This applies to opiates and maybe Tylenol, Anti inflammatories commonly sold as OTC painkillers certainly have a more Physical effect than just telling your brain not to feel the pain. It tells your body to stop the swelling and inflammation.
This is true! Opioids work by binding to the opioid receptors in the brain, blocking pain messages from getting through and increasing feelings of pleasure. Tylenol (acetaminophen/paracetamol) blocks the chemical messengers that send those pain messages to the brain. NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) decrease the production of prostaglandins, which are responsible for a number of things including inflammation, blood clot formation, blood flow, and healing, so taking NSAIDs soothes the pain by dampening the natural healing response basically. The downside of NSAIDs is they are harsher on your stomach than acetaminophen/paracetamol, so you shouldn't take them if you have stomach pain without talking to your doctor first. They're especially good for muscle injuries where excess inflammation can cause adhesions and limit your range of movement potentially permanently. Basically acetaminophen/paracetamol works best for pain and discomfort associated with illness, such as the flu, and for stomach pain, and ibuprofen works better for injuries and inflammation (excluding the stomach). Both can cause serious internal damage with prolonged, regular, or excessive use, so its important to follow the instructions on the box and never use for more than a few days at a time unless instructed by a doctor.
Exactly! That's why I depend on what kind of pain I'm experiencing to determine what kind of pain relievers I need or if I need any at all. It's either just some extra yoga or chiropractor, Tylenol, ibuprofen, or an opiate.

There are two different classes of pain medications. The first is where the medication crosses your blood brain barrier and stops your brain from feeling the pain that is being sent by your body. The other stops the signal from ever leaving that part of your body that is hurting. Aspirin is a good example of pain medication that works at the source of the pain to stop the signal from reaching your brain. But medications like that get diluted by the rest of your body.
regular paracetanol based does the same thing, they just take longer to work- good for headaches and *pain*. Ibuprophen based pain killers are anti-inflammatory which is why u take for sore muscles, cramps, body aches and period cramps. anti inflammatory peoerties actually help the period pass quicker.
I only take otc pain killers when my body is sore or if I have a migraine. When these things are happening, I’m grateful for the pain shut off while I do the work to help myself reverse the pain. Magnesium. If I get back on that it prevents the migraines.
They’re not working very well when you’re actually disabled with chronic pain tho. My brain is like “no”, no matter how many drugs I’m on. They didn’t even work the first times I used them so it’s also not like my body got used to them.

im disabled. sometimes i literally cannot walk due to pain. putting strain on my body is better than not being able to walk. not taking meds would mean im bed ridden, in debilitating pain, and much more.
Uhh not exactly. If you have a minor fever taking fever reducers is gonna prolong your cold, your body is heating it to fight the virus. Pain is often times (but not always if chronic) is a reminder not to do the thing causing the pain so you can heal. A torn muscle is an example. Dumb to make blanket statements like this
as a chronic pain person I do a multidisciplinary approach. medication, brain retraining, sunshine, sleep, exercise and dieting, not going too hard, management etc. I haven't found any one thing the answer, and keep exploring.

@elissalesse8320 pain medication should only be for a short period of time while the issue heals. If pain meds is given to cover up the issue and ignore the root problem then you will continue to need medication and worse can possibly cause and addiction. Too many doctors are just passing it out like candy instead of finding the root problem and actually helping the patient
@@elissalesse8320define very often. You dont need to hop on pain meds every little time you feel a little bit of discomfort. Everybodu has aches and pains. Thats different from being in chronic severe and debilitating pain. When your pain completely intervenes with how you live life, and you have exhausted all your options, then pain meds are the answer. Just because pain meda feel good doesnt mean you should take them. Its a bad thing to be on pain meds, but it MAY be the lesser of two evils
I never liked or like taking them unless absolutely have to. Right now I don’t have health insurance and I’m developing psoriatic arthritis( paid out of pocket to see my dermatologist just to get a prescription refill for my skin ointment) my dermatologist told me that’s why my joints are hurting. I took some a few times when on vacation for the joint soreness from all the walking I was doing.
People are really stupid and think that pain medicine goes exactly where the pain is and stops it The fact that you take one pill and it solves your problems tells you it doesn't solve your problems😂
The different pain meds effect different areas. Tylenol is in general the best for headaches and muscle aches and pains...stronger pain medicine can be used with a dr.s order for a RX. Baby aspirin for children with teeth aches and if the Dr. Says to give them always pay attention to Drs directions because he knows the kids better...any med needs to be out of children's reach at all times!!!! Sometimes a warm bath and some milk or juice or water before you bath to be sure they are well hydrated. Then maybe a good book read before bed really helps settle the children down and give the meds time to work. Chances are a good night sleep helps as well!!!!
Yk what, that’s my biggest problem idk how to feel things anymore, or at lest be ok with it, it seem no matter how serious a situation is I have the same world crumbling feeling, and I have to just sit in the bathroom to cry and feel it and internally scream, even over somthing so small as I had spilt a drink I’ll quickly clean it up. I just don’t know how to mediate my emotions or how to be ok feeling anything negative. It’s exhausting having everything be so much 24/7 , and only after can I calmly/rationally access a situation. it sucks.

That is dependency. The only excuse to be dependent on pain meds is having a condition like that.@mastertrey4683
So true. Pain receptors are blocked.
Lol I was wondering how the hell does a pill know?? Thank you!
💀
That’s why telling the pain to F off works.
I remember going to ER for extreme pain in my back. They gave me Tramadol intravenously. Didn’t have any effect, I was still in too much pain.
ER just released me without anything else. They didn’t even care I was still in pain.
Tramadol IV? Never heard of that. It needs to be metabolized by your liver to work on your opioid receptors otherwise it’s basically just an SNRI.
@@Austin-cx2xe tramadol iv does exist lol.
Which is exactly why they’re called “bandaids” for pain
Well I've had chronic pain since I broke my L5 vertebra at 12 and didnt get surgery till 16. Never took pain meds ever, I mean like ever. So I've been in pain for 9,820,800 mins of my my life. Let's do the math 545,600 sec in a year times 18 years and you get that. I take pain meds now to work only been 5 years. It might not go to the exact place you need, but at least it makes my life more meaningful and full. So I agree with what your saying. For me pain made me stronger, but there are limit to what people would like to endure in a day.
I'm so sorry you had to endure so much pain, it must have been so scary and debilitating. may I ask why the the injury was not treated sooner?
@@solala1312 To put it simply. I didnt get my period intel I was 16 and they couldnt do surgery intel then. Due to the changes that happens when you hit puberty. :/ But I still think my surgery was a 90% successful. So I'm happy with that! Still in pain, just a different type of pain now.
So you never had an ibuprofen or Tylenol or was given pain medication at the hospital that lasted a day -3 days after said surgery. I’m just being literal here😂 I couldn’t take pain meds after my wisdom teeth removal surgery and was back in school the following Monday, I rarely take ibuprofen not even every year, but I’d never say “never” unless it was true😂. Hope ya heal up alright with no tweaks to the injury in the future.
@@scorpionattitude Nope they were never given to me. This was 20 years ago. But if I recall, I did get meds to take home. I never took them. My drug addicted sister actually took them. Also the fact your comparing wisdom teeth removal, to a lumbar Fusion. Then laughing at the fact you couldn't take meds, then went to school the following days. It really shows your understanding of a serious surgery. So good for you. I dont care if you believe me, my experience are my own. Like your experience are your own. I'm proud I was able to push through myself. But maybe if my mom wasn't an alcoholic and I was able too take pain meds. I would've gladly taken them to help with my broken L5 vertebra pain. I couldnt even go to school. Aslo my mom never took me to a doctor after we found put my spine with broken. Next time I did, it was four years later at meeting with the Drs who were going to do my surgery. I still have pain, but I get by. That's all I can do. I'm just glad I'm able to even sit down. Yes my mom should've done more for me, in a very rough time in my life. But she's dead now. So I dont trip over the past anymore.
@@StubbledCandyglad you're doing much better ❤
That makes a lot more sense thank you
my brother asked me, "how does it tell your brain anything when it's going down towards your stomach and not towards your brain.?" man.
hee rightt
@@skibidi-pap1hee retardedd

If only all doctors were like this
Exactly what I have to remind Dr's when they used to tell me my undiagnosed fibromyalgia was in my head..
I damn near danced out of the Consultation when I got my diagnosis.
NSAIDS actually reduce inflammation and therefore reduce pain. I’m on Meloxicam and it’s helped so much with my Ankylosing Spondylitis.
I've always wondered, that makes much more sense 😂
There are two different classes of pain medications. The first is where the medication crosses your blood brain barrier and stops your brain from feeling the pain that is being sent by your body. The other stops the signal from ever leaving that part of your body that is hurting. Aspirin is a good example of pain medication that works at the source of the pain to stop the signal from reaching your brain. But medications like that get diluted by the rest of your body.
@@rockyreyes9320 Ohhhh, I see, thanks for the explanation!
Which is why I wanted my doctors to figure out WHY I was in so much pain instead of just writing me off to a pain clinic.... lol
That’s what I tell the doctor, but they give you over-the-counter medication that does not block the pain receptors to the brain.
regular paracetanol based does the same thing, they just take longer to work- good for headaches and *pain*. Ibuprophen based pain killers are anti-inflammatory which is why u take for sore muscles, cramps, body aches and period cramps. anti inflammatory peoerties actually help the period pass quicker.
Ibuprofen reduces inflammation which does actually help the pain instead of masking it.
Exactly. I only take pain meds when it's unbearable and the brain doesn't want to hear it anymore lmao.
I only take otc pain killers when my body is sore or if I have a migraine. When these things are happening, I’m grateful for the pain shut off while I do the work to help myself reverse the pain. Magnesium. If I get back on that it prevents the migraines.
Exactly why as a substance abuse therapist I despise "pain management" clinics
They’re not working very well when you’re actually disabled with chronic pain tho. My brain is like “no”, no matter how many drugs I’m on. They didn’t even work the first times I used them so it’s also not like my body got used to them.
same. i use ice packs to help with inflammation bc im hypermobile and have alot of other joint issues, ik alot of people use heat pads too. also idk what ur situation is but i also use KT tape to keep my joints from hyper extending and stability, and mobility aids are always a great investment!
Taking meds will help you heal.Just dealing with it puts strain on your body.So actually not helping yourself by not taking meds.
so true. the muscular stiffness and tension, and the stress hormones that comes from dealing with pain, greatly affects healing.
im disabled. sometimes i literally cannot walk due to pain. putting strain on my body is better than not being able to walk. not taking meds would mean im bed ridden, in debilitating pain, and much more.
If only it stopped the mental pains
Yes, and the source of the pain remain untouched
Btw u don't have to hold that angle to show ur jaw
😭
first pass from the intestine to the liver before reaching the general circulation. All labels say may cause liver damage/ failure. Pain medication is located in amygdala,🧠 which is often considered the home of negative emotions and responses, like the fight or flight response and general anxiety.
I went on a course the other day on how to explain pain and that medication is not always the answer.
Id scream at someone if they didnt give me painmeds if im in pain!!
@@lunatigannie8860 😂😂😂😂
but it is very VERY often the answer.
Maxalt goes straight to my head
Thank you for clearing that up...
And that's exactly what I want them to do...emotional pain included...lol
People are dumb enough to think it’s targeting the pain’s exact location? Now I’m depressed about humanity
It's not dumb there are certain medicines designed for that
Pain receptors can't recept without perceiving the pain.
Depends on type of pain medication being used.nsaids help reduce inflammation that causes the pain too
They don't even do that they just make you tired so you sleep through it.
So true lol
Lol can’t feel it if your asleep 😂
hope this is just a joke lol
If this was the case we'd just give people chloroform
It’s exhausting having everything be so much 24/7 , and only after can I calmly/rationally access a situation. it sucks.
im always happy to listen and talk. shit gets rough sometimes, and its ahrd to deal with that.
Beats " you're just going to have to live with some pain".
When I hurt my back i refused to take anything. I needed to know where it hurt so i could strech it while avoiding further damage. Was able to fix it by myself in a week. Younger me was out for months with the same injury.
My mom is part of the big Pharma lawsuits from people getting horribly addicted to these… because doctors never explained it to them and they ended up hooked. So sad and alot of the people have died since she started
Exactly you’re speaking to the choir as someone who struggled with opiate addiction for years
I prefer just not feeling pain. Only issue is it really fucks with me when i forgor i turned it off and am frustrated that im moving slower due to exhaustion withoyt knowing
Yup exactly what a dr told me too.
Yea i also tell myself most of the time, you’re not sick get up. Just bc i don’t want to be sick. It kind of gets me going
You’re pretty
I have a really high pain tolerance. Even after a couple surgeries, pain meds have never had any effect so usually just dump them.
Never down the drain or toliet! Look up proper ways to dispose of medications!
Just do IBU 800 with Tylenol 500 that might help
WOW! I had no idea! I always wondered how do pills know! Good thing you explained it! That's you're the doc! 6 years of medical school at work here!
Yep! My mom worked in the medical field so I’ve always known since I was a little kid
I became addicted to opiates for 17 yrs through pain management.
I am in my 8th yr of recovery and i feel no more pain of the addiction.
When i thought i was in real pain i now know it was my body craving more.
What difference does that make if the person has relief? It’s a doctors job to help them heal. The meds are there to help relieve
You are the best looking surgeon on RUclips for sure
I was legally prescribed opioids for several years and in the end my pain was actually worse while taking them. I weaned myself off of them with my doctor's help and I'm glad I quit taking them. I've found better alternatives.
And they’re YUMMY!
Doc you are awesome
I'm a chronic pain person, and my brain creates pain even though the injury healed up long ago. pain killers sort of work, sometimes, maybe. the brain is very determined.
that’s why pain meds are so dangerously addictive because if it’s metal or physical pain it numbs it
Pain is used to get us out of danger, if we’re in pain and we know we’ll be okay pain medication is an amazing thing…unless your my mom who got addicted.
So beautiful
Well there are peripheral analgesics and central ones. And I guess one could argue they all work in the brain to some degree whether directly or indirectly
Doesn't ibuprofen work by reducing inflammation? I get it for opioids but anti-inflammatory are the go to for pain for most people
Obviously but they work. They are effective and safe treatments for after surgery or chronic pain patients
How do triptans work for migraines? Aren’t they supposed to specifically target the migraine pain? I’m genuinely curious
Same reason during heart attacks that the brain sends pains in different areas cause its freaking out
Yup....i avoud them as much as possible. Dont remember taking them in last 8-10 years.
Just got a tooth extracted and an implant put in! The worst pain ever. Also happened to start my period at the same time. So my jaw and uterus are killing me. Doc gave me Tylenol 3 which has codine mixed with it but it took away my cramps and not my tooth pain 🙃 my jaw is still throbbing in my head
But they also help reduce swelling or fever right?
but different pain meds work differently tho? thats why u take paracetamol based for headaches, and ibuprophen based for period cramps and body aches?
yeah this is just borderline misinformation
I figured lmao 😭 but idk
I only ever use them when on period but even then i hold off on using them until the pain gets unbearable and i cant move. Thats why i dont need to take em each time, some months are less painful than others, for me, depends on what i eat and weight
Fantastic - anything to just have a minute without any pain is gladly welcome .... Pain doesn't just hurt you, it hurts your soul, i find myslef angry at people who dont know the feeling of constant pain.
My sister will complain about pulling a muscle because shes being moving or lifting something wrong... I have fibromyalgia and i am nearly always in pain: tooth ache in my bones, stabs of pain that stop me dead, horrendously bad period pain that i need contraceptive medication to handle and migraines that attack me day or night - alseep or awake 😢😢
I think there should be more done to help people with their pain
I only take my steroids and pain meds when I absolutely need them. I'm in pain constantly due to many things and losing feeling in my hands and bladder sometimes bc spine issues but without the meds I would have no life. Pt and chiropractor help alot but only go so far. Im deathly afraid of meds so it's a constant battle I've had my whole life
Praise be to GOD may he bless you for your astounding great work!
I'll ask her, why are my eyes telling me this world is beautiful.
I love being able to boss my brain around
