- P2 Progress - update No. 7 - James May and the slacking cock flange! Footage courtesy of Tom Ingall and BBC 'Look North' - if you want to know more see the website www.p2steam.com
Nice to see James back again. He's a legend! I can't wait five years to see this loco finished.
James is such a top bloke.
...and then you meet him and you see what he is really like! He is a real cock. Definitely not a people person, only interacts with his team and speaks to others only when the camera's are rolling.
Must be why he’s on top gear
Victorian Railways in Australia had a similar engine to the P2 or A4, slightly more tractive effort and with 1" smaller driving wheels, built in 1928. Ran a 190 mile non-stop service called the Spirit of Progress but sadly all 4 were scrapped. The Spirit of Progress was the Empire's first streamlined, air-conditioned and all steel express, with the blue and gold livery on locomotive, tender and carriages. The last carriage was an observation car with rounded end.
Some of the best if not arguably the best Victorian railways locomotive. Such a stunner, like the 520.
I can't believe how much has been done, I really can't wait to see this beast on the rails
Robtheredengine, hi. Video super?
After its built, we need to see its pulling power in action
James should visit the Big Boy being restored, makes the P2 look tiny. I guess they were designed for different uses, though. would be like comparing an apple and an orange.
True but both are amazing feats of engineering in their own rights.
...or possibly comparing peaches and two tons of semolina pudding.
More like comparing an apple and a Schwerer Gustav.
Imagine the size of Big Boy's slacking cock (flange).
It’s very large for British standards. British locomotives on average weighed around half of their North American counterparts by the mid 20th century.
Used to be called "The fizzle pipe".
Bit disappointed by the proposed name - the original P2's were all given Scottish names ('Cock o' the North', 'Earl Marischal', 'Mons Meg', etc.). They were designed to work Edinburgh-Aberdeen so it was be good to stick to tradition.
It's about time you all uploaded another video! Welcome back James May!
I'd love to see this finished. Originally they must have had some power to them. I wonder if they were route restricted with their wheel arrangement
Two notable James' who have aged very well are May and Hetfield.
thats both the p2 locos coming back because cock o the north will surely be joining prince of wales
Good to see anything made in the UK , good for retaining skill for manufacturing .
Great to see another video uploaded to this channel. Thought it was defunct. Great to see a celebrity getting involved!
It shouldn't matter, but it is nice having him do something for it.
Good to see some of our young people working in technologies that kicked off the industrial revolution in Britain, rather than being employed in a call centre...
All were scrapped! I love the way that when they do this they take the next number on the list.
looks like james is really here to help the team build 2007 prince of wales
It's great that they have James may involved in this but i also love he's doing this because he's interested and not because he has to !
Why "Prince of Wales"? The P2s were designed for the Edinburgh - Aberdeen route and given names from Scottish history.
The LNER would never have called it Prince of Wales. The LMS their rival had a class of loco called Prince of Wales. The title Prince of Wales doesn’t exist in Scotland. His title is Duke of Rothesay. Sounds to me like someone at the top is looking for a gong.
I am so glad they never mentioned what Thompson did to the class >.
Fun fact about Edward Thompson; he was the son-in-law of Sir Vincent Raven, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the North Eastern Railway (one of the Great Northern Railway's principal rivals pre-grouping), and had the Grouping not taken place, the smart money was on him becoming the NER's CME in the course of time.
Ah yes, but he did free the LNER/BR from more of that bloody awful conjugated valve gear for the inside cylinder.
could have all been academic. i was just reading that pre WW1 when britain had money still, there were plans to go electric and 1500v dc... also Gresley made some ugly as sin electric locos.
big thumbs up, proud to be a volunteer for 60163 & will do also for 2007 when shes on the rails, will there be an 'Off the Rails 2" from Mr Ingall, me thinks so, if viewers havent, head over to p2slc.co.uk and join the march to steaming this gaint B-)
Brian sewell are they going to build another one after prince of Wales
Well it was a little late on being finished in five years but let's go for 2029
I thought it was going to be cock of the north
Not this one! Although it will look very similar the original locomotive.
The P2 Steam Locomotive Company oh
thats not a "best workshop sweater", thats a "pipe in the library sweater" if ever i saw one.
5 YEARS darn i was hopping it would be done in 2019 or somthing
i shall be on that loco
Greats❤❤❤❤🎉🎉
I wish I could volunteer to help build it
80% to go could it sport yellow or red or maybe BR blue
5 years seems a bit to exagerated at the pase the engine is coming along
Clarkson: May!
Yep, The Cock of the North steam loco is a Mikado wheel arrangement.
Is there any chance it could be done before 2021?
What year is Prince of Wales scheduled to be completed
5 years is the projected timeline, so that's 2022.
well it's starting to look like a p2 now 🖒
It's been so long
After the p2 build a e2
There planning to make a V4 if memory serves me correctly.
Captain Slow working on the P2 again.
Five years? Hmmmm........ok, that's fine. Let's see...I'll be...15.
Jason Hodges well it took 17 years to do tornado and now they already know everyone who knows what to do or knows someone somewhere who does this that or the other, the most time consuming bit is gathering knowledge and skills, they had to do that with tornado but for this they don't have to do much more.
