Most impressive part of this solo is Kirk was only 22.
And after nearly 40 years, Kirk still loves the song at nearly 62. I believe now that Cliff also might have influenced Kirk on this solo, maybe that’s also why he still loves it so much.

Kirk mentioned something about having to phone back to California to ask cliff how to come up with harmonies and then physically doing the math to write out the notes that corresponded with main licks. But I do think that may have been for another song on this album. It makes sense they repeated the technique here too.

I thinks it's doubled cause you can hear the difference in string noise on both sides and the harmonies remain the same loudness when they come in.

Firing Dave was good because it resulted in two good bands instead of just one, but Dave is a better soloist.

Kirk really had his best solos on this album
This is by far my favorite Metallica solo and this video is great to notice how james's rythm makes this so much bigger!

I just finished my cover of the whole song and the solo was definitely the hardest part. Doubling rhythm guitars is one thing but a solo is way harder.

It's 100% double tracked. I thought it was only heavy harmonized stuff that is easily hearable, but now I know for sure it's the whole thing. Dead give aways are very last notes that was screwed in the left channel, asynchronous beginning of the second half and different pick noise at different times in left and right channels
I remember an interview after Master of Puppets, Kirk discussed doubling all the solos. It's a big part of that sound, and I'm guessing part of what's missing in the newer lead work

Where did this Kirk go to? I hope he has a redemption arc since lux eaterna solo wise (musically in general but the solo are the worst part) is really bad. (This comment was made when Metallica dropped if darkness had a son)
And I'm not a hater I loved load reload DM and hardwired, all of those album have had good song with good solos but man... I feel sad
Instead of composing solos, he's chosen to improvise most of his stuff. People complain about Lars phoning it in, but at least he still composes and arranges the music together with James.
This solo was composed by Dave mustaine. but yes now he's so lazy...his solos are very weak and bad like lars's drumming.
@@locsbcn Dave composed the "spider riff" not the solo. He reused it for Wake Up Dead. The solo was all Kirk.

The solo is double tracked, so indeed Kirk played the same guitar parts twice. One's panned left and the other panned right which is why it sounds so "heavy"

The sped up part definitely has some Dave style licks, most notably the climb part

Shenker and Satriani definitely had way more influence on Kirk, however Kirk attended early Metallica shows in the Bay Area and Johnny Zazula made Kirk copy parts of Daves solos from no life til leather and put them on kill ‘em all. So I’d still say Kirks playing was moderately influenced by Mustaine for the faster thrashier stuff at least
