So true. My piggies are fine with loud noises like the vacuum without a problem. But if I walk in the room suddenly, without saying a word, they will scramble. So, I start talking to them as I'm approaching the room and then they start talking back and are happy when I walk in 😊

@@ScottysAnimals we all talk to them while entering. (The same with horses) . I have a code language so with different intentions with the meeting... They know what to expect. I do clicking sounds with tounge while fixing things in the cage when not taking them out then they relax. Or while 'just' cuddeling with them. Well. Them... Just got one right now.(if not telling horses when You enter You can get badly hurt or killed).

Me and the piggies live on the upper floor of our house and the staircase to the bottom floor is right outside of our room, so they start talking right when I take the first step. What makes it even cooler is that they never do that with any of my other family members , and I don't even have to talk to them to let them know it me, cause they can already tell by the sounds of the stairs and my footsteps ❤️

My old guinea pig Jasper was not scared of anything. In fact, I remember one time a vacuuming around his cage he ran right up to it and started rumble, strutting and challenging the vacuum cleaner to a fight. It was hilarious. Even after I turned it off he was still growling at it, like, as if the vacuum cleaner owned him money. He wasn’t doing it out of self-defense. He was legit, trying to square up with it.

On having them outside: the additional reason to have them in a pen or other enclosure is that if they're startled, they'll run *away* from you. They're "familiaphobes," which means they scatter when scared or startled, so the predator doesn't get the whole family. I made the mistake of assuming mine would run towards me as a familiar, safe presence. Wrong! And thus many a merry chase was had....

thank you for this video, really helpful. I was amazed to find out our guineas really enjoy the cats company. I mean they are usually in their cage minding their own business and in comes the cat starring at them on the outside of their cage, and they go up to the cage closer to the cat and they sorta smell him around and he smells them back. Even when i pick em up and cat comes near they reach out to him almost touching noses and they do not withdraw in fear. They sorta have this mutual friendship, they are more scarred of humans but they're fine with the cat lol!

Thank you for the information about the rumblestrutting. I have a 10 month old guinea pig (named April) and a 8 month old guinea pig (named Apple). I don't know if it's because the fact that Apple is in her teenage months or if she is in heat but she will rumblestrutt and chase April for 2-3 days out of each month. April is very patient and usually just puts up with her but they have never drawn blood. Occasionally April will give her a little butt punch just to get her to back off. They will sleep 6 inches away from each other and if one lets out with a little cry they immediately go check on each other. So this lets me know that they are ok with each other and just to make sure that things don't escalate to an actual fight or blood being drawn. They are in the same room with me so I constantly look out for any aggression.
I have them in the Midwest pen for guinea pigs with 2 of the log hideys and 2 water bottles. I have 2 of the Space Homes from the Guinea pig rescue as well. They stopped using them this summer and it gets very hot here (even with air conditioning) so I'm thinking the enclosed house was simply too warm for them. They used them over the winter so when it starts cooling off we are going to put one back and see if they start using it again. Your videos are very helpful. Thanks Scott!

    Number 2
In the Summertime my guinea pigs spend a lot of time in the garden. The first time they get out after the cold season I put some of their indoor equipment on the grass like houses or (used) blankets. It has the smell of their home territory and are small islands of their save hide outs.
When they enter a new wide area they need sth they know and means safety for them. After a while they venture out and explore the new area... an almost endless field of delicious gras (yummy) and wooden hide outs (made for outdoor)

Due to a predator pet, an alligator, I got my two lady piggies, which turned into 9 piggies all together. I currently have 5 girls and one boy (he can see them but can't touch!). I have 4 cats and 1 dog. The doggo wants to clean the piggies like he cleans the kitties, but is denied, but the piggies love to touch noses with him. 3 out of the 4 kitties could care less about the piggies, but kitten who is the same age as the younger piggies wanted to "play" with piggies. I have two large cages attached for the girls one is covered one not. Kitten jumps in and decides to "play" I'm trying to get untangled from a fish tank cleaning, when I got to the cages my sassy girls were teaching kitten piggie manners. So now he jumps in the cage if people he doesn't know come near his piggies. He occasionally sleeps in the open cage with the girls sleeping and eating around him. So he's considered piggie no. 7.

@The pigeon Weirdo I know Im sorry I did have 2 piggies but long story about that..... So I thought my guinea pig had parasites so I gave him that oral horse medicene that was. Recommend in los Angles piggie rescue and I gave my piggie to much l so I brought him to the exotic emergency room and just to get it in it cost 130 not including medicene. This was the 3rd or 4th week that I had my guinea pig sandy and max. So i wanted to treat the medicene because it was cheaper and I'm only 16 so I dont have that kind of money to take him to the vet so i thought i gave him a little bit but the next day he was not well so i told my mom we need to take him to the vet. I knew I did not have the money to take him but my mom she paid $160 and they wanted to keep him at the hospital over night but that would cost me about $700. So I told her to just pay the doctor for the visit and the fluided that he got because i knew I would never pay her back.(So when I turn 16 I got $125 and i really wanted a guinea pig so my mom told me you are responsible and buying everything the guinea pig need. So i went to the petsmart and my cousin gave me money to support and she said you can buy two. So i did. I bought 2 male baby guinea pigs.) So back to the story my mom said that I was unreasonable to do. She said if i was responsible than you wouldn't of pick the $130 instead of him getting the treatment he need which was going to cost my mom $700 and there was no way i could pay her back. So that why I went with the option to pay for the visit and fluided that they gave him. So my mom said she giving my healthy guinea pig away and your keeping the sick one . she said you should of listen to me when we saw that thing underneath his eye instead you bought that medicene. I was so sad when she said that.my heart was really torn because I really wanted to keep him. I thought my other guinea pig wasent going to make it because I overdose him 100 times more than the dose he was suppose to have and the doctor sai he is half blind and some part of his nucor logical brain is damage. I felt really bad like really really bad I was crying and kept telling my guinea im so sorry over and over . and praying to god to make him better. All i wanted to do is to help and give him Medicene to kill that parasite under his eyes. Then the doctor said he didn't even have parasites it was a ringworm. Thats when I had all the guilt becasue it was my fault that my piggie sandy is sick and if he died I just don't know what I will do. I just always had that heart for animals. Always wanted to keep them safe and then this happen to my piggie because of me
Thankfully my sick guinea is now back to healthy. He is not blind and he just back to his normal self.I thought he was going to pass away but god made him better. So that how I end up having one guinea pig now. Now I make sure I know everything about piggies so I want ever have that experience again. And this wasent to long ago. This happen in june of 2020. So I have learn a big lesson. But he was my first guinea pig and still is. Although I still wish my mom didnt give max away because I know these are social aninals and now sandy is by himself. He still scared of me but with this video it defintely help. This channel has truly save me and I hope he knows this. I know when you read this your going think im a bad person but please know that I love animals and will never hurt them on purpose.(sandy is know letting me pet him and he eating freah veggie out of my hand so when i put my hand in the cage he dont feel as threaten. Also I hope you understand the story not sure if this will even makes sense to you but hopfully you get the point) also do you have any tips to make my piggie sandy happy or more entertain because he by himself. I would get another one but i dont think my mom would let me .i am just going to show my mom that I can do this an show that I really do care abut my piggie sandy and he deserve a buddy to play with. His cage is really big. Its a c&c cage and i made pretty big so i think another could fit plus I only have to buy more hay and pellets. My mom says why you got him in that big cage. He was find that store bought cage. She dont really understand but thats okay. Hopefully I could talk my way to maybe get another piggie so sandy can have a friend. Remember I did not mean to harm sandy but all that matters is he is still here healthy as can be. And wanting to eat all veggie but he can't. Lol

We get really loud severe storms here and the boys just rumblestrut at the first few bangs, then ignore it. Pretty sure they missed the memo on predators too, they confidently go up to the wire to touch noses with the cats (fully enclosed cage, cats cant get in without opposable thumbs), and if the cats jump up beside me during lap time the piggies will always try to greet them. The cats arent so sure about them when the piggies aren't caged though and usually bolt!😆

Guinea pigs would also fear living in the same enclosure as another animal (ie rabbits). They can only live with other guinea pigs.

Predator pets: lots of people will say "I know my cats would never hurt my piggies," or hamster, or rats, or gerbils, mice, chinchillas, etc. I used to be one of those people. I lived with cats, dogs, and small animals for years because my sister had all of them. None of her cats paid any attention to her small animals. Only one of her dogs displayed any interest. We were cautious of her and never let her get close enough to snatch up one of them. Then I moved and my roommates had 3 cats. I had one cat. I had a couple of hamsters and again, never feared for their safety at all. None of the cats were interested. Then I got into a relationship and he and I moved in together. My older cat had passed away by then. We got a couple of guinea pigs and later a few hamsters of different types. Then my niece found two young kittens, and she and her mom had close to ten cats at the time. I decided to adopt the two kittens, bringing them home when they were about six months old. Within days, tragedy struck. One of our hamster cages had a door that didn't latch well. We went out for a while and found our hamster dead on the kitchen floor upon our return. He had pushed open his cage door and gone exploring, which he had done a few times before. The difference was that there were now two cats in the house. It still breaks my heart to think of what he must have gone through before he died. He was not bloody or chewed up. They just "played" with him until he stopped moving. My poor baby. I'm so sorry! We decided to replace all of our cages at that point, buying new ones with two safety mechanisms to keep the door shut. We felt like we had done our best to protect our remaining little ones. But, when we let these cats into the bedroom where the small animals are, they were not like any previous cats I'd been around. They were hyper-focused on the piggies and hamsters, and rats at that time too. They would not stop jumping on top of the cages or stalking around the sides. We decided we would watch then when we let them in the room, never leave them alone with the cats in there, and not let the cats in when we were asleep. It didn't take very long before we realized that was a mistake. One of the cats came in the room, and we had a sweet, friendly dwarf hamster. He heard me and came up on his ledge to say hello and the cat started patting the side of the cage. As I yelled at the cat and started to get up to put him put of the room, his claw hit my little hamster in the eye. My little baby was dead ten minutes later. I wanted to kill myself because I had been right there and wasn't fast enough to prevent it. The cats haven't hurt any more of them, but we are hyper-vigilant to the point of paranoia. Even at now 3 years old these cats relentlessly stalk and want to harass the piggies and hamsters. The rats passed a while back. My point in telling you this is that you may have cats or dogs who you think won't hurt your little ones, but you never know. Some cats or dogs may be indifferent to them, but others like my current ones are ridiculous in their pursuit of what they consider their prey. I will not let my cats hurt or kill another hamster or a piggie. But I've learned my lesson. NEVER EVER trust a cat or a dog with a small animal.

Just thinks they are tiny puppies and gets angry at us when he isn’t aloud to protect them When we have our neighbors over and their little kid wants to play with them. One of them is just obsessed with Zues. To the point where she had gotten a habit of his. 😂 Whenever I say paw to my dog, she would copy him.

My guinea (3 y.o) was actually very curious about my cat (16 y.o) and my cat even afraid at first, later they were often sleeping on my lap, both at the same time. I guess it's really dependent on animal's personality and perhaps their age.

My piggy (Ms. Piggy, who unfortunately passed away last year) was absolutely terrible to other guinea pigs. She was the last piggy who hadn't been adopted from the humane society so we were looking elsewhere to find her a friend but she kept trying to attack all of the other pigs we tried to introduce her to but she was absolutely fine by herself. Weirdly enough she was completely fine with our dogs and they only interacted when she was kept inside her cage or on someone's lap but she didn't mind them at all. She was a weird little piggy but she was definitely very happy with her situation although she was always surrounded by kids.

Scotty I need some advice. My two Female guineas rumble and poke each other at the same time. Along with aggravated squeaks and butt sways. I have had them for almost a year. One will let me pet her but has taken after the fear factor of the other. They are very scared and idk how I can repair the bond between me and them 😭 I was in the beginning very slow with them. I would let them come to me. Then I would tempt them with foods and gave them a cue word of come here or yum yum. After a month I would attempt picking them up gently... this is when fears arose so high. They just seem to be interested in feeding time and not spending time with me... it’s not very bad because the one let’s me pet her but the little one is so SKITTISH. Sometimes it will bite gently my hand, not enough to break the skin... yet. I will not give up on these two GPs! I know with time and patience I can somehow gain more trust than what we have now. Is there anyway or things I can do. Drop as many questions for me as you want I will try to answer them the best I can. Thank you and I hope you can help me and my babies.

I really need some help on something. So bedding is a little on the expensive side where I'm at so I need to figure something else out. I've been really considering to myself to use just a the bedding I have now and try to potty train my guinea pigs and then use fleece liner. I wondering if guinea pigs could actually be potty trained? I've heard of it but never experienced it. If it is possible what is an estimate amount of weeks or months even it can be done.

I just got a bonded pair of male piggies, so these videos are amazing!! I never knew all of this!! Are there any tips you can give for two rescued adult guinea pigs? They're very skiddish still until I hold them, eat mainly their hay and not the food I bought, and sometimes they make noises that confuse me. I've got an octagon shaped cage that's open on top, but I've rigged it so that there's a blanket on top as a lid to let them feel safer running around, I've also added another cage to give them a viewing room if they feel brave enough to peek around the room at us. I have a harness for each as well,I don't know if you can use that on piggies, but I want to take them outside at some point. They've been producing a lot of beans too, I don't know if it's regular though because they eatso much.. they've regulated to my routine a bit too. when I add treats or hay, I pull the blanket back and they run to their hay bowl waiting for me. Also, my piggie oryo like.. tried to bite me a few times. Is there a reason why he would do that out of nowhere? Snickerz licks me and my bf, does that mean he likes us? Lastly, what toys and such should I get them to entertain them when I'm not around? And is there a way to get them to like me more? Carrots and broccoli are their favorite snacks so far ^^ thank you so much for your help so far, and if this gets answered, thank you again! I admire you and all that you do!

Given the extreme temperatures currently in the UK (32-38c🥵) I moved them from outside into their winter home which is much cooler in summer but warmer in winter. It's about 8x5 foot, so plenty of room for plenty of hideys.....😓

Oddly my new guinea pig boy (Yes hes single for now, was a surprise "Gift" although I really don't have space if I get another and they have to be separated. Not quite sure what to do about that yet.) seems to enjoy the company of my small dog and vice versa. They meet at the cage and play back and forth. At the start I thought Squeaky the guinea pig was running away but the more I watched I realized he was doing laps around the cage then meeting back up with the dog at the door, squeaking and running and popcorning! He was "Gifted" to us before Easter this year and since then its been amusing to watch them. They are like a pair of long lost buddies who just wanna romp around with each other. The dog gets more freaked out than the guinea pig. :')

3:12 if you have a cage with roof (unlike Scottys here) then that is something you can use to enclose the area
Just for GODS SAKE DO NOT, and i repeat DO NOT lift the cage up before the guinea pigs. Use the attached openings in the cage to get them out before doing so, and in for that matter (AKA Plant the cage before the Guinea Pigs)
I got very close to one of mine hiding in a bush because someone made a mistake. It wasnt me, but i was the one suffering from it.
