Dose of Truth: The hidden health risks of wildfires

The recent wildfires across LA have left more than just physical destruction-they’ve created the potential for long-lasting health risks. Board certified nurse practitioner Dr. James Simmons joined us in studio to share his insight about the potential impact of wildfires on our health, even for those living far from the burn areas.
Dr. Simmons shares some worrisome symptoms to watch for, including irritated eyes, coughing, and fatigue. However, more serious signs like chest tightness, difficulty breathing, or chest pain require immediate medical attention. Children, pregnant individuals, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable due to faster breathing rates and preexisting health conditions.
Dr. Simmons also shared a few ways to help protect yourself, including creating a clean air space at home with HEPA filters, sealing windows, and avoiding outdoor exposure during poor air quality conditions. If you must go outside, wear a properly fitted N95 or KN95 mask and limit physical activity. With these precautions, the risks can be minimized even as the impacts of wildfire smoke linger.
