    Here's the thing, I wish I could buy more ethical clothing. It's just SO expensive and most people can't afford it. WHICH IS WHY this is such a good idea, if I can't always buy ethically at least I can cut down the number of clothes I buy. Thanks Lucy xo

      @yikes268 5 лет назад +17

      But buying second hand is so much cheaper than first hand/fast fashion! You just need to set aside a few hours to spend in your local thrift stores.

    • @qdancer13
      @qdancer13 5 лет назад +7

      thrift stores and clothing swaps are the way to go! also another layer of this is mending/fixing older clothes to make them last longer!

    I love living out of a capsule wardrobe! I recently did a full closet clean out and it feels so nice to just be wearing what I love. Of course there are always those items that I’ve added and then ended up having buyers remorse on, but you live and you learn!

    The lessons you learned were on point! I started *refusing* knitwear that had acrylics in them last year, and only bought materials like wool, cotton and cashmere and they all look brand new still even after wearing and washing them so many times. Knitwear, outerwear and shoes is where i dont mind spending a bit more money on.

    • @ninamarie177
      @ninamarie177 5 лет назад +7

      I feel the same way, I own some acrylic jumpers that are alright after wearing them for 3 years, but compared to natural fabric jumpers that are the same age or older they look horrendous. I must say that I wash all of them by hand or on my washing machine’s wool setting with special detergent, but spending that extra time taking care of them is worth it in the long run.
      Another tip is to always fold knitwear instead of hanging it in the wardrobe to avoid stretching and misshaping it.
      I’ve also noticed that polyester and acrylic make me sweat a lot so I refuse to buy t-shirts or blouses made out of them.

      I‘m not sure if you know them, but if you don’t: check out uniqlo, they have amazing knitwear made from cotton, bamboo, wool etc.

    I used to be really into the idea of building a capsule wardrobe; I would plan out all of the pieces I would want to wear, figure out what combo of clothes to put together...but whenever I went shopping I found I would get distracted and stray from my initial plans. This year, you're inspiring me to pick up the capsule wardrobe and actually commit to it this time. Love your videos Lucy!

  • @JennLovesJacob22

    I really loved this video, I've been trying reduce my fashion footprint but I keep falling back into the routine of thoughtlessly consuming fast fashion. Your lessons have really helped me to target what I'm doing that's actually hindering my progress with reducing my constant need for more clothes. I shop in charity shops mostly and I'll often buy items that I love the thought of but aren't quite right: they don't fit properly, don't actually suit my style or I don't feel comfortable wearing them. However, I'll justify these purchases by saying that they're second hand so my shopping addiction isn't destroying the planet, when really having a wardrobe full of clothes that I don't want to wear is making me buy more from the high street brands that I'm trying to avoid. Thank you for this video because it's made me realise that I need to think less about where I'm buying from and more about what I'm buying. Obviously I don't want to be supporting unethical, unsustainable brands, but this video has helped me realise that there's more to making conscious purchases than just avoiding Zara.

  • @aureen4238
    @aureen4238 5 лет назад +2

    You can still save your jumper! Just buy a fabric shaver, it will only take a few minutes to remove the bubbles and voilá! Your knit will look a lot better!
    I buy inexpensive knitwear but I do take care of them especially when I wash them. Don't put them in the dryer, fold them properly to avoid losing shape. Clothes cost money whether they're expensive or not so please... just try a fabric shaver.

  • @Purplebean18

    You mentioned that you’re expected to wear something different in every video. By whom? Is that really a thing? I’m genuinely curious-who’s keeping track of vloggers outfits, especially ones that aren’t particularly flashy, and then complaining in the comments if they repeat? That just seems to me to be a ridiculous thing to do, but maybe I’m in the minority on that.

    • @byvitaobrien
      @byvitaobrien 5 лет назад +11

      definitely a ridiculous expectation and I don't think many viewers expect it BUT I can understand why creators might feel that pressure just because there's a weird stigma around outfit-repeating in the media (even though most people outfit repeat on the regular!)

    • @SilviaCorvasce
      @SilviaCorvasce 5 лет назад +2

      I have a tiny tiny channel and I feel that pressure too... I don't know where it comes from but if I wear the same thing twice or in close videos I start worrying :c it's nice to read that maybe it shouldn't be a thing :)

    • @melnatalks
      @melnatalks 5 лет назад +15

      I was about to comment the same thing. I think it would be nice and necessary that influencers started wearing the same things often in videos. When ”always wearing something different” you actually add to the mentality of fast fashion and having to get new stuff all the time. Showing that it’s okay to re-wear things would be fab.

    • @rosianna
      @rosianna 5 лет назад +10

      I do this by accident hahahaha. I was looking at my channel and saw I was wearing the same denim dress in three videos in a row. IN FACT I am wearing that denim dress right now. It's a damn good dress.

    Tips for really good boots for feet that just doesn’t work in normal shoes: Tamaris is my favourite brand for shoes that gives nice support yet doesn’t make my wide feet feel like too constricted. As a Swedish person living in a part of my country where it’s basically winter for 9 months, I know the feeling all to well when it comes to the struggle of finding good, practical boots.

I hope that all of us can one day get to stage were we can feel awesome about our bodies but this was a nice reminder that that change can't happen overnight, and that holding onto clothing that makes me feel bad isn't going to help that process. You are a really good looking young girl with a size 10 figure and yet you say you have body dysmorphia and don't like showing your arms or wearing form fitting clothes. Can I make a suggestion?
    If you happen to make another purchase again from a fast fashion store, washing it in a gentle cycle and then letting it air dry helps with it lasting longer! I have a few pieces from H&M or Zara and that helps.
    Also if you like sparkly things maybe add glittery earrings? If you own many monochromatic pieces, glittery earrings will go with almost all of your wardrobe (:

    I created a quasi-capsule wardrobe to take with me as I've moved to Brighton last month from the US. I brought 2 suitcases with me (I wanted to bring a lot of sweaters bc I wear them often and they are my favorite article of clothing but they are bulky so 2 suitcases) and I am finding that most of the stuff I brought I haven't even worn because my washing machine here is sooo much smaller than the one I had back home, so I'm doing laundry more often and just cycling through my preferred outfits much faster. Also I had to bring pretty much everything that I will want for a full year of living here, including stuff that isn't in season. I find when the weather shifts from summer to autumn, I don't dress as femininely and I want to wear very different stuff, so that's another challenge.

    For shoes, have you looked at Fly London? I don't think I can recommend them in terms of ethics (tbh I don't know) but I know that their boots are genuinely the comfiest I've ever worn. I can't wear most heeled boots because of the way my feet are formed, but Fly London fit like a dream! I had the YGOT boots in red for about 2 years and I must have worn them for at least 500 days during that time!

    I have such a big aesthetical conflict when it comes to clothes. I am passionate about very different styles. But one thing I'm certain is that I've loved your style for about 2 years now. And that's the basis I wanna build a capsule wardrobe on aswell. My question is, if you read this, where do you buy knitwear / which materials to look forward. And if you believe its still worth it to invest in those, when I am currently very overweight and on a weight loss journey. Do they still make sense when they look loose? Should I wait till I'm at least medium sized?

    Ecco does great shoes, but you'd have to check how ethical they are because I do know they have 100% leather shoes. But they're fantastic quality shoes and I always get compliments on mine. They have an arched sole which is SO much more comfortable than the flat shoes you get nowadays. I've had eccos that have lasted me years.

    Cheap knitwear is the worst! I’ve made so many mistakes with it and now I’ve completely stopped buying knitwear with acrylic or polyester. It’s bad for the environment and holds up very poorly. Pure wool, viscose, cotton or cashmere is the way to go for me now. I got some very good quality jumpers from both uniqlo and & other stories that were not too expensive but still pure wool, and they’ve held up so well! Thrift shops are also great. Same goes for coats, going for a wool coat will give you one that will last for many years :)

    Just a thought, I feel like you should be cautious with the phrase ”I need”. There’s a vast difference between need and wants, and tbh your ”I needs” sound like you want. I’m not pointing this out to be mean. I’m pointing this out because you have an influence on the people who watch you (and because global warming is a real issue and we should all consider what we really ”need”).

    As always, really enjoy your capsule wardrobe videos; I found your summary of the last year very useful especially seeing where you went wrong and the reasons for getting rid of those items. I too am trying to reduce my waste and shop more mindfully. I was wondering though, if you have any suggestions for more ethical ways to get rid of clothes. Many of the clothes donated to charity shops still end up in landfill sites, or will be donated to people less able to afford clothes in poorer countries. This then has a hugely negative impact on clothes shop owners, dress makers and other small business, often putting them out of business. I have stacks of things built up in my attic from years ago and have no idea how best to get rid of them.

      Have you used depop before? It's a great place to sell and find wonderful clothes and it's a really nice community. If you don't want to add to energy waste from posting things, then I'd recommend hosting a clothes swap with your friends or selling your clothes at a local jumble sale or car boot sale. That way you know they're going to a good home.
      I'd add that while it's true that charity shop clothing sometimes ends up abroad (whether in landfill sites or local communities), if you can, ask the people at the charity shops nearest you if there is any particular clothing item they're really in need of (often it's things like good quality jackets in cold weather). If you have anything they really need, focus on bringing that.

    Really liked this and will try and do the same for my wardrobe. If you're looking for dungarees and and jumpsuits Lucy & Yak are a great ethical brand which do both. Thanks for sharing. Much love 😊 x

    Are the Yesstyle items made out of viscose? Cause if they are that's probably why they are shrinking. Try ironing them, that should restore their original shape.

    I love some of these pieces you’re donating to the charity shops, it’s a shame you’re not putting them on depop or something!

      jazbeesonmusic re-selling would sometimes be a more ethical way of recycling clothing. Sure, sometimes charity shops are able to sell the clothing but if not, they are shipped of to third world countries. Out of sight out of mind.
      The problem is that these countries are filled with our abandoned clothing. Huge piles of it. I think the problem goes by the name ”pepe”. It’s talked about in the true cost documentary.

      @@melnatalks Yap. Clothing donations are also harmful for local business in developing countries. Good intentions don't always lead to better outcomes.

    For bag recommendations I'd say the Nunoo Alimakka Suede bag. You have a rather scandinavian clothing style and that is the bag everyone is rocking here atm. xx
