Star Saber hasn't really been forgotten, not even in the west. He's gotten a Masterpiece toy and had minor starring roles in various comics over the years, most infamously as a vicious fanatical VILLAIN in the IDW comics. But the Haslab toy will certainly raise his profile even more in the west.
That's the thing... he has a very nice pedigree regarding his design but only a couple of toys here and there and yeah... his role in the IDW comics was very, very controversial haha.
I'm a Japanese who was a kid in the late 70's and 80's. So I can testify. The design of Battle Convoy (Optimus Prime) is definitely influenced by the first Gundam. Not only Battle Convoy, but the main robots of the anime at the time were influenced by Gundam. The impact of Gundam at that time was amazing.
also we have the Brave/Yuusha anime series which features mecha designs by Kunio Okawara which is also animated by Sunrise and the toys being made by the company responsible for Transformers that is Takara which also recycles some of the old G1 Transformers figures for the series, considered by people as being the cousin of the Transformers series
Ngl when I saw the title I thought you gonna delve into the history of the Transformers series, both in West and Japan. Didn't expect you just gushing about the awesome design of it! And yes, would love to see you cover about Macross, probably one of the best long running mecha series after Gundam.
That was my intention at first... but as I said at the start of the vid, I have little to no knowledge of the whole Transformers franchise, so I decided to narrow down the scope to only Star Saber. Maybe in the future I'll talk about all the japanese side of the transformers, all with Ginrai, Lio Convoy and other versions of Optimus.
Both liokaiser and victory saber are my top favorite bots from TF:victory. I build lego TFs and made a lego Liokaiser many years ago. Now working on lego vicsaber .
Not sure whether you've heard of this series before, but Armored Trooper VOTOMs is considered as one of the best real robot animes out there. The mecha in the show are some of the most realistic looking machines out there and they feel like actual tanks with how they move and require maintainence and such. You should check it out if you have the time
Awesome video, man! Makes me appreciate Star Saber's design even more. Hopefully after the success of the Haslab Victory Saber, Hasbro could start putting him in more stuff, like shows and movies.
IMO Flame Toys' rendition of Victory Saber is the most definitive version of the combination itself. He looked a lot more like Gaogaigar in that regard sure, but that's what I'm expecting from it; the lion head on the chest, the sharp claws on the arms and feet, they all add up a new level of beauty on the original itself.
So a neat thing you might be interested in hearing; in the Transformers comics, they actually confront the fact that the robots can randomly change size. It's still a bit hand wavey, but the gist is that the Cybertronians are so advanced, they figured out a device to change their mass when they transform. That way they can better fit in to places they seek to hide/infiltrate
Well done! I also backed the Victory Saber Haslab and am so glad it got funded and all 3 stretch goals were reached. I am too a fan of G1 Transformers, Gundam, ROBOTECH, and the original Vehicle Voltron and Lion Force Voltron. I also love Mighty Orbots, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, and Sym-Bionic Titan. All these shows are worth checking out. Mighty Orbots and Big Guy are on DVD and I got Sym-Bionic Titan on iTunes.
People got confused because most people think Optimus Prime is the leader of all the Autobots, only to have this and other series introduce even higher tier leaders like Fortress and Grand Maximus and then Star Saber as the Supreme Commander who even Optimus has to answer to. All this time it seems Optimus and Megatron were actually commanding small factions of two larger armies. Swords are cool because the TFs are all about saving energy but also fighting hand to hand. Grimlock, Shockwave, Hot Rod, The Junkions and even Megatron as a gladiator were swordsmen.
Optimus Prime is still the supreme commander But by the time of victory, the autobot becomes a intergalactic force rather than ragtag team of rebels and op is dead.
An old mecha show I really like is Space Runaway Ideon. It was the very next show Tomino made after Gundam and It's really good. It does stagnate a bit in the middle but after that it really picks up pace. Even if you don't find the design of ideon to be all that cool (even though it is) The enemy mecha are super out there and rather interesting. It was also one of the main inspirations behind Evangelion and both shows have weird TV endings that were given movies to "fix" them.
Heya, Transformer Fan here. Fun fact, Ginrai was Not Optimus. Sure, the toy was based heavily on the Powermaster Optimus Prime way back when, which when sold over in Japan was modified to incorporate God Bomber, but the character itself was completely different despite having the same body appearance. I'm not gonna go into full details as to why, but they basically tried to rebuild Optimus/Convoy since he had died. But when rebuilding him, the Transector they built was not able to come to life. So they modified it to house a Godmaster and thus Ginrai was born
MHO, Star Saber, Victory Leo looks more like the later series Brave of Legends protagonist Da Garn X & Ga Oh. Where Da Garn transforms from a patrol car, then form Da Garn X's body part (waist), along with Jet forms the upper torso & Bullet train forms the feet, to become Da Garn X. On the other hand, Ga Oh is a warrior transform from a lion, much like Victory Leo, full complement with fire powers. When combine with Da Garn X, Ga Oh forms the both leg part & backpack of Da Garn X (pretty much the same like Victory Leo's combination to form Victory Saber), thus forming Da Garn GX.
All the examples you showed of super robots using a core component came after Star Saber since 2 were from the Brave Series and the other Getter Robo Go all of which were at least 2 years after Transformers Victory
I've been reading a little bit more about combining mechas and it seems that everything originated with Getter Robo... but I'll definitely dig more about it.
@@absa you grabbed Getter Robo Go, the original was 3 components in different orders making different forms like 123 making one form but 231 making another
@@absa Funnily enough, the Brave series was basically Takara's replacement for Transformers during the 90's. A few late G1 toys even got reused for some of the toylines.
@@supercell615 You sure it was really a replacement for Transformers in Japan? There were other lines in Transformers that were still around by the 90s after the TV show ended.
@@osakatales9228 Yeah, at least when it came to the television screen. There's a reason why there were no animations for Return of Convoy, Operation Combination or G2.
Well, I was a HUGE _Transformers_ fan, and was big into _Robotech_ thanks to _Robotech: Battlecry._ But I gotta say, my favorite Mecha series other than _Gundam_ *has* to be _Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann,_ I love it!
While I do like the designs of Staf Saber, Victory Leo, and their combined Jet Mode, I really dislike the combined robot mode... And it is not for any major reason. Giant shoes and a backpack with wings and cannons is standard. It is the lack of ARM upgrades which pisses me off. They look so tiny in combined mode, and the original design SCREAMS that there should be something connecting to those flat surfaces that are all around Victory Saber's hands. The fact that no updated version, third party version, upgrade kit, or even concept art of this being addressed exists, really adds to the irritation.
Star Saber looks a lot like the typical super robot of the early '80s. There are 2 main styles for mechas, the Nagai style, started with Mazinger Z, and the Sunrise style, started with Combattler V. Both Transformers and Gundam beling to the Sunrise style.
Panzer Galient is a real cool "knight mecha" show, predating five star stories. Still need to watch, both the Okawara and Izubuchi designs of the titular mecha are amazing. (they did a thing where theres a OVA version and they change the designs up)
I've never heard about that mecha series but I just watched the op and... it has very, very interesting mechanical designs. Will definitely check out more of this show.
Overall I don't really care for power link type transformations where two distinct characters combine to create a super mode of sorts or a character who's a tiny robot that pilots pseudo extentions of itself that then combines with another character. It's just...too much and often the designs ended up looking derpy and impractical. However I have no issues with traditional combiners or transformers like Overlord who are a combination of two vehicles that make a singular character. I've always liked the design of Star Saber to a certain extent but felt it was a bit much that's why I appreciated when IDW did some much needed streamlining of said design while still capturing the spirit and essence of the original. To me at least.
Aile Strike Gundam and 00 Raiser say hi. Many of the power link combiners don't look bad to me. In Galaxy Force Cybertron, Wing Saber plugs into the back of Optimus Prime in a similar fashion to how 0 Raiser and 00 Gundam combine and I know many Gundam fans like 00 Raiser.
Victory Saber is pretty cool looking, besides a lot of the mechs from the 70s & 80s still hold up pretty well, sure they aren't exactly the most realistic looking but it doesn't have to be, the live action movies of Transformers tried the realistic look but they began to get more and more absurd with their desgins and the film plots also started going the same way, the Bumblebee film is kind of a soft reboot that takes the G1 looks and transforms them into more realistic look yet retaining the classic desgins! A series I would recomend checking out, while kind of mecha, thou more the armoured Hero, is Tekkaman Blade, also known as Teknoman, its a pretty good series with the basic plot of the Earth being invaded but many of Earth's weapons do not work against these invaders yet the invaders plans are a mystery, the story follows a organisation known as the Space Knights who happen to come across a man known only as Blade who can transform into a armoured hero and easily demolish the cannon slaughter of the invaders but the mystery of who he is, how he got his powers and where he from is part of the series plot!

As someone who went to a Transformers custom class at TFcon, screws are actually needed to take Transformers apart for easy mod or repair and reassembly. If I take gunpla apart, I pry at the seams which make a bigger gap in the seam line when I push pieces back together.
It's not "cartoons" it's an animated series... episodes lay plots that are later referenced build up and escalate in dramatic, exaggerated and over the top flair of epic battles and even emotions. Cartoons like Mickey Mouse and bugs bunny are instead explicitly slap stick comedy and other types of comedy where these characters have no continuity at all and as such any animation that follows those no continuity rules, lacks the intellectual writing and just blatantly rely on selling toys or just for laughs, IS a cartoonish cartoon show... Transformers Victory is in every sense of the word a Japanese anime... regardless of the association of the word, anima is another word for soul, anime and animation gives a type of life to fictional characters and stories... even if filler episodes are there and even if toys are there, it's NOT a cartoon... especially when the story dialogue and writing doesn't just turn into some mindless once in an episode and whatever happened there never affects the future eps or previous eps... Otherwise great video... as the Japanese companies created Machine Robo and Diaclone which later, years later Hasbro secured a licensing distribution deal with having Marvel Comics writers (who wrote intellectual dialogue similar to contemporary comic books) and Japanese animation studio, Toei Animation Studios... as a Japanese and American collaborative effort which later Hasbro kinda acted like a bit smug in taking credit or not continuing the storylines. As for killing the characters to sell more toys... usually in Japanese anime once a series ends and has a continuation, a new cast is formed because in animation you have to secure the voice actors to reappear in the new series... such planning is easier said that done when you take into account the progression into Zeta Gundam and how Sayla Mass became a non factor to the story because the story was that the voice actress was working in another series or something so any early designs had to be revised and changed (probably good in terms of Zeta) Also we can kind of see this same issue pop in Dragon Ball anime as it progresses to Dragon Ball Z where the manga has this too but eventually really powerful highly trained mystical warriors like Yamcha, Kuririn, Chaotzu, Tienshinhan and even to an extent Piccolo became far less powerful once the Saiyans arrived and later even less powerful than the Freezer soldiers... remember Kui had more raw battle power which Vegeta had barely surpassed thanks to swallowing his pride and admitting that the Earth bound warriors and low rank Kakarot had learned some valuable skills and techniques which years later were are told that even Freezer himself was just all RAW power... he never really trained... so in the film he actually does train which raised his skills and raw power but was still not refined... never mind that in Dragon Ball Super, despite exhausting his ki energy, Freeza never get a Senzu seed which not only would have fully healed him but given him a zenkai boost and this was done deliberately since we all knew that Perfect Cell was given this which also just made his overall power much more and when he regenerated after Gokus sacrifice, Cell reached a Super Perfect Cell form where he no longer needed the absorbed Cyber humans. Very few Western animated series maintained the structure of being an animated series but due to the U.S.A. nanny state culture those old series were labeled "cartoons" Arguably Gi Joe however is a type of animated series cartoon because of some of the actions done by regular characters like evading bullets/lazers and even hand deflecting a bazooka round.. by hand, bare hands.
There are a lot i know and like also i hope Takara and Hasbro doesn't fuck up on Star Saber when they release the toy like they did with Unicron with how much kibble and unclean transformation look at anything besides DEAD-ON FRONT FACING. It would be a big stain and shame for them with these toys.
Hopefully the final design is cleaner and easier to look at... because right now, in the renders, the back parts are not that clean and with a lot of holes.

As for killing the characters to sell more toys... usually in Japanese anime once a series ends and has a continuation, a new cast is formed because in animation you have to secure the voice actors to reappear in the new series... such planning is easier said that done when you take into account the progression into Zeta Gundam and how Sayla Mass became a non factor to the story because the story was that the voice actress was working in another series or something so any early designs had to be revised and changed (probably good in terms of Zeta)
Also we can kind of see this same issue pop in Dragon Ball anime as it progresses to Dragon Ball Z where the manga has this too but eventually really powerful highly trained mystical warriors like Yamcha, Kuririn, Chaotzu, Tienshinhan and even to an extent Piccolo became far less powerful once the Saiyans arrived and later even less powerful than the Freezer soldiers... remember Kui had more raw battle power which Vegeta had barely surpassed thanks to swallowing his pride and admitting that the Earth bound warriors and low rank Kakarot had learned some valuable skills and techniques which years later were are told that even Freezer himself was just all RAW power... he never really trained... so in the film he actually does train which raised his skills and raw power but was still not refined... never mind that in Dragon Ball Super, despite exhausting his ki energy, Freeza never get a Senzu seed which not only would have fully healed him but given him a zenkai boost and this was done deliberately since we all knew that Perfect Cell was given this which also just made his overall power much more and when he regenerated after Gokus sacrifice, Cell reached a Super Perfect Cell form where he no longer needed the absorbed Cyber humans.
Very few Western animated series maintained the structure of being an animated series but due to the U.S.A. nanny state culture those old series were labeled "cartoons"
Arguably Gi Joe however is a type of animated series cartoon because of some of the actions done by regular characters like evading bullets/lazers and even hand deflecting a bazooka round.. by hand, bare hands.
Note that the Cybertromians are NOT ROBOTS. They are Mechanical Life Forms. Calling them robots is an insult.
Hey! I know you from IMX Media.
Good video, but you need to improve your English pronunciation a little bit more (Pero te entiendo, no se muy sencillo articular las palabras en inglés a un ritmo fluido 😅)
More like voltes V plus transformers
Transformers kills Autobots and decepticon's don't Care Optimus Prime and Megatron No wee need them
Transformers victory should be the start of a anime transformers no mechas just badasses autobots decepticon's and mercenaries who toght transformers are the only ones that don't nee humans inside of there head as mechas
We really need a Transformers series done in the spirit of Gundam.
I detest the direction they took with the likes of Animated and its ugly deformed Power Ranger designs.
12:38 Wow, I’d love to see many DISLIKES this video got after fans heard that 😂
I really want to make a core Gundam set up as Saber and a core armour as the star pack
