    I've come a long way with my shopping habits, low buy and my debt repayment. But minimalism has been the missing piece that really brought everything together for me. These are the 6 ways minimalism has helped me stop shopping.

    I'm semi-mortified by the amount of clothes I bought this year. I've completely run out of space to buy anything new, which has forced me to really reflect on the shopping I've done and the debt I've accumulated. I appreciate your honesty and advice about enjoying what I already have!

    My journey into minimalism has been so profound for me. The biggest lesson I've learned thus far is how little I need to be content and the longer I've spent time with each item it's forcing me to be honest with myself.. It took me 4 years of low buys, no buys to lead me into intentional spending and I have to thank you for introducing me to Dave Ramsey, his outlook and method resonates with me.

  • @carolbohn5900
    @carolbohn5900 3 года назад +11

    I found it so interesting that with the low buy you still had the desire to shop more, but willfully stopped yourself. With minimalism, it seems your thought process has actually changed to not wanting to buy as much. Quite a lightbulb moment for me, as someone who shops too much for my income. As an aside, I think online shopping has widened our scope to see what's available worldwide. Good in one sense, but dangerous for those of us with addictive tendencies.

    I am currently on a path to minimalism because although I love getting new things, I HATE being surrounded by clutter. I would buy new things and then look around my house, feel panicked and start to find things that I could declutter. I would get rid of things that I hardly used just to make room for the new purchases. It was a vicious cycle that was putting me in debt. Now I only buy what I need and I’m trying to replace the high of consuming new stuff with the high of decluttering. It’s definitely a journey.

    I am thinking about removing shopping apps from my phone. I’m finding myself shopping out of boredom or habit. And I am in debt. And I’m trying to pay for grad school. Did I really need that 100.00 sterling silver bracelet I bought last night off Etsy? Nope. It amazes me that at 43 years old I am still caught in this trap of materialism that always promises happiness but never delivers

      It’s a very difficult trap to get out of, even when you think you’ve beat it. The constant marketing we are subjected to ALL THE TIME is nuts. You got this! I think I’m buying less and holding out for something I’d really really love. Strangely I’m quite minimal in every aspect of my life other than fashion. I really enjoy getting dressed every morning and trying new ways of styling things. But I was in a cycle of rewarding myself with clothes and buying emotionally. Don’t think I’ll ever stop shopping, but when I’m tempted by eg the Zara sale, I think: would I prefer to wear Zara or prada today? And the answer for me is prada. And if I don’t buy lots of Zara often, I can buy that one piece of prada that I can wear and enjoy all the time, and slowly build up a small designer collection, which I’ll use more often because I’ll have less.
    Also I like watching some stylists on RUclips who give me loads of ideas on how to wear stuff I already have in interesting ways.

    christina, i just want to thank you for such inspiring, helpful, vulnerable content that you dont often come across on the public accounts of fashion bloggers who are clearly having a shopping addiction and masking it behind their "profession". you are living proof that loving fashion and being a fashion blogger is not an excuse to get caught up in the constant cycle of buying. i love your journey and it inspired me to think more intentionally about my purchase choices and really analyse my consumer behavior. for example, since 2019 im keeping track of all my purchases and also trying to plan ahead with a budget and clear descriptions of the items that i need or want, which helps a lot with impulse shopping urges. you're right and it is a journey that forces you to be honest with yourself, which at the end of the day is the hardest and most rewarding thing

    Hey Christina, thank you for sharing your journey, I've been following you since the beginning. I still struggle a lot with searching for validation through my stuff, mainly clothes & make up. I find myself quite lost and lonely, I have to admit, after many changes that have deeply affected me (becoming a mom, miscarrying my second baby, now 7 months pregnant with my third, moving and changing jobs...). Somehow, I KNOW that getting that blazer will not complete me in any way, but I still crave it intensely. I try to be gentle with myself, but most months, I am ashamed of my spending habits. Anyways. Thank you. Love from Belgium 💕

Indeed, to want less is key to contentment. Thanks for your lessons.

    Hi I don’t usually comment but watching today I just felt I had to because I know exactly how you feel and have been through the same process, I started watching your channel about a year ago after searching how to stop buying clothes, when you said you just stop caring about shopping and something clicked it was the same for me I was browsing around the shopping mall looking for something to buy or on the hunt ( yes I have watched the minimalists 😃 ) I looked around me and it was all women the same age has me and I thought is this it is this how it’s always going to be pointless shopping and I just had enough went home with my bags of clothes I just didn’t need tried them on and a week later took them back and asked for refunds £200 🇬🇧 worth I didn’t even realise I spent that much 🙈 it hasn’t been a easy process but I have stopped I have spent time through COVID decorating the house bought home items sensibly and 3 months of no clothes buying on a journey with the help of minimalism, a lot of watching minimalist channels and taking on the mindset of minimalism which have really helped x thank you for your help with your channel best wishes from the UK 💕💕

After deluttering bout 50% of my stuff, trying no buy then low buy can really relate with seeing it as a journey and process. I tried your suggestions, including using depop. Thankyou this is working with the low buy and in a way reducing my spending on clothes etc.

    I've been changing my shopping habits in the past year or two, and you summarized it all so nicely in this video. I related to everything you said. In my case, I came across minimalism first and started exploring that. I loved the idea of having less things to take care of and removing clutter from my life, and that motivated me to reduce my shopping to the bare minimum. And saving money during the process is a bonus :)

    What’s helped me shop less, and I do mean a very actual shopping addiction in every sense of the word….has been the overwhelming desire to quit my job that’s making me miserable, but there is no backup job, just extreme burnout and trying to save my sanity. When I do finally quit, I want a hefty savings, and at least the life skills to get by on very very little since I will have no future income. The daily grind and misery for the first time in my life has now tipped the scales more than my strong shopping addiction has in the past. ……Here’s to a better future

    I have been a "minimalist" for about 5yrs now and I definitely have the ups and downs...sometimes I stick to my minimalist ways to the T and sometimes I got influenced by social media and bought stuff I dont really need. It really is a process and I'm trying not to be too tough on myself when I'm in the "down" mode.
    Minimalism is tough to practice when you have social media bombarding you with marketing 24/7.

    I completely agree with you, social media has bombarded us with so much imaging of constantly needing the newest and latest things has made wearing clothing we already own a novelty. I have never been a huge trend chaser, but I will admit I have been sucked into it sometimes. I still enjoy some pieces I have had since my university days. If only i was the same size then...who really needs to button a blazer anyways 🤣🤣. I have been really enjoying your low buy/minimalist series. COVID-19 has definitely reshaped the way I shop, especially since now that I work from home, there really is no where to wear nice clothing to 🤣🤣. I totally agree that it's a a journey and there are ups and downs.

    Simple joy: caring for your beloved piece of clothing. Attending to a spot, soaking prior delicate wash, hanging on the rack to dry, folding it nicely to its place :) Please do not think I have nothing else to do, I have two jobs, large family to take of, highest degree possible and I am busy as hell. I grew up in Eastern Europe, clothes were expensive in the 80th, but well made. My husband suite, still looks phenomenal. I think it is kinda cool. Your thought of spending time with your clothes made me think of it. Great video! I especially love your delivery.

    YES GRRL. YASS!! I love everything about this video. One thing I've learned is how important words are to me. Certain words resonate whereas others really don't. I love the minimalism community on YT because everybody is drawn to their own words but it is basically the same thing. I love minimalists who concentrate on the "sustainability" aspect, or people like Vera from Simple Happy Zen that focus on "slow living". With you it seems like the word "intentionality" really resonates and I love that. For me, my favorite word to describe this philosophy/lifestyle is actually "minimalism". I feel lighter, less stressed out and more stylish AND confident with my all black everything, monochromatic, capsule wardrobe. Keep up the good work!!

    Definitely trying to work harder at not thinking about acquiring new stuff. My only expense really now aside from the obvious is fashion. Even though I'm all about thrifting and ebay I still acquire the odd thing here and there that to be honest, I did not need. I've recently done another de-clutter of the wardrobe and thats IT for 2020-2021, I'm putting myself on a no/low buy.

    I have learned that I shop to maintain an aesthetic that I might’ve outgrown. I like colorful button-down shirts with circular patterns. I am wearing jeans more after spending over 30 years wearing skirts and dresses. Finally accepting my new style has helped. Now I am intentional about decluttering. I am holding on to my things while they are packed away. I have stored stuff in one location where I can pull out the stuff I thought I wanted to give away. I shop less because I can shop my storage spot. I only buy quality pieces that I actually use. I think your point about using our things is so important. There is a great TED talk by a nurse who talks about how people die before using their things.

    I’ve not shopped for over 2 months as we have a goal of moving into a flat and we need to buy furniture for it. I have to say Black Friday was very hard but I did not buy anything as I know we need a bed, sofa etc.. not another dress. But my god the want to shop was crazy. It’s really made me recognise how bad my shopping addiction was. But I know that want to shop does go away and I don’t need to act on it.

    I'm incorporating minimalism and lowbuy this year and decluttering. My boyfriend and I are moving state next year so I'm I the process of decluttering clothes, jewelry and makeup. I've got one makeup medium bag I want to declutter more though it's pretty curated but there's some extras i bought and just don't need or use or might be expired.

    I have made a bag with things I love but dont wear much because I have enough clothing. So instead of buying something new when my clothes no longer can be worn I can replace the clothing easily with something from the bag, so I dont have to use money on something new.

    I really need this. This weekend hella reinforced that I have shopping addiction. I love the principles you outline. I'm doing a lowbuy in 2021 (aka the only thing I'm buying is my regular book subscription box and 5-10 new release books for 2021 from authors I love). I'm going to dupe new makeup products with what I already have and do a "treasure bank fund" (Hailey Evans on here talked about it) where I only give myself a very small amount of cash to spend each month so I'm not mindlessly shopping with my credit cards/online

      Same here. I have some debt I'd like to pay off, but books spark a lot of joy for me and since I work from home full-time, I don't spend money on transportation, eating out, Starbucks, etc.

    How do you deal with receiving gifts for the holidays? I am always grateful for presents but it can be overwhelming at times

    • @Christinamychas
      @Christinamychas  3 года назад +9

      I asked for no gifts specifically from friends and family, but to be honest I still definitely struggle with the physical product that sometimes comes with doing content creation on IG/RUclips, especially in the fashion space. I noticed I need to vet it much more closely. For example I have plans to move away from fashion in the coming months because the “new clothes” gifts always seem like a great idea at the time, then I get really overwhelmed. It’s definitely a process and slowly but surely learning what works, or if I just have to stop and say no altogether.

    Becoming disgusted with fast fashion has really helped me as well as focusing on quality natural fabrics. Now I thrift even more than before and buy quality clothes on sale by planning ahead. But now I am dealing with the urge to replace every cheap item I hate but still use with cashmere or silk. I want to drown in those fabrics, I'm trying to replace that feeling with the thrill of watching my credit card balance go down though. It's hard though, fashion is such a source of creativity for me.

    I’m in debt to myself (by a lot now). I have such troubles with not spending money on clothes, make up, skincare, food, ... I bought 4 trousers which are too small for me because I want to loose weight but I order fast food way too often. It’s been 6 months now and I’m still not close. I decluttered about 6 months ago but my closed is full again.
    I am I addicted to spending money that I order something to just have it for 5 minutes and then send it back. It’s embarrassing. I’ve never been like this but it’s getting worse and worse the longer our lockdown continues. I hope I can change

      I am the same way. I do really well, months and months of paying down debt and then I binge instead of eating, I binge on shopping-sometimes designer items. It's awful.
