In this special episode of The Music is Win Podcast, I talk to Periphery guitarist and Horizon Devices founder Misha Mansoor. If you're interested in turning music into a career, this podcast is required listening. Misha's unique insights as both a member of a big time band and an entrepreneur in the music industry provide clarity on just what it takes to find success in the current landscape of 2018. There are plenty of actionable tips that you can take away from our conversation, as well as advice on how to become a great guitarist while preparing for the fact that it will probably take more than just having sick skills on the instrument to forge your career.
This was awesome!
Why not write the description in the description?
I would assume because he can pin it to the top of the comments section so that way as soon as anyone scrolls down they can get the description without having to click "show more" under the video...Why would it matter where he puts it you dumpster?
My favorite line from this: Gear is a disease I don't want a cure for. Love it.
Misha just seems so genuine. It's refreshing.
great deal of underground artists seem more genuine, for more obvious reasons.
When misha says it's tough to break into an industry you KNOW it's tough
At the 30:00 mark, Misha nailed it on the head. Merch is a great seller, but Periphery are a gear band. Look at most bands, and they all have say, an Ibanez deal, so all guitarists play Ibanez. But with Periphery, they have Ibanez, Jackson, PRS, then Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio and Bare Knuckle pickups. Not to mention Nolly and his Dingwalls, and Misha/Matt/Nolly having GetGood Drums and Misha with Horizon. Each guitarist have their own, multi-brand deals, and that's damned smart.
And like others have said, Misha is SUCH a chill dude. Met him numerous times, and he's always been down to earth and a great dude.
his body
Fraser Morrison HAHA😂
doesnt he have a v-Neck shirt shop or something?
His voice.
Misha is super smart, you can't shit on him for building a career AROUND music, FOR his music career.
Misha has a really good mic
really dynamic,a bit too close of it though
Actually there isn't much dynamic at all in there, his voice is veeery compressed. Could instantly host a generic radio show with that setup.
It’s for his incredible vocals on songs like i lost my lunch in my pants and periphery beta
it's just the mixing, the hosts mic sounds raw
you should get Yvette Young to come on! she's done a couple podcasts lately
I love this guy, he’s so down to earth and real. It’s refreshing.
At 17:50 Misha says "the best guitarist, that's not even a thing" I can't agree more! There is always someone somewhere that is better and players keep getting better all the time!! Great vid!!
This was my first time ever hearing or seeing Misha, and I must say, I am very grateful for it. Periphery are now one of my favorite bands, and Mr. Bulb has very quickly become an idol of mine. His workflow and ability to write such complex and nuanced music without even knowing music theory, (at least, not in a traditional way), has motivated me so much. He's so down to earth, his riffs are fire, and his chemistry and ability to write so well with Mark and Jake is greatly inspiring to me.
I aspire to be like Misha Mansoor one day.
Bulb is love, Bulb is life.
Misha speaking the truth as he does.
This is honestly the most accurate and beneficial conversation regarding the music biz from a song writer's perspective I've heard in some time. I've shared the same thoughts with a few people and couldn't agree more. Thank you for posting. \m/
Misha should compose music for the FF7 remake.
I see misha. I click.
Loving the podcasts Misha's done recently. Thanks for that one!
Best podcast you’ve done so far! Really interesting conversation and very helpful for any aspiring musician.
When you realize that Tyler is also a Businessman Undercover 🤔🤑
Love you both from Pakistan.
Misha is my man of the hour!
I bought a horizon device and it makes me a happy guitar player !
Hi, my name is Stefan and... I'm a guitar buying addict.
Guitar buying addiction is a serious condition... I just... It's hard man... I just can't stop. If i don't get a new guitar every few months i get depressed. Once you start you cant stop. All of you who feel the same way like i do i want you to know that you are not alone... I know how it feels when you need that strat, when you have to have a red telecaster, when one les paul isn't enough... *sobbing (imagine it)*
I bought a classical acoustic cause i know i'll need that cutaway after few days...
To all people who feel the same.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!
New periphery album!!! Yippiiieeee.
30:35 - Billy Howerdel, A Perfect Circle, was a guitar tech for NIN
Brilliant interview. Learned so much here and I'm incredibly thankful for this! Thank you!
This is fantastic. Thanks Tyler and Misha!
Dude, very cool. Hope you can get more of these!
Yeah, unfortunately any person with general wisdom about the music industry knows that the days of making money off of an album have long since past; Unless, of course, you’re an enormous name in the industry (practically A-List). You have to be smart about your gameplan if you wanna make it in music. You have to have a business model that works and a lot of the conventional avenues have died. Music school for instance is sparcely going to land you a free ticket into big time music production. You’ll get internships and assistant positions but there is very little money left like there was in, say, the 70s. It’s a bygone time but still you can make it. Just be social and master the game of getting known. If you exist on the radar people will see the things you’re doing. That’s the first secret to success.
Overall I’m not too familiar with Misha’s overall work but with I do know of it he gets my up most respect as a musician and knowledge of what he wants.....
Misha is win and so is this channel
The best content I have ever watched
Best Podcast Episode/Interview with Misha I've ever seen
Learned so much!
When they were talking about the merch guys... I think about Billy.... such a genuine guy.... Stas is amazing too, he has so many hats on when hes on tour..!! love both of them... so much...
It's funny, I know Misha doesn't think of himself as a great guitarist, but one of my favorite solos to play/cover is his solo from Have A Blast off of Periphery II
I really enjoy Luck As Constant too, both parts are amazing
Ilian Petit Indeed! Good stuff!
Isnt that a Guthrie Govan guest solo?
Oh the person I wanted most to see on your channel
Fantastic episode man. I've been dying and drooling to get my hands on a precision drive. Its just out of reach for me $$-wise. I guess every guitar player can have a dream.
Brad Hargis I have one for sale
Hey Tyler, I’m loving these type of podcasts, I demand more! 😃
Love it! Tanks Notification!
Studio I used when I was in bands had an external drive that auto saved everything every 5 minutes. Thank god because the power went out one night and a full 8 hour session was lost on the main drive but was backed up!
This is an amazing video! Very informative!
Great video you two! I'd like to embellish a bit about the part of being cool. That may have different meanings to different people. In my opinion, being cool means; Be a positive minded person that people want to be around. Focus on what can be done, instead of what can't! Be someone that people can count on and even confide in. Be dependable. Be on time and do what you say you're going to do. Follow through! Be a great a communicator! Be thoughtful and deliberate in all you do!
In Premiere Pro & Studio One, I always go into settings and set autosave to like 3 minutes, with a max of 6-10.... it has saved me more than once, that's for sure. That way you just set it and forget it and if something happens you only lose up to the last couple of minutes...
This is the best interview ever, I like every single bit of advice that has been said. I'm the go getter!
Hahahaha Tyler you sound a bit nervous
misha has the sweetest smile
One of the best so far. Very engaging and eye opening. Thanks. What’s your favorite Asheville beer?
Two legends thank you Tyler for this!!
This was awesome! Got to learn so much.
I totally understand Misha's mindset of being more a composer than a guitarist. He has melodies & ideas in his head, and guitar is just one tool for him to quickly express them. Like Jake, he also writes amazing electronic parts.
That was awesome, great podcast bro. And you're right, when he said " have fun" I felt very warm and fuzzy inside :D
This is COOL!! Loved it!
Awesome podcast! Lots to learn from this dude.
Great podcast Tyler, than you very much for this.
As appears in the video, this kind of stuff can’t be teached but definitely they are facts that most of the people ignore, including myself. I appreciate you and Misha for sharing your experience and your point of view on the business and how to build a career in music, you’re awesome Tyler. Also Misha. Keep melting faces 🎸
Nothing good happens without the hard yards.
On networking, it's also really important to be nice to people below you on the food-chain too, on principle, but also because you never know who knows who.
OMG that guy was involved in halo 2 anniversary soundtrack
Come on youtube... 2x advertisements before the video, a window pops up (another advertisement) and at the right of the screen there's another advertisement.
Great advice Misha. Thanks!
14:51 so thats where blood eagle came from :D
Musicians, and artists in general, should take a page out of the software development book and learn about version control systems for tracking changes. I think some people recommend Mercurial for large binary files. It could probably just be done in Git for small-ish projects.
Misha is such a cool and humble, dude.
Fucking great... Absolutely love this podcast .. first one I see all the way through sadly and happily at the same time 😂
A Misha podcast would be so dope.
This is a must see podcast.
why is misha mansoor my favorite
Would love to see you appear on the new Periphery record. Cameo solo!
Sounds sincere! Thanks.
Awesome interview, thanks, really appreciate it. The ending is quite funny, when both of you admit having too much stuff (tone in the fingers), and behind both of you are the piles of amps and pedals, and gear... LOL... :-)))
nice interviewthanks at both of you !:)
Freakin fantastic interview!
Great video!!
Isha Isha!
habits of marty friedman or something like that
Thank you for this very informative video
''I'm not the most technically proficient guitarist..." makes video playthrough on one of the most difficult tracks of an album
Misha understates his musical and entrepreneurial genius so much
god that video quality is taaaasty
45:33 do you mean... "Have a Blast?"
Next time, a musician dressed as a businessman :p
Would you still use the Precision Drive for an amp modeler like an Axe FX to get the "tightness"?
Awesome show, very informative. Quick question what is that green light in the background looks awesome :)
Misha Mansoor, a Busnician Disguised as a Musicman

Awesome!
When i was in my early 20s, I toured shit venues with shit bands and had a great time. If I had heard this video before I would have gone the merch guy/guitar tech route. Such a genius idea for a young guy/gal to go after. Seriously, do this if you want to get on the road.
I need to know what the sample pad thingy with the wonderful kaleidoscope of lights behind you is.
K -Ray same I'd like a link to buy one!
HOW DID I MISS THIS UPLOAD!? :(
music is win? more like music get 50% off on guitar super system level 2 is win
Awesome video man! You should consider getting tim from polyphia on!
When misha doesn't think he's a good guitar player 😂😂😂😂😂 i actually see him as much better than most guitarists for having a unique style
hey dude. can you make a video about Andy Timmons, i'd really love to see what magic he does to make every single solo he plays sound EPIC. ps: i love your videos
Misha Mandoor 😍😍😍
god misha giving advice sounds like my dad, give me the answers I want to hear, not the ones I need >:^( /s
Misha NAILED the explanation about how most people in the music industry have a proactive approach. I also think this is why we see so many muscians succeed in music and also business ventures. It really does all start from an approach that is derived from a mindset. Everyone I come across seems to want a technical explanation on how to become successful in music, when really it is overarching, macro principles. I have seen this time and time again with friends that are successful in the music industry and people who are also successful in other industries. Train the mind first!
You should do an updated gear rundown
Hi Misha
Hey
Whaaaattt?!?!? How did you get in touch with Misha?!?!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I got that same Dual Rectifier
