Omg ur sooooooo encouraging! I get extremely nervous at the THOUGHT of singing in public....I even get nervous recording! Thank u sooooooo much for the pep talk!
Very timely video! I'm going out to karaoke tonight, first time in over a decade. Last time I tried I choked and got booed off stage. That was a traumatic experience. I finally regained the bravery to put myself out there again, and will be putting this advice to work.
Dear Justin, I'm watching all your videos and taking notes of everything I need. I feel like a dear friend who comforts me in my singing journey. Thank you from the bottom of my heart God bless you ❤️ P.S. I sincerely hope that one day you will read one of my many comments. A hug from Italy, in particular from Assisi, the city of San Francesco.
Wow, this is amazing advice; so often we lose ourselves trying to impress others when we should really be focused on being ourselves, & good call on the acting out the singing! So good.
Honestly these 4 tips are GOLD to me... Particularly 3 and 4... As someone who always has been a people pleaser... Tip 4 is what I'm most going to work on. Thanks so much Justin, your videos are so good for the soul! 😭😭😭
Thank youu! You rock, I came across this video with excellent timing, for I have an audition this Thursday and I REEAALLY don't wanna sound like I don't know what I'm doing when the truth is indubitably on the contrary, Thank God I found this video when I did! from here in Florida I say ROCK ON!! \m/
Thank You for this, although i don't suffer from nerves very much the acting and just having fun part was very inspirational, be proud to know that you have the best vocal coaching series on youtube!
this helped so much!! thanks lol because i get nervous. not necessarily nervous to sing, but nervous that i'm not gonna sound good. i overthink things too much
I'm an 11 year old girl. My dream is to become a singer, and i'll do anything to make my dream come true! I love your videos, your very helpful! I always get nervous even recording... But this really helps, thanks! :)
Haha i just realized that in 2012 u commented on this video..u were 11 year old and same goes to me...but i am watching this video in 2019 i am 18 now...btw howz everything going on now??
I am in the exact same boat. I know a lot of people are, but at the very least, if I feel comfortable around someone or around their critique, I am fine and sound beautiful, but say if i'm singing around my parents whose critique means so much to me, I tend to feel incredibly nervous and then I don't sound so good as far as quality goes.
That is not uncommon. The closer we are to someone, the more we care what they think of us. If a stranger hears us, they might never see us again. Seems backwards, doesn't it? Our families should be our soft place to fall. Perhaps you could have a heart to heart with them about how much their support means to you. Let me know what happens.
I just watch every video where are you Justin and I'm very close to day when I sing front of many peoples but it's not my first performance but now I know how to calm myself down
Very good advice and the one about preparation is definitely important for me but I could also add a few more ideas that could help people with their nerves. I think the most important one is: practice performing. Singing as a performance is a skill in it self and as with any skill, the more you do it the better you get at it. So try to sing in front of people as often as you can and remind yourself it's normal to be nervous. Most people would do if they were in your shoes. And it's even okay if your performance sucks. Just remember that you'll get better. Think about it: no one would expect to sound great if they try to play the violin for the first time, yet they assume that getting up in front of people should come naturally. Even though for some people that's true, there are individuals who seem to be natural performers, for most of us that's not the case. But that's fine, just practice it. And not only for real but also when you're by yourself; visualise singing in front of people. Picture every possible scenario, from worst case to amazing, and tell yourself it's alright, whatever happens. Keep in mind that any performance is just one in a long line of experiences and try to enjoy it. Good luck!
Before every show I used to walk the stage and try to touch everything I could. The idea was that if I touch everything it's now mine. And not mine in the sense that "I own the stage!" but in the sense this is now my living room. And I'm throwing a party. And the people out there are the people I've invited to come and watch me. Touching everything felt like I was cleaning my living room before a party. They say "picture the audience in their underwear". I don't think that's right. Instead it should be "picture yourself in your socks." This is your space. This your party. And you're opening the door to let the audience in to that.
thank you so much for this. I have been singing all my life but when I sing a lead part I sound good but unsure of me singing it right. then my whole body shakes it gets so embarrassing because my nerves over come my voice.
Thank YOU Ynita for your wonderful support! We are so glad to be a part of your vocal journey and are wishing you success and confidence on your path :) Happy Singing!
I was rereading these as Justin just hired me to answer his comments. So I thought I'd do a follow up. How are the nerves doing? Stage fright can be a good thing as it shows you care. Also, if you make the song more about giving a gift and have it be about the audience and not about you, that can help. Another trick is to pretend you are a character, then it isn't "you" who is doing the singing and makes you feel less vulnerable. Maybe put on a pink wig! Let me know if any of these tips help you.
Impressing people are for impressionists am I right? Ha, be yourself and you won't impress anyone. I like that a lot. Thanks man. Also, I just sat back with my eyes closed the whole video and listened while I exhaled slowly. I'm feeling good. I ought to sing that James Brown song.
Hey Justin, great video. Do you mean with "exercise routine" something like just going scales up and down, lip trills and the like? Or is there a complete singing-"continent" I'm missing out on.
I'd say check out Justin's vocal training course: voicelessonstotheworld.com/page/vocal_course It's fabulous and affordable. I personally think he should charge more for it. Thanks for asking!
Hi Jack! We recommend the VLTTW Vocal Course. It is designed for precisely what you are describing! Hope that is helpful! www.voicelessonstotheworld.com. - NYVC
