- Here’s a drag race you weren’t expecting to see… Until today!
We’ve got Mat in the all-new MG4 XPower, and it’s racing off against the all-new BMW M2!
Now on the face of it, you may think that the MG is set to get absolutely crushed! But trust us, this is no normal MG. You see, whereas the normal MG 4 is equipped with a single electric motor that can deliver 203hp, the XPower comes with dual motors and the ability to produce 435hp and 600Nm of torque! That’s enough to propel it to 60mph in just 3.8 seconds, and amazing, it only costs £36,500! It’s the heaviest car here, though, weighing in at around 1,800kg.
Then we have the BMW M2. It comes with the same 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six as found in the latest M3, but the output has been dialled down slightly, so it’ll produce 460hp and 550Nm of torque. This power is delivered to the rear wheels only, and it tips the scales at 1,725kg. If you’re looking to buy one new, it’ll set you back around £65,000.

Probably not even needed, I bet the cameras they have can do at least 120fps in 1080p, maybe even 240. Also, they should shoot at a much higher shutterspeed, that will make the cars less blurry.
They can use an electronic sensor like they do in drag strips if they wanted to be scientific. I just don’t think they care enough.

@@re14437 true, but if they raised the height they would have to use a camera with a global shutter as a rolling shutter can give skewed results at these high speeds. Without that, is it actually better to stay low and keep it fair. (Sorry I'm a camera nerd)

He didn't jump it. Pause the video before Andy starts lowering his arms, then use the "." on your keyboard to fastforward frame by frame and you'll see that when Mat started moving, Andy's arms were already coming down.

Despite the ability to catch up with the MG, the usability of any performance in setting off or overtaking the car in front (real life scenarios) only needs about 3-4 seconds for day to day benefit. So the MG would see the benefit in almost all scenarios except legging it from the police on fast roads.

Yep, especially when it's two lanes that merge into one when racing off the lights. Even though the BMW eventually catches up, the MG would have already pulled into the single lane and the BMW wouldn't be able to overtake. 😂
The M2 just destroys the MG in every single facet of motoring, and it doesn’t actually beat the m2 so this is an irrelevant comparison imo

@@Maarten_vdagreed. I think 100-200 cannot be beaten by an ICE. But I’m sure 95% of petrol heads do not buy performance cars for their 100-200 but the emotions they provide elsewhere which can never be beaten by an electric car.
Even though that roll race was "cheated" it was 100% realistic. Sadly that's how street races are nowadays someone doing 3 really fast honks and taking off so that he can say he won, not to see which car was actually fastest.

Sad part is that the person jumping is scared and at the ends posts as if his car is faster than the other despite the results. Just by doing a drag race then it’s changing of guards? LOL. That’s why Top Gear measured their cars’ performance based on laptimes, not drag races. These MG EV junk will be nowhere near the M2 on a track. And lets do 20 laps of that track. I would be surprised if the EV does not catch fire and be gone with thermal runaway.

I’ve driven the MG4 Xpower it’s Savage launching 0-60 3.8 claimed, actual 3.2 there is no new car for £36.450 that comes anywhere close. I’m going for the slightly slower Smart #1 428 hp 543Nm Brabus for other reasons. Plus it’s £7 more expensive.
This, like I'm glad anyone can buy a sub 5 sec car now for around 30-40K but it just doesn't feel special anymore.

@@MrLense I don’t fine electric cars special at all tbh. They are decent-ish as a mode of transport if the journey isn’t long but in terms of how they feel they are the beige of driving. The Model 3 performance was one of the most disappointing cars I’ve ever driven. I want one of the Polestar 3s when they become available, they look good, quick enough but don’t try and be sporty or "fun", just a big overweigh lump of metal to get me to my girlfriend’s house.

@@MALIK_15. My BMW M550i just got it’s first oil change it now got around 2000km on the clock. And it went very well. It goes like crazy on the German Autobahn, especially in the top end that V8 just pulls. Where the MG is reaching its top speed my M550i can easily shift down two gears and accelerate even harder 😂

MG is all you need lol, just to get to the next set of light before you have to stop again. Yup BMW faster on the motorways, but that gets you a faster BAN! and points. Love both cars but i have the MG. If MG made a 60k MG-x ? give it some kind of gearbox, 2 speed or 3! to get it off the line and to have a nice top end speed!?

Now, there are a bunch of other internal combustion cars which would beat the Tesla and there are very few electric sport sedans but dismiss EVs at your peril. They are coming.

Lets just stop and consider the fact that an affordable comfortable quiet family hatchback can run a standing quarter in 12 seconds. I remember being excited when my modified 1996 WRX got below 15 seconds.
MG ZR and Metro 6R4 can keep up with M2 easily.

If it was on 70,5% in reality, it only had to drop 1,1% to 69,4%, which is totally normal when you discharge the battery with over 300 kW.

For the money the MG still did well.
