- This is part of the South of the Sahara Collaboration where I cover the American Colonization Society and its takeover of Liberia.
A series covering the American Civil Week By Week. It's made by a single person (me) who edits, acts, and writes the production. Hatred and Prejudice are not something that is accepted on this channel. A thorough and much needed breakdown of an all too often, overly simplified situation. I don't think many people know just how complex this whole ordeal was with the ACS and the founding of Liberia. Thank you for being a part of this collaboration! It was a pleasure working with you!
And it was a pleasure working with you
It really does confuse me that Liberia is always talked about as having "avoided" colonization merely by not being part of the Scramble. Even after its independence, Liberia was subject to heavy political influence and financial assistance by the US. It's really only since the Second World War that this has no longer been the case.
I assume it comes down to us (Americans) not wanting to reckon with the ACS and our role in the many deaths
It's bizarre that Liberia is characterized as "never colonized", when it was literally a settler-colonizer state imposed by force on the indigenous people.
Indeed
Agreed, branding goes a long way in history
I'll be sure to share this video with my American and World history students!
I expect a lot of jokes at my expense but hey students are students
It's fascinating how people's views on race could be (and still are in some places) so wrong. White Americans loved to separate Europeans with similar skin tones and yet they threw a bunch of African Americans onto the soil of an African kingdom and thought "they're basically the same, how could this possibly go wrong?" Then again, they may just not have cared.
You hit the nail
You deserve so much more visibility, what a great video !
Thank you very much
A very well done video! Also, I just gotta say that set of yours is awesome.
Thanks a bunch! That set was my pride and joy
I like that you're willing to just say they are idiots.
The usual deference toward Historical figures, just because they are Historical figures, hinders so many people and their reasoning.
We should treat men like men. They were idiots sometimes and geniuses the other.
Great video! I like how you cover other topics beside the Civil War.
Thank you I hope to do more in the future
Great video! I’m doing a presentation on this topic in school, and this video helped a ton!! 🙏
Hey, that intro was awesome!
Sadly it wasn’t mine but yeah it is epic
Whoa. I had no idea! I'll definitely look into this!
It was great working with you
Always found this a very fascinating and concerning piece of American history more people should know about. Important to know that not all anti-slavery advocates were necessarily abolitionists.
Agreed the difference between the anti-slavery advocates is an important part of the second half of the 19th century's USA politics
If you think that Jehudi Ashmum is a funny name, what say you about January Suchodolski (author of that painting you used to briefly illustrate the Haitian Revolution)?
Kind of funny to me with the last name, but what makes a name funny to me is something I can't explain
Should really be taught about more in U.S History classes.
Agreed
It's easy to mock, and at the end of the day much of this situation was a shit show due to lack of caring on many American politicians parts, but on paper the idea of "we kidnapped these people from this place, so let's just send them back" makes sense
I guess, but I would hope that they would have thought it out more
We were here long before The Slave Trade. Not all Black people in America was brought here. I need that truth to be told.
It's free real-estate... until it isn't
Yep
😳
😎
It took the united states 15 years to recognize Liberia after it claimed its independance, but only one day after Kosovo claimed its independence. I wonder why.
For many reasons, U.S. involvement in the Kosovo War, and of course southern senators not liking recognizing a state run by Black people
@@CivilWarWeekByWeek Thanks!
Liberia only the country that on earth
How dare those rayciss wypibo force africans to live in Africa
By that logic if you kidnap some spanish people, make the live on another continent for a generation or two and then drop them into Poland with no food or money, there shouldn't be any issues, right?
