How on earth did Roy Barraclough keep a straight face , these sketches take me back to my childhood , when Cissie and Ada’s were in abundance , Roy and Les portray them superbly 😂

Sublime. Sadly I doubt if we’ll see comedy as brilliant as this ever again. The characters, the dialogue, the mannerisms are all so spot on and natural, it’s hard to imagine how this could have been scripted.

Silently mouthing words has an interesting history with older northern ladies. Apparently cotton mills where many of them worked when young were so deafeningly noisy it was the only way to communicate there. And as they could all read lips so well, it could also be used to discuss 'delicate' subjects in the street.

I think you'll find that there were just as many Transvestites back then, but society was a lot harsher then and being discovered could end careers and destroy whole families. John Hurt as Quentin Crisp in 'The Naked Civil Servant' shows just how badly treated Transvestites and Crosdressers were. And if you've ever fancied seeing Roger Lloyd-Pack (Trigger) from 'Only Fools and Horses' dressed in drag you'll LOVE 'The Naked Civil Servant'!!!

@wordscapes5690 it's not that people believe it's something new but rather that these days we're expected to say that they're transgender rather than transvestite. Trandvestism is a deviancy and so shouldn't be in your face in the street. It's a world away from comedic impersonators or true transgender or just gay. It seems today we're supposed to believe that all the aforementioned are on par with eachother or interchangeable. Total nonsense.
