Occy still unmatched, his power is mind blowing to see in person.
Agree. 100%. I’m from Tugun on the goldy and can attest to Occys power first hand. I’ve been in the line up with the best of them and Occy rules.
Kong.
You can’t have a top five power surfers, without having Larry Bertlemann, and Tom Carroll on the list.
Tom Carroll is the first name I thought of when I read the title.
Or Kong
KONG…
Good list of fine surfers. My additions; Nat Young, Michael Peterson, BK, Hakman, Greg Noll. Thanks for the clip.
I think recency bias and the generation he's competing against has everyone thinking he's more new school trickster... But John John has laid down some of the biggest open face power turns of which no one has ever seen before nor done since. Margret River, Haleiwa, Sunset, Log Cabins.. When someone does power turns that no one else can mimic - eg.. JBG backside snap, Sunny forehand squat, Occy backside carve and what JJF did at Margarets, it should cement you on this list.
FACTS
I AGREE
A power surfing list without Barry Kanaiaupuni isn’t legit. His bottom turn alone was legendary
Kinda surprised there’s no Andy considerations
Results from viewer poll
@@RealSurfStories maybe most of the people taking the pole are too young to remember , but he had a beautiful blend of power and style , no matter what the size was.
Legends never die ! The real surfers and powerfull turns
Random addition--early 80's, Bud Llamas was an absolute gouging powerhouse.
Martin Potter should have made the list, come on kooks😂
What about KONG???
Right there !
I saw him in 1987 win at MAXXED out Sunset TWICE... The World Cup and Billabong Pro.
But I have surfed with JBG at Pipe and Sunset too many times...
Best surfer???....JBG is nowhere close.
Most power...JBG! And it ain't even close.
I’ve surfed with everyone featured here.
All power mongers to be sure but Dane Reynolds smokes all comers. He’s easily the most powerful surfer I’ve ever seen in all conditions. I’ve never seen anyone bury not just the rail but often his entire board and still come flying out of the turn with speed to spare. Hell, he’ll even sink his board and come to a dead stop yet still force his way out of it and pull speed out of seemingly nowhere. It’s utterly bizarre. He’s the Salvador Dalí of power surfers.
I think Dane is more skill than power
@@jonathanhalloran5350 I’ve surfed with Dane heaps. I stand by what I said.
@@shacktime Is 'power surfing' defined by how many buckets get thrown? I reckon it is. Nah mate. Dane just throws his board. Not the water. He's dinky... in my opinion. But I admire your conviction. Go watch Brendan Margeison, a real power surfer, and see if you can draw any comparisons.
@@jonathanhalloran5350 I owned Wanderjahr and watched it religiously. Margo’s power comes from his size. And you’re a raging kook for thinking Dane’s surfing is dinky, Donkey. You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.
Ted Robinson consistently threw some of the biggest rooster tails of anyone ever. And he’s never been considered a power surfer.
I saw sunny one time and he did a cutback roundhouse and the spray covered us all watching from like 20 feet away
thanks for the time machine effect...something for the folks watching RUclips on VHS?
😂😂💯💯
Taylor Knox should be in the conversation.
My top 3 are
1.Pancho
2.Johnny-Boy
3.Occy
Honorable mentions: Sunny, Taylor Knox,AI, and Carroll
There’s the new breed of surfers who are powerful as well that should be in the conversation like JJ and Ethan Ewing.
Kong, Pottz , Laird…
Dane Reynolds, Clay Marzo…
show some Sunset and Haleiwa. Kanaiapuni, Hakman, Occy, Fanning, Slater
Cairns, Peterson, Young, Anderson
Pancho Power 💥
Yeah and if you also notice all of those Surfers were pretty much 80s 90s Surfers when the boards still required a good amount of power to be great. RLTW 3/75
No Kong, no Carroll?
You're kidding yourself.
I put both of them them in the video but the Top 5 results were voted on by the viewers.
@Bebtelovimab 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Come on TR, you’re from the same era as I am and you cannot have a list of power surfers and not include the all time number one power surfer of all time (or maybe you’re gonna do a video of just him, like “and the guy who showed them all how power surfing is done …..,”) the one the only RICHARD CRAM!!!! That guy was the man and dropped off to tour ranked #10 in the world (I believe) but well within the coveted top 16 to work for quick and stay home and raise a family. And that was unheard of, giving up a seeded spot on the tour and he just dropped off the map as far as footage and shots in the American mags were concerned but you could still find radical images hidden within Australia’s surfing world and a couple other of the Aussie mags but they were rare. But the guy was regarded by this whole list as the man when it came to power and laying it on a rail. And he just oozed style too with his hand and arm placement just total 80’s Aussie style!!!!
KONG. By a country mile, if you left him out you have NFI.
Absolutely…how can’t he be on the list
Haha exactly 💯
It's not my list, you viewers voted.
@@RealSurfStoriesdude you put 5 surfers on this list….. how can viewers choose if they can only decide on 5
@@ChickenJoe-tq6xd I asked voters to write in votes as the poll field only had 5 spaces
Boards were so much bigger especially on big waves. JJF buries his whole board on committed turns. Agree with occy and sunny.
Gary Elkerton enters the chat
Dear Mr. Real S. Stories, Am thinking you should have named this video "Who are the top Power Surfers of the modern era" . Of all time? No way. The greatness of many is lost for those who try to select from the age of the video camera only. Where is Phil Edwards or even Duke Kahanamoku? And many other Hawaiians from days of yore? Best Wishes in the new year.
Pretty clear correlation between my channel's viewer demographic age and who they voted for.
Then why video 'Of All Time' ? Surely time exists since before and thru the totality of surf history- but I get your point. Thanx for your response. P.S. Cowabunga- What Excitement etc. @@RealSurfStories
There are alot of great tube riders at pipe these days but you never see any of them throwing vertical snaps. Why!!!
Next try better make the title " the ten power surfers of all time" so you can include all these others well deserving....
You guys are all right Carrol,Cram, Potter, Knox you sure cannot leave them out
The viewers voted. They could have voted for anyone from any generation. Who they voted for clearly represents my channel deomographic viewer.
The voters.....how many?
Names and addresses please
Those exclusion s need to be re evaluated
Surf torture s might be in order as well
Mandatory pool surfing for the younger generations, swimming at Guadalupe island for the old guard....
Hey,thank you for the video
Kealoha is always appreciated, the stance of a black panther
@@ugocdf7706 😂
Nat Young
Sunny Garcia's Spray Burns my Brain leaving imprints for 3 seconds after!!!! 🤦♂
felipe toledo, etan ewing and gabe medina would top that list if we are to be realistic in 2023. thas more like a list for the 90's
let's be clear, Medina does not even know how to bury a rail doing a turn, JJF and Ethan are the modern day masters of powerful surfers.
If we are talking about Brazilian power surfers I would say William Cardoso, Wiggoly Dantas and his brother Wesley Dantas or Leo Neves.
concordo com todos menos willian cardoso o panda nao surfa onda com mais de 6 pes dai nao da para saber se ele teria uma boa performance em ondas de verdade.@@sambado
@@caiorolim1862 É um argumento válido e eu aceito.
Toledo is a speed surfer, dude barely has any power in his turns
JBG, and it ain't even close.....
I surfed with JBG and Sunny at Makaha and the North Shore.
Occy once
Pottz twice
Laird several times.
Kong
Carrol several times.
Ross Clark Jones
Poncho Sullivan
Ian Cairns
And the whole Sunset pack...
Power????
JBG
or
Junior Moepono
Name dropper. A hundred other people surfed with them the same day.
@@drivebyquipper
I lived for four years.
Every single comment has names....
Except you weak one.
Shoo fly.
@@francus7227 What a poser. Lol!
@drivebyquipper
Yeah sure.....
Tom curren?
The style king, but not what I think of when I think power. He lets the wave dictate his surfing, a style I like more, but power surfers use that back foot and make the wave suit them.
john john florence
Dane is the best surfer who ever lived in small waves
Dane Reynolds yes top 10
I guess Kelly never lived in Florida for his whole childhood
@@ChickenJoe-tq6xd Kelly was nowhere near Danes level in rippable waves. I bet Kelly would even tell you himself. Kelly was obviously better at competitions
Tom Carroll, by a mile.
If you were basing this list on 1 turn in a whole career, you would have to say Tom Carrol is the best power surfer.
I was on the beach that day, but i thought of Tommy for way more then that one turn. I was more hyped on the way he spun around under Derick Ho and took off so late. But he had many Sunset beach surfs as well that put him up there. Nothing but respect for all these guys
@@charlieduvall6463 Oh absolutely. Tom was a beast. What a privilege to witness that! Did it look as good as it does on all those videos?
You forgot Tommy Carrol.. I'd have to say it was Johnny boy next to Carrol
You mean the voters forgot?
I can't respect a power list without Tom Carrol on it. He's tied for 1 with Occy.

Didn't watch the video because I don't have to!
Ben Gravy is the GOAT ! ! ! Nuff said.
Nub Nation !
Sofa king funny...
Do you get a sticker for the comment? Lol!
@@drivebyquipper
It's a top ten comment of the year..... Just under the wire for NYE 2024
ben gravy is not even close of being a pro surfer like for example if he was to live in australia he would just average.
@caiorolim1862
The only reason this popped up for you is because the algorithm picked up on anacronym G.O.A.T. You really should get back to your goats in Cairo.....
Ben has 192 subs....
That's PROFESSIONAL in my book.
What are your accomplishments?
Besides your harīm of goats..... We know what you're doing with them when only the stars are out.
How in the hell can Tom Carrol not be on this list!?
ask the viewers who voted
Not sure about this list. AI blows Sunny Garcia and the rest away. I’m fine with Occy at the top of the list; but Tom Carrol also blows the other 4 away on this list.
Agree. The viewers voted. TC at Sunset coming up!!
Chappy Jennings lol JK. Laird and Dane! Occy is a phenomenal surfer lol but not "power" I mean he's like 5 4" seriously. A Richard Cram cut back -- dat B POWER.
Too much "Peformers"... Hee hee hee
JBG is the most powerful.
@@francus7227 Yep true Johnny Boy IS... Prolly should have mentioned him for sure.
@toothnail605
I watch The Performers every night for four years before moving to Hawaii for four more.....
I know what I saw...
Thanks for agreeing...."enough".
The "goat" are never 100%
Ke11y is easily #1
He isn't even top 25 at Sunset and will tell you so.
Mike Ho is goat at Sunset and it isn't even close....
@@francus7227 Grew up watching M Ho at Sunset lol ABC wide world of sports and yep agree with dat 1! I met him a Trestles a few years ago super friendly and humble, I was stoked to talk with him a bit, told him he had a big influence on me.
To me a 'power surfer' has a lot to do with being more of a big guy and throwing your weight around being in the respected Top Tier... Still think AI is the King tho! Cause style is everythang. Peace
@@toothnail605
I'm too old to appreciate A.I.
He came and went (rip) at a time when I wasn't following surfing....
KONG
Simon Anderson & Barry K dont count...?
What is luke egan doing on that list? How about taylor knox instead?
Both great power surfers.
They left out Jock Sutherland.
S Pancho? You mean Pancho Sullivan?
Vivek is becoming more powerful
he's decent on the piano, but his attitude gonna get him sent to the beach
No Jordy no John John they make these guys look like a joke ?
The results were obviously dictated by my channel's viewer demographic age and who they voted for.
Luke Egan is a knock kneed surfer, not a power surfer!
What? Egan is every inch of a power surfer, knocked knees and all.
@shacktime top 5 not quite, hey I love Louie Egan don't get me wrong
