
Whenever someone is skeptical about the greatness of Terry Kath, I play this song for them and their jaw usually hits the floor. Terry, Danny on drums and Peter on bass make up one of the most talented trio of musicians in rock history.
You mentioned Hendrix: Chicago’s “Oh Thank You Great Spirit”, is Terry’s tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Definitely worth a listen.
This is my favorite song of theirs.
This is the best version of Chicago.
Favorite Chicago tune! 🔥🤘✌
No procrastinating here. I'll go when I'm ready!😅
Lee Luffnane.... Suh TER uh.... Early Chicago was just amazing! Double album after double album....
seen Chicago 4 times and always fun
Over the moon in this!
Cetera, Seraphine, and Kath. Amazing power trio right there.
For sure…. They are absolutely showstopping.
Lee, I just had to laugh when you said "that bass is good" while Terry's ripping you a new asshole on guitar. Sorry the timing was just perfect!
When I first heard this I said Chicago? This is a scorcher, rocks.
My favorite CTA track!
And like Hendrix you swear there’s a second guitarist!!!
Thank you for another awesome reaction Lee!
🔥🎸mesh with drums ! OMG! 😳
Jeez Louise these guys were flippin great on their first few albums, then spotty for me, followed by not a fan at all. Terry Kath was INCREDIBLE.
Hendrix was very impressed with Terry's playing. AFAIK he is double-tracked on this one. Robert is doubling the bass on the piano. I can't believe I've been listening to this album for 54 years!! 😊
check out Liberation from album 12 mins of guitar straight!
For a more obvious tip of the hat to Hendrix, there is "Free Form Guitar", which is almost 7 min. of guitar feedback experimentation.
Sort of
A major tribute to Hendrix is the amazing 7 1/2 minutes thank you great spirit
😊
From Chicago 8 1975
It was a very nice transition. For me, this one is mostly about Danny. But always playing off Terry & Pete keeping up.
One of their overlooked songs, but if you’re a Terry Kath fan you love it from the opening chords. This is what I expected to hear on his solo album that he never got to make
Many of the songs on this lp have a section to showcase the individual musical / instrumental ‘sections’ or members or vocalist, Terry of course stood out.. whenever there was a transition you didn’t know what was next , only that it’d be AMAZING!!
Damn Lee. Your face at about 5:20 says it all.
The face of pure Audio ecstasy lol
Love this song. Glad you hit it :)
He was some guitarist . The way he died is unbelievable. I was lucky enough to see them the first time they came to New York in 1969 at the Fillmore east .
This one 🔥
They out-Grand-Funked Grand Funk in the trio section!
Why Hendrix thought highly of him!
A double LP debut album, no filler numbers on it...never been done before.
Awesome tune by Chicago! Next, “Make Me Smile.” ✌️
I think Lee already reacted to the entire Ballet For A Girl In Buchanan, which includes Make Me Smile and Now More Than Ever.
@@charleswagner2984Ok, 👍

one of my favs the other one is chicago 5 !
The first few minutes are basically a 'power trio' section, with all three of them just going wild on ther respective instruments. An amazing song and an unbelievable debut album. For most bands a best-of album wouldn't be that good, for them it was just their first album! Robert Lamm wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on CTA, so he deserves huge props for that.
I never hear anything that sounds like two guitars. Terry does an octave thing on the guitar for a bit in that first soloing section, a little trick most guitar players know. You play the same note on two different strings, with one an octave higher than the other, and you slide up and down the neck. Maybe that's what you were talking about.
Hey There, try the song "Free Form Guitar" on Chicago's first album if you want to hear Terry Kath creatively play with guitar feedback!
@@kevintucker8909 That "song" is terrible. It is just random noise.
Lee-- by now you are figuring out just how incredible this album is. Everything on it (except Freeform Guitar) is immense! AS well as the Chicago II, III and V albums. Keep going,bro,and..enjoy. T
Listening to this now it's stunning but at the time of it's release it was competing with new music and new bands.1965 through 1975. Sgt. Peppers, Cream, Jimi, Led Zep, Janis, Grateful D., Stones, Byrds, Doors. Not even mentioning all my favorite R&B bands and singers. Blues bands. I'm leaving out 100's...Tell me what great music has come out in the last 10 years?
I find it interestin' that when posed with the question who is the greatest rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix cited Billy Gibbons 'n Terry Kath as his favorites. High praise from THE KING O' DEM ALL.
You can hear Hendrix and Cream influence on them.
Funny you mention a shower playlist - you need to listen to Terry Kath's song, "An Hour in the Shower" on Chicago III.
"Poem 58" One of the great ones from their 1st album. It gets lost in the shuffle. Liberation another lost great one was written by Jimmy to show case Terry. IMOH the studio versions are best for these 2 songs..... I am a studio or live... OR studio then live guy meaning it depends on the song.
opening studio chatter to liberation if you turn it way up it features one of the first belches other than a Spike Jones thing. It's Terry letting out a great big one before he starts it
The ONLY Chicago album I still listen to. It was a two-record debut album which was a rare thing. The only other one I know of was Freak Out by The Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa).
Jewels debut album is a double record and she was just 15 when recorded.
Peter “Sa-tear-A”
ask Terry
They were a great rock n roll band, until Kath died
Yes, but no. They ARE still great after Terry, just not as great.
Terry Kath was awesome. (Who is playing guitar?! Seriously?)
This album is great, but you may want to skip Free Form Guitar. Title sounds intriguing, but it's basically just a bunch of feedback. Everything else on the album is great. This Poem 58 song has great guitar work in it.
Agree
More Terry Kath and less horns makes for a better Chicago. They should have stayed true to their beginnings.
Every song but one. Feel free to skip Free Form Guitar...
I tried listening to this today....again. Innovative technique, but I'm missing the real music. Happy I'm not alone thinking this.
these guys have been my favorite American band since 1969....The Beatles are 1st for me... but they are not American of course.
Same here! 😁
