CATHAY PACIFIC's ULTRA LONG HAUL BUSINESS CLASS | NEW YORK - HONG KONG | FLIGHT REVIEW
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- Hi guys, this video is about my recent flight from New York JFK to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific's Boeing 777-300ER in business class , this was an all-daytime flight which departed at 10:00 (NYC time) and arrived at 14:00 (HKG time).
This was my first ultra long haul flight, which took 16 hours and was over 8000 miles long.
The appetizer and the main course were a big disappointment for me, I guess Cathay's US catering is the culprit here.
The lack of a matras was a disappointment too, it's a 16 hour flight after all..
Flight attendants were great especially the purser who was interested in me filming everything.
The plane, the flight attendants and the food, I would rate it a solid 8.
Some details about the flight:

Singapore Airlines shows Cathay Pacific how to do it: watch my flight review from Singapore to Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines' business class.
ruclips.net/video/PT9F0OEKdhE/видео.html
小哥厉害了啊中文字幕怎么搞得
U sure this is a -300ER variant? I believe this is the -200LR...
Bingo Richards Cathay Pacific doesn’t operate the -200LR variant.
@@CloudNine1 for reals? They don't? So I believe that was United's Newark to Hong Kong flight and they utilized the -200LR variant. Correct me if I'm wrong. I saw one. I just forgot.
Bingo Richards United has the -300ER and 200ER (so non-LR) in service.
I took a similar flight from the West Coast to Hong Kong. What's interesting is the entire flight is almost completely over land. Great for anyone nervous about flying over the Pacific!
GFI888 Could you explain what you meant by “the entire flight is almost completely over land”? Are you saying the plane flew kinda northwest over California, Oregon, Washington, western Canada, Alaska, over some (cold) water, then down over Japan or the Kamchatka peninsula, and so on and so forth, until arriving into HK? I’m going out on a limb here, but that flight path could be related to the so-called Great Circle routes, which all long haul and ultra long haul flights use, because it’s the shortest distance (more or less) between two points on a sphere. Use your favorite search engine and look up “Great Circle routes” to see how they work. Have a nice flight, and happy Landings.
2:52 spot me in the back while at work 😂
Thank you for taking the time to make this presentation. The food looked “passable” not great but “passable”. I agree with other commenters that clearly CX is cutting corners (where perhaps they shouldn’t) in food services because of their financial situation. Might be a big mistake in the long term.
Nice video. That fish you had looked like a slice of apple pie.
At 14:11 "Matras" is a very creative way of spelling "mattress" :-)
Mistakes were made ;)
😆
The tray used for dining has got to go! It makes the new dining concept look cheap. QR/BR/SQ don't use trays. Also, CX really needs to provide a mattress in Business Class.
Super amazing video!!
Damn, the GE-90 .... beautiful!!!!!
Great Video!
Nice trip report. I like Cathay Pacific, too
Love it that you say 'hi' to captain Joe when you sed a Catholic plane!!
Brilliant trip report. You had a perfect engine view. I even find the burger and the wonton noodles more appealing than the first meal, they need to improve their catering service.
Cathay has really slipped over the years, as at one point they were very competitive with Singapore. However if more recent flight reviews are any indication, they've gotten a bit better. Seeing how hard airlines have been hit by the pandemic, I'm afraid they may return back to cost-cutting, which is understandable but will be disappointing. Cathay has always been responsive to feedback and to their frequent flyers, so hopefully when times improve, they can go back to being truly one of the best airlines in the world. I've seen some extremely impressive flight reviews on EVA, so I may be giving them a try in the near future.
Great review, even watching the engines "spin around".. .now I like that! :)
Thank you so much!
Crazy, you did this flight only 4 days before me!
Very nice mix of airport..and then internal and external aircraft views... take off.. landing... on board announcements etc. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you so much!
Great review 😀 😀
I am always amazed when flights go up and over the arctic circle to get someplace. I always just assume a trans-Pacific flight just went right over the big blue wet thing like I did when I went to Japan many years ago.
Now flights from Japan pass near the Arctic (Finnair to the go)
13:36 the wonton noodle soup looks very nice tho
Good video
This route used to be operated by A340-600 while the Hong Kong to New York via Vancouver is a B747-400. That was back in 2005 to 2006 where you have the same seats but Only regional flights have recliner style business class seats. Hong Kong to Manila is an example of that.
The inflight meals of CX used to be very good, but it seems that they had a "cost down" conduct. That was bad!!!!
Excellent objective review. Not the usual B.S.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! I will be flying this route in business class too next month so it's nice to see what's it's like!
Happy that you like it!
Great jurny
Nice video
Thanks!
That dinner looked shockingly bad!
Interesting report. Thanks for sharing. That bowl of soup at 13:40 almost looks more interesting and sophisticated than the entire menu on those back plastic trays. I have never flown Cathay and expected them to be among the top Asian carriers but that uninspired food presentation and kind of "neutral" cabin interiors do not really motivate me to ever try them out.
Oh, and Cargolux and Captain Joe - henceforth one and the same it seems. That's what you call "personal branding" I guess ;-)))
Thank you for the nice comment Pit! I appreciate it!
I have a feeling that somebody at the Cathay Pacific Flight Attendants Union fought hard to allow the use of trays during the dining service. This way they have less work to do. Unlike on SQ/QR/BR where they actually set your table just like in a restaurant.
Can't tell if that was full power on takeoff or not, regardless, still a phenomenally powerful takeoff
WOW!!That take off roll was nearly 50 seconds long!!!
Yup we were heavy that day!
@@CloudNine1 Yup. Cathay was like "we pay for take off, so we use all the runway"
It makes sense the takeoff roll is long, as the plane has to carry a lot of fuel to fly that far. That in itself makes the plane very heavy. Then of course, there's the passengers, bags, and cargo. Unless the plane is flying with very, very few passengers (like during the pandemic), and hardly any cargo, I almost always expect any plane that'll be flying for 13-16 hours, to have a long takeoff roll.
Hello friend! Where have you bought that stabilizer shown at 04:23?
I also liked and subscribed
@Cloudnine, thanks for the review. I look forward to my first trip on Cathay Pacific from Dubai to Vancouver via Hong Kong on their 330 and 777/300ER in business next month. Interested to compare the differences.
IS IT JUST ME OR DOES AIRPLANE FOOD TAST BETTER THEN REGULAR FOOD??
xoxo pEpPa I think it depends on the airline, and whether you’re in Fir$t Cla$$, Business Class or Economy. But on a serious note, (really) I seem to recall a short (1/2 hr) documentary about how airline meals are prepared, and one of the catering managers (may have even been a VP of the facility) explained that airline meals are, in fact, made just a tad bit spicier, hotter, saltier, or sweeter than “regular” food, because of 1) The cabin air pressure, and 2) The very dry air in the cabin. He explained those 2 factors tend to dull (slightly) humans’ ability to taste things, so the food is prepared in such a way as to compensate for the cabin air pressure and humidity. So I think you’re one of those people who can actually detect the difference between “regular” food and airplane food. With that said, passengers can still request *all sorts* of “special” meals, such as No Sodium, No Sugar, Vegetarian, Vegan, Halal, No flavor, No peanuts, No Lettuce and Tomato’s, No onions, No dairy products, etc.
Bon Appetit on your next flight at 35,000 feet.
Super!!
Thank you so much!
The burger is superior to anything else I've tried on my trans-Pacific flights with them. Eastbound I usually fill up first at The Pier lounge, skip the meal, then have the burger later in the flight.
I will be flying this route in November of this year, my flight out of HKG is in the morning so i'm not going to eat a hamburger at 7 AM haha
@@CloudNine1 did you do it?
@@lilytsui3015 I did eat a burger on the plane! You can see this review on my channel :)
@@CloudNine1 no I mean did you take the flight out of HKG last November?
@@lilytsui3015 Yes I did! I didn't upload a video of that flight though as I was unhappy with the video quality.
Great video man! May I ask where you got the piece that you stick it to the flight window to stabilize the camera? I had been looking to get that thing but no idea what bring and where to get it. Thanks! :D
Thank you for your nice reply! I use the Suction Cup & GorillaPod Arm from Joby. I bought the phone holder on Aliexpress.
I think it's fine for long haul with first or business class. From JFK, EWR or any northeast cities of US to HKG, it takes around 16 hours, for those in economy class, it's definitely a nightmare.
It's probably way too long of a flight for most people, but I don't feel that way at all. Although I haven't done this flight on Cathay, I've done it many, many times on United, and especially on Continental (before their merger), from EWR-HKG. It might be because I'm blessed to be able to fall asleep sitting completely upright in the seat. Watch 3 or 4 movies, get some sleep, get up and walk around a bit, listen to some music, look out the window, read my Bible, listen to a sermon message. Those 16 hours go by pretty quickly. I never hesitate to book this flight in economy.
It’s bearable on CX if they still operate the 3-3-3 econ configuration (most CX 77W econ cabins have been converted to denser 3-4-3 config). SQ econ is great too. But CX is fastest & has most options for US East Coast HKG.
Thanks for the video. Do you feel that the service from Cathy has declined? Is there another carrier that flys from NY to HK?
I may be wrong but I believe that nowhere in this entire video of yours do you ever mention the aircraft that you’re flying on. From my experience that is a 777 but don’t you think that should be something that you would mention at the beginning? You seem very critical of small insignificant issues with an appetizer and a mattress which you don’t even known how to spell. I have been flying Cathy Pacific since the early 1970s and there is not another airline in the world that has come as far as they have to provide the safety security service and performance of any major Asian airlines. You are a total amateur and should give some “commentary” as watching engines and you complaining about one food service that is not appealing to you will not get you anywhere.
Hi Neil, with this video I target both people who want to view the service as well as plane geeks (who like to see these big engines). And yes you are correct that I didn't mention the type of plane, it was a 777-300ER. I'm aware I made a spelling mistake with the mattress, I hope you can forgive me as English is not my native language.
I get the strong feeling slowly CX is losing its cred as a 5-star airline. Their meals used to be a highlight of each flight. The poor presentation and bland food show the airline is losing its wings.
I know the airline is in serious financial trouble, so this could all stem from that. At this point, Taiwan's China Airlines has more cred than CX as a world-class airline. You can compare their service and catering against CX's business class.
I have that feeling too, I will be flying EVA Air's business class later this year. Their business class is one of the best in the world (comparable to SQ/NH/QR) according to many people.
They are one of the best ! You should have a great time onboard ! Will look forward to your review.
CX is not in serious financial trouble anymore...You can refer to their latest Annual report. And China Airlines should be one of the most dangerous airlines in the world? lol
Cathay Pacific recently trying to collects some feedbacks from loyal customer like me.. They are trying to fix their services.. and yet safety is still the number one that we should consider about. If their service was not good.. they r human too.. 😂
Wu Timothy I think you're in a time warp with China Airlines‘ worst years during the 90‘s up to 2002, which was their last major crap. But since then---which is over 17 years---they've been pretty spotless and they've revamped their planes and service to compete with the big guys.
That chicken thing looked like it was for a dog.
That cathay delight drink looks really good. I wonder if it tastes as good as it looks.
Yes it did!
I flew this a month before you, one of the last flights with the old trolly service & plating which seems so much better. Do they now often run out of “snack” items like burger & wonton noodles since they are also offered as main courses with the new “newspaper” service?
I don't think so, I have a newer review of this flight on my channel too.
nice,so luxury, are the flight attendant s pretty?
16 hours???? Aren’t you flying east??
May i know if the crews on your flight are friendly or stone cold like robot? 😂❄️🤖
Btw, food look erm..... Pretty disappointing though
They were friendly! But yes the food was disappointing, I reviewed this exact same route again and then the food was much better. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/uxe2jr069ZM/видео.html
Does anyone notice something unusual about runway 13L-31R at jfk in this video
OK i get that you like the engines! but far too many minutes wasted watching them spin round.
What was that Bee Gees song?
Food all looked great to me.
Well it was edible, but I don't think it lived up to the Cathay Pacific standard..
What's wrong with the food? As a Malaysian Chinese myself, it's not that bad looking.
Soup with your fish would have been nice
im goin on this in like 2 days!
I spotted a United Airlines plane taxing.
Wassup??
nice video! food soso; CP should improve!
Thank you!
great video, but not great service and catering, I expected better from Cathay!
Thank you for your comment!
Seriously, can't believe they only served such a small amount of food on long haul flight
What kind of tripod is that you used to mount the phone on the window?
I use the Suction Cup & GorillaPod Arm from Joby. I bought the phone holder on Aliexpress.
Anyone else cringe when he stabbed the wontons? lol
It’s called a “mattress “ ..
I’m not a native English speaker.
JFK taking distance is really long...
I've flown this route and on the plane 4 times.
The food and the flying experience from JFK - HKG is disappointing for me because of the food that's loaded onto the plane from JFK, and probably because of jetlag. But from HKG, the food's actually great and the experience is fantastic.
To my experience, if you wanna fly to any Asian countries with UA, I would suggest you to fill up your stomach before boarding
Haha yes United's catering is not impressive.
On average, how much do these Business Class flights cost?
I see 8200 USD on Google flights, but I didn't pay that (thank god!).
Appetizer and main course disappointed. No mattress for a 16 home flight. And you rate it an 8? OK.
Yup I did rate it an 8, the lack of a matras was disappointing but I the seat was comfortable and I got enough sleep. Maybe a 7,5 could work too. Thanks for your comment.
Can someone pls tell me the name of the smartphone holder
Hi, it's from Joby. joby.com/nl-en/suction-cup-and-gorillapod-arm-jb01329-bww/
The clamp to hold the smartphone is from Aliexpress.
Before the Covid nightmare.
No business lounge at JFK before departure?
I did go to the American Airlines Flagship lounge before my flight, I uploaded a separate review on my channel.
Cx still bad... Try SQ
SQ don't fly from JFK to HKG direct though....
Well, I uploaded two reviews from SQ's business class last week, one from Singapore to Frankfurt and one from Frankfurt to New York JFK.
SQ’s catering & service tops CX any day but their old biz seat was hard & annoying to have to get up to flip the back into bed mode; latest SQ biz seat much improved tho. But CX lounges at HKG are leagues ahead of SQ’s SIN lounges. Can’t win it all... but oh QR is excellent - seat, catering, service, lounges.
Five star coverage
Thank you so much!
What's the food name?
Heard they gonna remove Toronto staffs...
What do you mean?
Nice video..but way to many ads..cant subscribe to this
homer3152 point taken, will make changes to that. Thanks for your comment!

Why did everyone turn around @2:59?
They looked back a couple times before that too. I'm guessing they're making sure a family member who's behind them is indeed boarding.
And its features. Not it’s features. Ii’s is short form for “it is”.
Thank you for your comment, English is not my native language so I hope you understand ;)
It would be brutal to do this flight ✈️ in cattle class😱
Not really, not for me anyway. Although I haven't done this flight on Cathay, I've done it many, many times on United, and especially on Continental (before their merger), from EWR-HKG. It might be because I'm blessed to be able to fall asleep sitting completely upright in the seat. Please tell me what tripod thing is
Hello Josh, I use the joby suction cup & gorillapod arm.
Thank you so much
It's airline food geez
Nice report
Thank you so much!
CX's biz class product is not on the same league as QR, BR, NH or SQ anymore. These four are the benchmark of international premium travel.
Have you ever Been to India ??
I have 😀
@@CloudNine1 Indian Airlines Are So Pathetic , Specially Air Asia .. You ll feel like you are traveling in Bus 🤭🤭
Plan flight business class next time.
Which aircraft is it?
Boeing 777-300ER, registration B-KQK.
No lounge?
I did visit the American Airlines Flagship lounge but I decided not to include it into this video because I think it would make the video too long. I think I will upload a review of that lounge later.
I would never fly CX, for couple of reasons:
1. Expensive ticket, CX rarely gives discount for business, especially on routes from North America to Asia.
2. CX has nothing, other than Lounge. In other words, lounge food is far better than plane food.... I call CX, Air China HongKong Branch.
3. Food quantity, quality is miserable... to me, I only give it a 3 Star Airline. Fly Eva, it’s 100 times better than CX.
No idea why so many people still love CX.....
Yes EVA is great, but for my travel patern Singapore Airlines is better. Better flight times and a bigger network in Asia.
Also nice to see that you are a big Star Alliance fan just like me ;)
Jangan bisnis klas aja dong,,, itu mah sdh pasti bagus,,, ekonomi klas dong yang lebih banyak orang nya
What contrail? 😄😂😂
You can see the reflection of the contrail on the engine.
Raily I am annoying the video
Take a lesson you US carriers!
Well they are taking lessons actually, United Airlines is doing a great job with their Polaris business class.
CloudNine There is no comparison to Polaris class or any other class by US carrier none whatsoever just look at your very own video
@@InFltSvcI'm not comparing US carriers with Cathay Pacific, i'm just saying that US carriers (especially United) are improving their products.
@@InFltSvc Apparently UA recently stopped plating their Polaris meals restaurant style and has gone back to their old casserole dishes.
yvr2002rtw that’s what I am saying ... same old save a buck US carriers
Business catering on CX is always a joke
As long as First Class exists on CX, their Business Class will never improve!
Nothing special as compare long haul first class

Another of those flight review videos where 50% of the video is taken by GoPro looking out the window. Hardly creative or informative content
Hello Mike, I want to target people who want to see the inflight service and people who are plane geeks (like me). I hope you understand.
@@CloudNine1 I appreciate the reply. I do understand as I'm one of those geeks. I'm traveling Business on a United 787-9 next month and wanted to check out the inflight service, which you don't see looking out the window. It's like I had to continually fast forward to get to the interesting things. Thanks anyway for putting the video up and replying
Whenever I fly first class, or business class.. I dress appropriately. The amount of people who dress like slobs is getting out of hand. The flight crew treats you better when you show respect to them by dressing accordingly.
Hell, even when I fly coach I am still better dressed than most people who fly business and first.
I am glad I flew first class with Cathay to Australia. The lounges alone made the trip so much more enjoyable.
Money doesn't buy class at all. People show all the time how low end they really are.
Richard Johnson, I understand what you mean, I always switch into more comfortable clothing after takeoff. I don’t like to wear jeans on a 16 hour flight.
The family boarding in front of you was a prime example. They weren't really bad, but even for business class they were underdressed. That was the nice thing with first class.. I really didn't run into any slobs and they kept the first class passengers away from the rest of the passengers pretty well.
Richard Johnson the family boarding before me flew economy class.
@Richard Johnson, that's a very condescending comment about people who you know nothing about to call them slobs. I travel quite extensively by air and i dress appropriate to the climate and length of the flight. By your definition that makes me a slob and not worthy of sitting towards the front of the plane? I found in my very humble 'slob' travel experience that my top tier standing in my airlines loyalty program garners me more respect from the airline staff than the type of trousers and loafers i'm wearing. Also, dressing smart does not show respect to the flight crew. Getting out of your seat and engaging with them, being sociable, treating them with the respect they deserve goes a lot further than a pair of trousers ever will.
If you fly.. You know exactly how big of slobs people are on planes. Being part of loyalty program? Who gives a shit? That is your biggest issue.. You think you are "special". Entitlement is most likely the culprit with what is wrong with the slobs that travel. They have a sense of entitlement.
You are offended by being called a slob? Quit being a slob then. It seems you are above any sort of dress code because you are a loyalty member. Do you know how many times I have heard that used by someone who has their head up their ass and they feel they are above the other passengers because they are a certain level and that without them the airline would be ruined? All the time. Get the hell over yourself, you aren't important at all.
You lumped yourself onto the slob comment. Maybe you are? maybe you aren't? If it doesn't bother you when you see slobs on a plane and you don't realize that society is going down hill everyday.. Great.
