    Eli, I’m new here and simply adore your joyous approach to gardening (tho I could never, ever be so tidy). Figs are amazing - sweet and delicious. The secret is to NOT over-fertilize. They are easy/no-care trees that are pest-free here in North Carolina. Ripe the moment that lil fruit droops just a bit on its branch. Yum! I’ve got 5 metal garden beds and a big ol’ bunch of grow bags. I am plagued with horrid voles and rampant grass/weeds so planting above-ground works for me. I am embarking on Year Two of veg growing. Watching seeds grow (on shelves in the dining room 😱) is simply amazing. Keep those videos coming! You are a garden treasure, dear one! 👍🏻👍🏻

    Hey Eli, I have grown Appletree, cherrytree, peartree , blackberry, rasberry, gooseberry, current and strawberries in pots , for years and it works great. They need more plantfood, water and some new compost every year and a bigger pot every 3 years till outgrown. As plantfood I use sheepwoolpallets, horsedungpellets, seaweed and homemade nettle juice. It helps to put a garlicglove in to the pots with fruittrees.
    Sheepwool also saves water. Your garden is lovely and flowers are a must for bees. We also have front and backgardens here. Mostly frontgardens are the same, flowers and trees or shrubs. Unless they are dead stonegardens without plants.
    Horrable.
    I still grow lots of plants in pots, Topinambur, potato, peas and beans go great in pots. 🌻

    Hey Eli,
    Loved this weeks video 👍🏼 - note on strawberries we had are best harvest ever last year as we used the folding poppy trugs for all our strawberries plants, that good we now have bought 5 great as you can move them about in the garden easily, you can fit a full 40L compost bag in each much better crop than in the small 3 tier hanging rope tins you can buy or the small multi stacked 3 tier plant pots - filled the others with bulbs in the bottom for spring then summer over planted my mini bush tomatoes plants - veranda red / summer last / sweet n near yellow / 100’s & 1000’s micro tomatoes - best outdoor tomatoes seeds we used last year were mostly the blight resistant type - looking forward to watching you guys this year along with plot37 - you really inspire us to try and grow more veggies and flowers- my big thing to master this year is spring onion they fail each time but this year is the year 🤞🏻 hopefully take care Kelly

    I grew dwarf,determinate, tumbling and basket tomatoes last year in my polytunnel. What a disaster it was... most of them split with the humidity and got slugs and all sort of beasties living in the plants (first time I've ever seen that amount of slugs in the poly) They at least did good in containers outside for my friends and fam, so will do some for them again to go through those seeds.
    I suggest up-potting your fruit trees this year. I've made many mistakes with those size of pots and just seeing your babies in the gives me anxiety haha
    With the heat waves we've had, the large pots have been a life safer (I forget about things in containers and just focus on my raised beds tbh) After the second or third year, I tend to plant some shallow rooted annual flowers in the tree pots. My four year old cherry tree with the biggest tub was happy to host strawberries and bunny tail grass last year.
    All my garlic has rotted with the rain (I forgot to drill extra drainage holes in my new containers...) I planted new one last week and at the very least, I'll get some tasty green garlic.

      It’s a funny one how different our spaces and expectation of them are, I often hear about US gardens being bigger than mine but would you believe mine is considered a reasonably big garden for here?
      Now I have to ask cause I don’t know what you mean, what are tore sips? We know totes here are small canvas bags for shopping (quite small and cheap).

    • @j.b.6855
      @j.b.6855 Год назад

      @@eliandkate I like Scott's channel, been subscribed there for a long time even though his zone if very different than mine. One of the things I got from his channel is to glean useful info no matter the location.
      I was blessed with an extra large backyard. My total area devoted to growing is about 100' x 25' (feet in case the notation is confusing). But I mainly do container gardening because of a buried petroleum pipe under my backyard. Better safe than sorry since I grow a lot of food. So I watch a lot of small garden channels as they usually have container videos.
      A SIP is a Sub Irrigated Planter, been trying to get Scott to try one for a long time. They can be made out of anything that holds water. There are lots of video's on them on YT, look for "diy earthbox" or earthbucket to see an example. Totes in the US are big plastic storage bins with snap on lids. I will be using 55 gallon ones. I also have lots of 5 gallon bucket sip's. They cut down on frequent watering, and when mulched cut down weed pressure.
      I got into gardening at 55, how I wish I had discovered I liked it earlier. The green thumb of my grandmother skipped a generation it seems. She had a small backyard and a flower garden with flowers packed into every nook and cranny.

    Eli do you put any winter protection around the fig tree as a plot neighbor said he is going to gift me a cutting but being right on the NE coast I'm not convinced it will do well. He keeps his tree in the greenhouse on his plot mine would have to live outside south facing.

      We didn’t no.
      We were really that serious about it so didn’t really put any effort on.
      I saw some folk have theirs in the ground, same variety so figured it should be ok

    Hi Eli, Just wondering if there is anything that you cannot grow being near the sea? I am 1 minute away from the beach and would like to see if anything is just not possible with the salty air. I only grew my tomatoes outside last year (my first year) and got absolutely loads, I still have about 10 KG in the freezer.. My garden is north facing but is 80% sun all day. Happy New Year to you both.

      @eliandkate  Год назад

      Hey Stuart 😀
      Hmmmm to be honest I think I’m really lucky that we’re sheltered from the sea front by quite a few streets and we all have high fences on that side so we don’t get the worst of it.
      The biggest problem is the salt and wind, you need some kind of barrier, like the fence or tall hedging, otherwise you end up with a lot of scorched leaves, especially on the more tender plants.
      Our biggest issue as I’ve said before is the lawn. We have such a hard time keeping a lawn out front where there are no barriers. It gets burned and bald really quickly so needs a lot of work to keep on top of it. The back garden isn’t as bad, it’s protected and north facing.

    I grew up in Scotland and I never knew there could be rules about not growing veg in your front garden! I find that crazy, to be honest. Here in Germany (land of rules!) I'm also clueless, but I live in the country, my house is on its own, it's farms all around, and my front garden gets some good sun, so I've got veggie beds in it. Nobody has told me I can't - and believe me they would - so it must be ok here!
    I need more flowers for the pollinators but I don't know what... I'll have to look in my local supermarket seeds section when it turns up about February...

      yeah one of those things, there are a few things like that written into the deeds, always worth checking before you buy. Some of them are good, like no fixing cars in the street or your drive... its meant as a way of keeping the neighbourhood nice - so a good thing

      @@eliandkate gosh! The car fixing thing is harsh too. Me and all my exes have always fixed our own vehicles... There's some places I read won't even let you in a flat dry your washing on the veranda, or in a house on the front garden. I must admit I considered it all a bit of snobbery... But I suppose some folks do take the proverbial and it's good to have a means to make them buck up their ideas.
