as someone who was lined up to get internships in my last two years of college but plans fell through due to covid, it's been very difficult to find footing in the graphic design industry. it's been several years since graduation and i feel lost, especially when i live 1+ hours from any bigger town. i'll be trying these tips and tips from other videos and articles, thank you for making this.
@glennsbian I'm so sorry for the hardship you are going through, not a lot of people talk about how hard it is to get through the hiring process and the challenges designers go through to get a job. I hope some of these methods helped. I find the most odd methods the ones work best for me in the past. Thanks for watching and your support. Sending positive energy your way.
Can relate with the "I graduated college with zero experience and zero internships thing", definitely a big no no for anyone who wants to get into design. You gave some insightful info but do I wish you went into more detail with how YOU got a job, like what were the specifics? What exactly did your portfolio look like? How many projects were on it? Did you get a job by randomly applying online, or did someone specifically reach out to you? How long did it take for you to actually land a real design job? Was it full time? I was in the same boat as you when I graduated, I didn't do any internships and had zero experience, but I managed to land a freelancing role with a startup company a year after I graduated. recently my hours have been very low so I'm looking for other tips and tricks on how to land a new role, since having a year worth of professional experience still isn't enough for people lol.
wow! these are great questions that I'll keep in mind for my next videos. I often worry I put too much "talking" and have an issue with cutting things short. However to answer your questions, How I got the job and what my portfolio looked like at the time was very bare, I had a couple of College projects that involved "an Album cover, two poster designs, and a brochure" I would not recommend apply with the bare minimum like I did so I attached my portfolio link in the description if you'd like to check it out. 😃 As for applying for a job, I have a tendency to apply "randomly" but there are key words that trigger me to click when I see "Real Estate - Medical - University - Nonprofit" those tend to catch my eyes more when applying for a graphic design position. I will make another video about this but it took me somewhat a year until I got my fulltime gig, and it was with a signshop/apparel company. Where I got to expand on different design platforms! I'd suggest to take this time and explore different graphic design jobs, even if you feel you arent fully qualified. We tend to pick things up really fast when you are in the storm itself! I'm wishing you the best with finding the right fit. I can promise it gets easier every year. 💗
@@LittleFlame93 Thanks for the response! I have a couple of decent projects on my portfolio and a decent resume. I've applied to different types of jobs over the last few years, I've gotten a few interviews here and there but never really made it past the final round. So I'd definitely love to hear more about what you did to get your role!
i did an internship and worked as a working student for three years during my studies. i finished my bachelors in summer 2023 with the highest possible grade and i've been unemplyed ever since. i can not find a job for the life of me. might need to start going into places...
it’s frustrating to feel stuck, especially after finishing up your bachelors. Job searching can definitely be challenging, even with a strong background. Visiting companies in person or seeking advice from mentors might open up new opportunities. Don't lose hope-you’ve already done so much to set yourself up for success. I can promise you it gets easier with time, its those first phases that take time.
Hiii, new subbie here ! 🥰🙌🏾 And first off let me just say that this video was suppperrrrr refreshing to watch !! 😩🙌🏾 I actually have thought about sharing my journey or more so “how I started” on my RUclips channel too. Thanks for sharing such relatable content.
🥰 Welcome to the channel, and thank you so much for your kind words! It truly means the world to hear that you found the video refreshing 😩. If you’re thinking about sharing your journey, I say go for it! Your story could inspire so many people. Sending you lots of positive vibes as you start creating.
That's fantastic! Your experience with three internships must have given you a solid foundation in digital media.😃Wishing you the best with your freelance journey!
Sorry to hear you had trouble finding design work in Seattle. It can definitely be a tough market. Regarding alternative routes, have you thought about reaching out to local print shops or small businesses? Sometimes they need design work but don’t have the time to hire. Freelancing on the side could help you build a portfolio and get your foot back in the door!
of course, I went to Oregon State University and studied for 4 years. But I mostly benefited from just the last two years. The other two years were classes like traditional art, printmaking, science classes etc...
You can get a job without a degree. I would urge you to gain direct experience by working with small local stores, especially those with lower prices, to build a client base and learn different skills, such as designing brochures and flyers or setting up their social media pages. Jumping straight into hands-on work can be a great way to avoid pursuing a formal degree.
Random Question: If animals could talk, which species would be the rudest?🐬
Monkeys & Kangaroos 100%
@@SonUsagi Monkeys for sure🤣
Monkeys fr
Humans can already talk, I find them plenty rude enough. No need to add more species to this list.😮🎉
@@SonUsagikangaroos was what came to my mind lolllll
