Using ravens to find land had been used for thousands of years before Floki. It is mentioned in genesis, but the story in genesis has been hacked and altered to be more of a good vs. evil story instead of the original.
Because ravens are smarter than other birds they will not fly off if they don't see land. They will return to the boat. If they see land they will head for it and it will indicate the direction of land as it will b-line for the land.

Her legend stretches further than even Floki's. In the very end of the show, they find America, and Torvi is revealed as this woman:
