- Video on replacing car key battery for a Subaru Crosstrek / Impreza. The process is the same for most Japanese car brands. The difference is often a different battery, such as for keyless start.
I recommend you get a small screwdriver, but everyday household items may work. I used the screwdriver on my swiss army knife for example. Please don't use a knife or a sharp object.
Battery:
CR1620 for this remote.
If you have keyless entry, this is the most popular battery used. But you can google your car remote battery and find the right one:
CR2032

Awesome!! Super clear video... I was wondering how it would work. My key fob stopped working this morning. TIP: when my key fob wouldn't work, I found out the key didn't work either in the door lock! ** It hadn't been used in so long the lock was jammed. Luckily I had some W D40 to spray into the door lock so I could get in the car. ** My tip is to occasionally use the key in the door lock so it doesn't jam up from lack of use.
This is happening to me now! The WD-40 does nothing 😭.
@@JoeSki42 I'm so sorry to hear that! Give it a rest and the key fob may be able to open the door in a bit. That happened to me.... In the meantime, order an extra battery for the key fob. Subaru may have a way of opening your door, this can't be new to them! blessings and good luck
Explained in exquisite detail and very clear. This video guided me through the process and saved me spending $$ at the dealer, thanks!
thank you for the great explanation
Thank you so much!
I was doing deliveries when my car suddenly wouldn’t unlock. Luckily, I was near a Walgreens and found the right battery and the right video to help me!
Thank you!
Worked perfectly. $6 dollar 1620 battery from ace hardware for me.
Bought a CR1620 and it worked. Thank you so much!!!
Worked like a charm. Thanks for posting.
Thank you! My key fob stopped working this morning.
Shout out to you! Saving broke college students so much money! DIY!!
Thanks so much for this. I did break one of the tabs, of course, but that was my fault. You warned us! Very helpful video.
Thank you very much. My key stopped working this morning, right when I was about to leave to buy my dream car. Thanks to this video it was super easy to fix, works like a charm again.
Awesome! Thanks for the comment. What's your dream car / new ride?
@@MikeMu 2015 GT Premium convertible w/ auto transmission. "Dream car" as in I've wanted a car like this for years and the opportunity fell into my lap.
This was so easy and cheap thank you so much 🙏👍
My 2016 xv (Australia) takes a cr 1620 and the inner transmitter box has 3 miniature Philips screws instead of click tabs
Was your XV imported from Japan? Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much 👍
This video is helpful.😉
Thank you!
Cant find a video on it anywhere they are all like this one!!
WELL PRODUCED EFFECTIVE VIDEO - thanks!
Many thanks for uploading the video, appreciate it
Thank you 🙏 Super helpful!
Nice Cybertool S. I EDC an M and L. 👍
Well done video. Thanks for the help!
Great video. I have a non-digital multimeter, but not sure how to use it to test my key-fob battery. I set it to DCV 5, then tested. The needle goes to 2.9 on the 5 scale.
I also tested my spare key-fob battery, unused for 4-years, and it registers 2.8 volts. Why would an unused battery show less volts than one used every day for 4-years? Should I replace these batteries? Thanks.
They are fine. They are 3V batteries so anywhere close to 3V is still good. Car remote batteries using coin cells typically last a really long time before replacing even with daily use.
10 year shelf life? My Key fob struggles to lock/unlock my car after 3 years. I literally stood outside of my car last night pressing "unlock" for 5 minutes before it finally opened.
I think they mean in a lab. Careful about the cheap ones they sell online. I imagine they are the ones that are on the last few months of that 10 year shelf life.
Why wait 5 minutes when you literally have a key on the end of the fob
Thank you so much for the video upload! I have some CR2032 batteries. Would one of these work as well? Or does it have to be a 1620? I have a 2012 Legacy with key entry.
2032 won’t fit. Has to be similar size.
@@MikeMu thank you for the quick reply!
I have a 2016 wrx and it uses the 2032
lol I was trying to understand why you taped your car key along the teeth.
does the key fob needs re decoding or there is some possibility of erasing code and cost of losing posibility of locking or unlocking car after a battery charge?
Key fob won’t need recoding.
@@MikeMu mine didn’t work so… i think they do
@@DiamondNinjaPig yeah mine to wtf
@@theviper6602 any updates? Having this issue too
My fob wasn't working after replacing the battery. 2012 Outback 3.6r. I pressed the panic button and car went off. Now the fob works
My fob doesn’t have that little slot in it. Ugh
Does this work for a Subaru Crosstrek as well? I have the same key.
This video was based on my Subaru Crosstrek, so most likely yes.
This is not like my subaru XV 2015 there is three little screws to under I think!!
Possible that you got the premium keyless option?
What if I eat my finger nails, should I use a screw then?
I've used the corner of used credit cards, IDs, hotel keys to open it up. Stack 2-3 and use the corner. Otherwise, flathead screwdriver is the way to go. It won't take a lot of force most of the time.
Don’t you need to reprogram it?
No. Not if you were using it with your car already.
Mine doesn’t work with the new battery
@yvesangus7569 if your car also lost power then it needs to be reprogrammed to the key (sometimes).
Coke scoop nails.
lmao
You never said what battery to buy. What a waste of time. I do appreciate that you show how to do it but man is it a 2025 I mean silly
You will find that 15-16 seconds into the video. Along with links in description. 1620 for mine. 2032 for keyless types.
@@MikeMu How fantastic are you to get right back to me with that information. I truly appreciate it and like I said the part where you instruct on how to do it was excellent so my bad. Respect.
Thank you!
