The colonization of the past is different from the colonization of the present.
The past was physical which everyone could feel and see
    But
The present colonization is mental that one can not see it but feel it and money where people are volunteering into slavery in search of money to survive.

There was no country called Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, or other Africa Countries with these present names or borders: the White people gave these names when they divided Africa at the Berlin Conference.
Blame the White Man for capturing your ancestors and returning them back to Liberia.
You all should learn to live together in peace . The “Konqua” as you called your fellow citizens are descendants of your lost cousins who came back to Africa specifically Liberia and Sierra Leone ( by the British).

Why is this comment allowed to stay? It is divisive and also INACCURATE.
African Americans came and BOUGHT the land from some of the chiefs in the area to start over in Africa after becoming free from slavery.... But then, for reasons unknown, they bought the land but then also had to share it with the people they bought it from? I don't understand that part of the history. If I buy a house from a family, that family doesn't get to stay in the house and live with me afterwards but that's a different discussion I guess.
When African Americans established Liberia they witnessed first hand, the local tribes still partaking in the illegal slave trade(they were taking Africans to the coast to sell to the Portuguese) This obviously offended Liberians(talking about newly settled African Americans in Liberia) and they took direct action to stop this trade. This upset the locals, as it was effecting their trade.
As a result, local tribes regularly attacked the small and fragile Liberian settlements for over a decade until the Liberians decisively defeated the local tribes and peace was established between the Liberian settlements and the local tribes.
As a result of these early interactions, the Liberians(so called americo Liberians) rightfully distrusted the local tribes and tried to keep them away from Liberia.
Over time, though, more and more trust was established and Liberia began to integrate the local tribes into Liberia proper(making them Liberians as well) this included adopting children from local tribes, providing schooling, apprenticeship, training, and stable jobs in the government. Some were even sent to Europe and America to go to American colleges and universities and come back to help Liberia. This was a great system that was expanding more and more under Tolbert as he truly tried to integrate the natives into Liberia.
They were also allowed to join the military and over time became the majority of the military personnel (this was obviously a mistake)
So as you can see, Liberians WERE integrating the local tribes into Liberia but the native population decided that they just wanted to take over everything and killed most of the Liberian ran government in 1980.
Having taken over Liberian with all the infrastructure undamaged and ready for use, what did they do with it? They destroyed it all in stupid tribal wars and Liberia is still recovering from it.
Judging by the upvotes for the original comment it seems that anti African American(so called americo Liberians) feelings are still there which is sad because they were not the ones to actually destroy the country.
At this point(2019 going into 2020) there should be no more talk of natives vs Congo people(so called americo Liberians)... We should all just be Liberians from now on and follow the example set by Rwanda.

Colonization was not always done by Countries. Parts of America were colonized by the Hudson Bay Company. India was colonized by the East India Company. European countries gave charters to companies to establish "outposts" in the Americas, Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. These outpost is where they established trade and later started to push their cultural imperatives. It is important that people understand this part of history because it is happening again. A country does not have to be conquered to be colonized. It can be colonized by controlling its trade, commerce, official language, dominant religion, form of government, etc. It's 2019. Time to rid ourselves of the Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome and the Colonized Negro Mind Dysphoria. Peace!!

When they say Liberia was never "colonized", they mean it was never part of a colonial empire. Look at any global map of colonial empires, and Liberia is never colored in, say, "blue" or whatever, indicating that it was part of a US colonial empire (unlike actual former and current US territories like Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, etc).

  • @jnorm888
    @jnorm888 4 года назад +42

I accept the explanation of most of the ones who commented in the video. The free black Americans who created Liberia through the American colonial society were already westernized. However, many aboriginals on the green coast (Liberia) were also westernized(more than those inland) because they were use to trading with Europeans for centuries. So it was easier for the free black Americans to integrate with some of the Native tribes on the coastline. The friction was mostly with the less westernized natives further inland who had an alliance with Great Britain in whom they traded with. There was also a culture conflict. When the black Americans arrived at the green coast they complained in their journal that some of the natives were selling slaves to the Portuguese. It should be obvious why freed black Americans would have a problem with that. However, with that said I also believe that black Americans went to far in making the Natives Assimilate. At the end of the day the conflict was about a difference in culture and not knowing how to live in harmony with such differences. This is a lesson for us to learn from! Black Americans will always be connected to Liberia but we need to learn from the mistakes our ancestors made. We also need to reconnect with the country and it's natives. All of its natives! We have to learn their languages and customs as they learn ours. This way we can overcome the cultural divide that caused the civil war.

We are talking about Control. And there are various levels of control. It was/is recognized as an independent nation. It was a member of the League of Nations during the height of Colonialism. It had/has Black political leaders. Colonialism's definition includes full or partial political control, occupying the land with settlers and exploiting it economically. I would say 2 out of 3 there. No white settlers, but if you call the freed slaves settlers, and agents of America then you could conclude yes all 3. I would say that Liberia has always existed in a state of Neo-Colonialism when most of the rest of Africa was in regular ol' Colonialism.

Our Liberian brothers who said "No" are attempting to explain colonization away by using semantics. They are in denial because it really doesn't matter whether an invading entity is a country or an organization... if outside forces take socio-economic control over another peoples skills, land, wealty and natural resources, they are colonizers. If Liberia wasn't colonized, they would never have had to reclaim their independence.
In reality every corner of Africa, including Liberia (who was occupied by American goverment forces) and Ethiopia (which was not formally colonized, but was definitely invaded and occupied by Portuguese and Italian forces) were colonized, or oppressed ( if thats what you want to call it) in some form or fashion. These European tyrants left no stone unturned...just terrible.

There isn't any European countrie that follows Oriental Orthodox Christianity. If someone in western Europe depicted some saints as a "white" it doesn't mean that Christianity is white. The accurate answer to this question is NO. The ACS established colonies in what we call Liberia today. Other similar colonies were also set-up in what we call Liberia today(e. G. The Maryland settlement) eventually, all the separate settlements came together and decided to become one and declared independence from ACS. Thus Liberia was THEN established. So again, Liberia was not colonized.

No, Liberia was not colonized in terms of how colonization is defined. Liberia nor Ethiopia fell victim to the “Scramble for Africa.” But if you want to say Liberia was colonized because of ACS’ presence than add Ethiopia due to Italy’s.

Liberia wasn't traditionally colonized like other African countries. America established it under the ACS (American Colonization Society 1817). 1847 Liberia became independent from America. Liberia technically was colonized by America from 1817 to 1847. America established Liberia for freed African American Slaves to return to Africa. These people were called Americo-Liberians. Liberia is the most American place in Africa. As an African American, I am blessed to be African. Liberian learn American English in school. Americo-Liberians ruled from 1847-1980. During this time America had their hand in Liberia until the coup was done and the Americo-Liberians were overthrown. Charles Doe was the first indigenous Liberian to rule 1980-1986. He was of Krahn ethnic group. Thanks, Wode Maya for this video. @Ewarton Charlton Brother, Ghana did not exist at the time of Marcus Garvey. Garvey Negotiated one million acres of land with President Charles D.B. King. (A sellout) However, the British and French strong armed President King into arresting and deporting Garvey's people when they arrived in Monrovia. They didn't want Garvey's rhetoric of Africa for Africans in the backyard of their Colonies. After this, the Americans conspired to have Garvey arrested, sent him to prison and deported him back to Jamaica. Liberia is the manifestation of Pan-Africanism. The Americo-Liberians only made up 5% of the population when they first arrived to Liberia which was called the Grain Coast by the Portuguese who were engaged in trade and commerce with Aboriginals dating back to the 13th-14th century. Today the Americo-Liberians probably only make up 1-2% of the Liberian population. The indigenous Liberians or Abrorginals/Native Liberians make up 95% of the population and have 17 tribes which include the Loma, Kru, Kpelle, Krahn, Grebo, Mende, Gio, Mandingo, Sapo, Vai, Kissi, Dey, Gola, Bassa, Bella, Gbandi and the Fula(Fulani). 16 to 17 African dialects are spoken in Liberia with English as the national language and you do have the Colloquial which is Liberian Patwa English spoken by local Liberians.🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷

The history Liberia did not begin in 1822. We should not forget the Natives. the indigenous Liberians were not under the control of European powers when the Americo- Liberians arrived. The Americans originally landed in Sierra Leone but were rejected because Sierra Leone was under British control. They were forced to go further down the coast to Liberia where the Natives controlled their own affairs. The natives told them they can "sit down" here. And the rest is history. The question should why was Liberia never colonized? My theory is, Liberia is unique. Most of the natives tribes belong to the same secret societies regardless of tribal affiliations. In those days the "Zoe Bush " is were decision were made. In more modern times, President Tolbert, Doe and Taylor all had to join in order to gain the respect of the natives. It makes it more challenging to exert control if you are not a member. The French, British and Portuguese did not think it was worth the effort. The most overlooked group in the history of Liberia is the Natives. When the whole continent was learning to speak English, French and Portuguese, the Americo-Liberians arrived and didn't find anybody speaking any of those European languages. The Americo-Liberians in my view were also brave. Many of them died from Malaria. Their story is one of heroism. However, more study needs to be done to understand how 350 miles of Sea coast was left under the control of Natives when on one side of them, you had French and on the other side you had British. Without Indigenous control prior to 1822, the story of is not possible.

@Ewarton Charleton, you think you know our history better than we know it? You definitely sound like a hater! Find something else to research because your information is very wrong. And yes, I am a Liberian.
Understand this...if we (Liberia) had not experience 14 years of civil war in Liberia, I don't think the comparison you made about Liberia with Ghana would hold. Know this, Liberia played a major rule in the independence of alot of African countries and many left their countries and obtained naturalization in Liberia in the 40's, 50's, 60's and early 70's. We trail blazed as the first and best in alot of things during that era and time period. You even mentioned Rwanda, their war and genocide did not last for 14 years. Ours did and lives were also lost. Now, the difference is the people who are put in offices to rule and what they do with the resources.
Please, don't speak from emotions or what you think. Do a "thorough" research before you start trying to debate about Liberia.
Try to listen and learn instead of going in everyone's post trying to argue about Liberia. Liberia and Ethiopia are the only countries that were not colonize by any other country in Africa. It's a fact, take it or leave it! "Remember, all history is not written. There is oral history, passed down from generation to generation." Our forefathers were able to account for that time period and they would know if Liberia was colonize or not to pass it down to generations. We know our history, good, bad and ugly.

Though Liberia was founded by freed American slaves, it was still considered as America’s only Colony and Protectorate in Africa.

Liberia was never colonized by America. America does not recognize Liberia as a colony therefore it’s not colonized. America was just afraid of the creed slaves and decided to send them back to Africa. We were influenced by the freed American slaves but we were never a colony of America.

ACS was an Organization that took upon itself to repatriate slaves back to Africa. When the slaves arrived, there were indigenous Liberians in Liberia. This is why The slaves called “Americo Liberians don’t have a specific county because they came late. Liberia was not colonized by the USA. Liberia was only used as a receiving country or region for free slaves.

Liberia was indirectly colonized by USA unlike Ethiopia which was fully independent. There was oppression of the locals in Liberia.

Countries are organizations. They do business, they budget, they invest and do a lot of similar activities outside of "war". The United states is an origination and it does business through the fed which prints its "money"

In reality that was brief and does not amount to full blown colonization in comparison majority of African countries that adopted aspects of colonist cultural from language, religion and governmental structure which is not the case with Ethiopia. But a tough pill to swallow for the majority of African countries.
