Perfect 4th - Smells Like Teen Spirit verse riff, over and over and over!
And love me tender. On the "love-me"
I'v struggled with intervals for a while, this is ground breaking. I feel confident now
I still don’t get it
@@tylergrey7744 what do you not get? What an interval is or how to hear them
The more I dive into theory the more I realize I have no idea what I’m playing
Same man how are new u are I been playing for 6 months nw
@@tylergrey7744 6 months in too, go do a city college class on fundementals. changes everything for the better
@@Hedonkeviik I really don’t want to lmao 🙄 teach me some stuff I got questions bout things
If it sounds good, it doesnt matter, for example, no good song stays in key 100% of the time.
Bruh! You find out about that circle of fifths yet?
Did you know thats a thing!?
That shit blew my mmind . I still suck though. Lol
What did you pick first, the shirt or the guitar? Either way good choice
The shirt, but picking up the guitar actually happened on accident-thanks for noticing the aesthetic win
What about PRS signed guitar giveaway?
PEPSI MAN its done dude. It was given away
Nick Pol But didn't announced anything. I was even checking website everyday.
PEPSI MAN I know he announced it on instagram idk
My interval memorizations:
minor 2nd: jaws
major 2nd: do re mi song
minor 3rd: seven nation army
major 3rd: harry potter theme
perfect 4th: bride coming in
triton: the Simpsons theme
perfect 5th: power chord/all of me (John Legend) intro
minor 6th: We are young (Fun.)
major 6th: blues lick
minor 7th: the winner takes it all
major 7th: take on me
might be handy to use those too.
YYZ by Rush is a good tritone to remember too at the beginning
I use Harry Potter theme for perfect 4th
9:52 this man thinks people that don’t know intervals play in lydian on the regular
I just remember the tritone as the Simpson's theme haha.
Wtf is that
Also, for us who are very old, the first two notes of "Maria" from West Side Story.
Seriously the best video on intervals, learning by ear has been the bean of my existence, love the descriptiveness of the intervals and video references, impossible to forget....please more videos like this to learn songs by ear....
Does anyone else think this is the most helpful video ever made? Literally the most satisfying and helpful movie I have ever watched. Thank you MIW
I hate it when people dislike videos like this, keep it up bro, you’re a huge inspiration to me👍🏻
Thanks a lot tyler this lesson has opened my eyes a little more. I really appreciate the time and effort put in and look forward to learning more thru your Guitar super system shortly. Thank you!
Love this down-to-earth approach to intervals. Ur seriously a genius!
I see that this lesson is more useful and interesting than my math's right now
got caught, anyways sacrifice worth it
It surely is thanks
Coffee is a drug like marijuana actually it’s probably the least practical
Music is maths.
@@we_are_nevertheless7305 it's your problem if you don't like maths. But I enjoy it allot.
This video was extremely helpful. I've long struggled with ear training but I actually recognized the major 3rd between the B and G strings.
For minor sixth, there is an old song called Love Story writen by Francis Lai, this is from the film called also Love Story starred by Ryan O´Neal and Ali MacGrow, this is from the 70´s
And for major sixth, Two of Us from The Beatles.
I remember another one for sixth minor interval, it's the intro of the song True Colors singed by Cindy Lauper.
John Mayer - Slow Dancing in a Burning Room
Yes, this is a good example for a minor 6th note starting the melody and drops down in Love Story..👍🎶🎸
Is this the song immortal technique used for that one song?
Vangelis 1492 theme :)
Love this style of mnemonics, once you grasp this it will stay with you forever... thanks for an awesome lesson
Very Interesting. I learned these thru time and with experience. And you did a great job explaining a few ways i learned! I thumbs up this one!!
This video might be the most helpful/useful music theory video I've ever seen. Brilliant way to teach this, thank you!
Love this video! Have seen others like this but this one will stick with me for sure
Minor 6 - ‘The Entertainer’. Everyone knows that track and it’s really memorable.
Edit - it’s played in the main melody multiple times, and every time it is done so three times in a row. It really is the perfect example of the minor 6 interval.
I know it's been a minute, but thanks for this, James! This is perfect!
For major 6 Chopin Eb Nocturne works well
I Forgot all about this lesson. It was refreshing retaining the information but I cannot help but laugh. I appreciate your energy throughout your channel. I’m happy to have access to this much information especially being a student in the Udemy lectures. I have full access to a archive basically.
Keep shredding man ✊🏾
Thanks Tyler for this amazing helpful lesson.
Tyler, GRAZIE!!
I was struggling to figure out a method that could help me studying intervals, and suddenly your video appeared, and boy oh boy it's PERFECT :D
Thank you very very much Tyler!
Greetings from Italy
It's cool to have something "tangible" to compare sounds to! This will definitely help my ear training. Thx
This is a great way to understand these things wish i found this a month or two ago when i first read about how intervals work would have really helped me get it faster
Another great video Tyler. You break things down and explain them in terms that make sense. Great examples to remember the intervals. By the way, small error at 9:40...the #4 note on the Black Sabbath riff was shown as the 2nd note (octave) instead of the third note. That song is still my favorite Sabbath song of all time. That song gave birth to heavy metal IMO.
Great examples. Fun and educative at the same time, sounds like the perfect lesson to me...
Wow. Different approach. I like it. Thanks!
Thanks Tyler. Much much needed video !!!
Thank you for existing
Wow. What a great way to teach intervals. Thanks.
What a Great Video. Practical learning combined with sense of humor. Awesome
This is an extremely good, and useful lesson.. Thank you.
In the middle of watching a video about intervals an ad comes in to tell me not to practice interval exercises 😬
Yeah me too like wtf
Amazing! I'm loving this video 👏🏻
I appreciate your video very much! Your a great teacher bro! Thank you!
This is a fantastic video...I mean, like, fantastic above the usual quality of these
You're slowly becoming my favorite youtuber 👍
Thank you. Great video for anyone.
I was waiting for the interval but you didn't take a single break throughout the whole video!
Great as always bruv. I love these.
Thanks man this helps so much..... time to build and rebuild my guitar playing skills.
Very helpful! Thanks.
You're totally right this is the best way to learn riffs by ear, when you were playing that minor 2nd I immediately realised that was the interval used in the super dissonant solo/interlude bit from stinkfist and i was able to just figure out by ear from that point. Maybe that assocition will help someone else memorize that, really useful for me
Minor 6th. " When the light go down in the city." Journey. Nice tutorial. Thank you.
You make learning fun and easy mate!
Needed this for harmony thanks
What a champ! thanks for a great lesson
Minor 6th was one of the easiest intervals for me to memorise. Just get familiar with the classic piano tune "the entertainer", and there you have it, minor 6th!
MarsLos10 Ah yes. Between the E and C.
Lady gagas song bad romance uses this in the ra ra part
That's an inverted major third though.
@@smorrow yeah and here comes the bride is the 5-1, not a 1-4, but no one listens to guys like us
@@smorrow also the "nya-nya" song is just an excerpt of "ring around the rosies" and the interval is 5-3, not b3-1.
Great Lesson Tyler!
O man THIS is the video I've been waiting for... thanks Tyler \M/
Damn! You are a genius! Because of this video, I bough the course. Well played, well played...
Great lesson!
Keep going with these theory videos !!! Great !
The Black Sabbath clip was wrong, it shows the #4 when Iommi is playing the octave.
Yeah that's a #4 flat 5 in the sabbath riff. They are also tuned down a couple semitones. The tune is R, Octave, #4.

1:40 Octave (12)

Inverse of Major 3rd - Minor 6th (8)
Nice video! It was kind of a refresher for me, but it also helped to find a couple better songs to help remind me of the intervals; many of the songs were the same! Perfect 5th was 2001: Space Odyssey when I learned a song to associate.
Thank you so much for this video it’s helped me tremendously
Really good info
Thanks!
6maj - Since I've been loving you (Zep), 6min & 5 - Iron man (Sabbath), 4 - Outta get me (GnR), 7min - every Quo song! Also No quarter (Zep), 7maj - Under the bridge (Peppers). The 6min tends to be part of playing a 5th, then dropping the root note down one, plenty of examples of that! Zep and Rush were particularly brilliant with their sprinkling of intervals in songs.
Man, I can't thank you enough. Right after this video I could recreate my first riff (Pendulum - Witchcraft) Thanks
Minor 6th is very heavily used in a lot of goth, doom, and other dark music, it's really great for getting quite a gloomy, miserable sound, so there are tons of examples in that field. One particular example - and I know it's not a famous song by any stretch - is Kneel Til Doomsday by My Dying Bride, which starts off with that interval. I also find that minor 6ths often sound like they *really* want to resolve to the fifth - in the same way that 7ths want to resolve to the root - so if you're feeling a pull like the higher notes wants to come down, that's often a sign that it's a minor 6th.
The other thing is that the inverse of a minor 6th is a major 3rd, and vice verse. So E up to C is a minor 6th, but C up to E is a major 3rd. So if you're not sure what it is, you could sing the first note an octave higher and try the doorbell sound over the top, and if that works then it's likely it's a minor 6th. Similarly if you try the 'ner-ner-you-can't-catch-me' thing over it and it fits, then it's probably a major 6th.
Wonderful stuff ... thanks
My favorite interval is between Ab and G#. Primo! 👌🏻
Dave Rucci diminished 2nds are awesome
The Mclesc they are to die for. 😵
Lol
Dave Rucci some random guy would comment and say it us the same as blablabla then you don't know theory😂😂 I hate those people.
Lol
Thank you so much
Damn another great video
Thanks!
Your welcome!
yep
This is awesome! Thanks a lot!
I need this!!!
I always love your videos......
This is the one that earned you my sub 👍
Freaking genius
It really helps to navigate the KB if we know first of all that strings EADG are separated by fourths, [E abc D] , but also D's relation to the string underneath is a fifth [ D efga B ]
minor 6th...what about ....slow dancing in a burning room? :D
Benny94ful exactly what I thought!
also the rains of castamere from GoT!
Michał Górecki me too
John mayer's song?...it goes from m3 to M3

Very fun to play.. Thanks easy way to learn intervals
This was so helpful! Minor 6th - Journey's "Lights" right at the beginning. If anyone mentioned this previously, sorry.
Very nice !!!
Amazing video, dude. I was extremely educated by this ^^
Now that's a real helpful vid
I recognise the minor 6th as The Rains of Castamere. Something for the GoT fans :)
Yes!! I sing that melody almost everyday. Good ear!
THANK YOU
I dont have music class i only watch your videos thanks!
For the 5th i thought you were going to play The Top gun anthem....✈️🎸
I love the shimmer on the Reverb.
The minor sixth is also the augmented fifth. That is the sound of the British siren. I also refer to it as "The Grackle's Flourish." If you don't know what a grackle is, Wikipedia has a good article about them. Songs that showcase that interval include Hendrix' "Purple Haze," Buckethead's "Bloody Head Stump," and The Velvet Underground's "Black Angel's Death Song."

Minor 6th. Opening two notes of Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life. The Hartman Coltrane rendition really beautiful
Minor sixth is interval between first and last note of first inversion major triad. This is used at start of melody of old war time tune - "There'll be blue birds over the White Cliffs of Dover". Obscure, particularly for Americans, but it works for me.
I like to think of the minor 6th as "two random notes."
This is actually very useful.
I familiarize minor 6th by imagining the first inversion of a major triad.
Like the low E to high C as demonstrated towards the end.
I mess with it all the time when I do rhythm for a song in vi-IV-I-V, e.g. E-C, F-C, G-C, G-D.
For minor 6th intervals, I like to think of the Entertainer by Scott Joplin.
Minor 6th - John Mayer’s slow dancing in a burning room on continuum album.
For minor 6th, I usually use The Entertainer, or Fun - We Are Young (When he sings: Fire)
Cool.... Thanks for this video
Can't believe that the doorbell thing worked, once in my head, I instantly recognised the interval between G and B...top tip!
Minor 6th: the two first notes from "Stream of Consciousness" by Dream Theater
Also, "Yeah" by Usher. The first interval is a perfect fifth but the second interval is a minor 6th.
My friend remembers the minor 6th from the generic Iron Maiden progression that goes like Em-C-D-Em, and the Em-C root movement is a minor 6th (well, it could also be seen as a descending major third, but if you think in scale degrees and E is the tonic, then C is the minor 6th scale degree).
the Usher's one does the trick perfectly for me. Thanks!
Great thx
Nice one.
I always think of tritones (Aug 4th,dim 5th) as rush yyz.
I honestly think the tritone is the easiest to remember because nothing sounds anything like it. It's a very distinct dissonant tone, very easy to remember.
Andrew Gallagher my sentiments exactly. YYZ
Purple haze intro is also mega iconic as I believe jimi is playing E and bass is playing Bb thus making it a tritone
Minor 6: theme from Black Orpheus.
That's in a minor chord (5 up to min3), but it also exists in a major chord (3 up to root).
I remember minor 6th ascending by the first two sax notes in Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. Descending minor 6th is the D to F# in the Crazy Train guitar riff.
Also a perfect 4th you hear after the end of a main riff in Nirvana - smells like teen spirit
