  • For generations, the biblical character Judas Iscariot has been framed as the incarnation of evil - a figure who has been universally detested amongst believers. Judas’ reputation as a betrayer has cemented him in the minds of many as one of the worst people to have ever existed (or to have ever been created in literature). In Dante’s Inferno for example, Judas even has his own special place in the third lowest circle of hell, where he is placed head first into the maw of Satan, with his back continuously skinned by the devil’s claws. Ironically, this isn’t the only time Judas and Satan get this close, for it is in the bible we see Judas condemned by all four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and explicitly mentioned as the one who betrayed Jesus and the one who sold him out. Some are even convinced that Judas was so wicked in these acts, that he must’ve been working in tandem with Satan.

    The Gospel of Judas is a non-canonical Gnostic gospel. The content consists of conversations between Jesus and Judas Iscariot. I like the creation story of this gospel much more than that of Genesis. Not only is it more (spiritually) fleshed-out, but it also puts the Tree of Knowledge into proper context. It was a test by the one true god to see whether they would blindly follow or knowingly follow.
    If they blindly followed, then they may have been succeptable to the other false gods (as they were shown to be to the serpent). Only through doubt and reason could they decern which among them was the one true god.

      @@LearningWithMatthewThat's a cop out. If God didn't want it to happen, it wouldn't have. Besides, if the devil entered Judas, then the devil betrayed Jesus; not Judas. Either way, the free will angle doesn't hold water. Either God let it happen, in accordance with his plan, or the devil did it.

    • @wallisvictor9688
      @wallisvictor9688 9 месяцев назад +7

      Let go of the idea of free will; babies have it and make mistakes. Why did God place us here to be tested in an imperfect world, knowing most would falter? Debating free will is exhausting when even God possesses it. He knowingly created the Devil in the name of free will, just as He made Adam and Eve, anticipating their failure. God allowed the Devil into Eden, left it defenseless, and then acted surprised by their downfall, punishing not only them but future generations. Even the creation of the Leviathan seems to serve as a display of His power. God's omnipotence is undeniable, but why create when you already know the outcome and react emotionally?
      The events surrounding Jesus's death, planned and scheduled for His return in three days, can be perplexing. On the cross, God displayed anger, darkening the sky and raising the dead. Yet, the same outrage doesn't manifest when innocent children perish. God, like us, possesses free will but with extraordinary powers, choosing to create beings with known good and bad outcomes. We didn't create our existence or souls-God did, and He can take them away. Good and evil exist within God, as He created all things. He allowed the Devil to live when He could easily destroy or never create him. This is why I get frustrated when people attempt to justify His actions and those of evil-doers, given that He engineered them.
      If I had the power to create and knew someone would become evil, I wouldn't create or place them in a world full of sin only to condemn them to hell-it's senseless. I'd rather create obedient beings like robots, rather than grant free will, why will I create a being hoping they choose to follow me and if they don't u toss them into eternal damnation, knowing their limited knowledge and average lives, seems incomprehensible. Sending someone to eternity just because they didn't believe in me raises the question of why I created them when I already saw their entire existence. If I know what they'll do, why hold onto hope for change when I'm a God? These are questions we should be asking instead of clinging to blind faith, and degrading those who seek logic. 🤔

    Just my opinion, but if Jesus was sent as the ultimate sacrifice to cleanse humanity of original sin, the more obvious sin of judas was the shame and lack of repentance to Jesus on the cross out of fear from the backlash of the others who were at the cross. This seems to be more of an issue than a betrayal, which seemed more like a necessary evil. At the same time, judas's response to his realization of what he had done in his portrayal could be viewed as more of a sobering moment of him realizing that even one of the twelve apostles could be a host of Satan/ Lucifer. Similar to how a drunk sobering up realizes what they did the morning after.

    The crazy thing is some years after the whole Code Davinci and Wild theory online, I came up with a theory myself similar to this like:
    Jesus had 12 disciples and everyone knew who the traitor was gonna be and nobody stopped him... so I started to think what if Judas was not the Betrayer but the only one who tried to save Jesus or was against the plan, and all the others or at least a majority got cold feet and betrayed Jesus and Made Judas the scapegoat, bc how come all of those barely alphabetic ppl (most of the Disciples only new basic math and common language and couldn't write.) manage to create/write those gospels so eloquently after Jesus Death? not only that why they didn't get pursued and killed too? The Romans wouldn't just kill Jesus' they would kill the closest ones to Jesus too bc that how they dealt with insurgents and the likes at the time...
    And Based in human history so far... is more plausible that Judas was no the only one who betrayed or was him at all!!

    It's been decades since my studies, but as I recall, the English translators of the Greek word 'paradidomai' chose 'betray' rather than 'deliver' or 'hand over'/'give over', which DOES present a very different connotation to Jesus's words in the Last Supper and Judas's 'role' in the 'plot' aspect of the story of the arrest of Jesus. This alternate reading implies the possibility of the 'Passover Plot' proposed by the Wolfenbuttel Fragmentist (Reimarus) in the 1770s, and the book by that name, 'The Passover Plot' by Schonfeld in the 1970s. The plot was to retrieve Jesus from the cross before he died, Joseph of Arimathea (Sanhedrin member, wealthy friend of Pilate) being a key player, as well as Judas, who bore the burden of being perceived as the betrayer, but he was actually just following Jesus's order. Was the plot the 'mystery' of the kingdom?

    • @BooksRebound
      @BooksRebound 7 месяцев назад +1

      Wait WHAT?! Thats fascinating. Given the talk of Judas being replaced, the God seemingly inhabiting Jesus's body at one point telling Judas no hand can touch him (the God possessing Jesus) but that the body bearing the God can be harmed, the foreknowledge of a betrayal, another gospels account of Jesus's doubts and his tears the night prior to the betrayal, and the part saying the future will essentially worship a false version of Jesus, all of that combines to make more sense of the Bible and the resurrection.
      Say Jesus had a twin brother. Jesus is divinely possessed and special and the fulcrum of this prophecy. Judas isn't special. Jesus tells his brother about what needs to happen. They swap places. Jesus survives, Judas is killed and gets venerated but under the wrong name.
      Or Jesus really does die, but Judas fakes the resurrection since they look identical, it works.
      Thanks for the info. That generated so many new questions

    Iscariot tells you who Judas is. The sicarii were rebels, assassins or terrorists of the day. A sicarius is a short, curved knife. It paints the rebellious as traitors to Jesus.
    It loses its meaning in a world where names don’t carry meaning as they did at that time. A modern person reading it would have to understand the context of the name to understand that Judas was already a murderer before obeying Jesus and betraying him to the authorities. Delivering the lamb to be sacrificed was the path of redemption for Judas, set forth by Jesus ordering him to do it.
    This is a particularly heavy book. It has so much that can’t be understood by modern people. Even theologians have trouble interpreting it without an extensive knowledge of history. The unified church couldn’t exist if it had been left in the canonical gospels.

      Wrong etymology. It's a Hebrew demonym meaning: man who comes from Kerioth.
      Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament, was believed by some to be a sicarius.[18][19] This opinion is objected to by modern historians, mainly because Josephus in The War of the Hebrews (2:254-7) mentions the appearance of the Sicarii as a new phenomenon during the procuratorships of Felix (52-60 AD), having no apparent relation with the group called Sicarii by Romans at times of Quirinius.
