The patient in this video came to Seoul Guide Medical for incisonal double eyelid surgery. This procedure is often known as upper eyelid blepharoplasty or double eyelid blepharoplasty as well. Double eyelid surgery is performed in order to crease the upper eyelids so that double eyelids are created. This procedure is often done for patients who have monolids, partial double eyelids, uneven double eyelids or have sagging of the upper eyelids. This procedure is done for both cosmetic and medical reasons. On the cosmetic side it can give you a more balanced look if your eyelids are evenly creased and can give you larger looking eyes. It can also be easier to apply certain styles of makeup afterward. On the medical side, decreasing saggy upper eyelids will allow for clearer vision.
Upper eyelid surgery should be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon experienced in this type of procedure. All plastic surgeons are qualified doctors but they tend to specialize over time. You want to choose a doctor that has experience perform these kinds of procedures. This procedure is considered an outpatient one. Typically, you can leave the clinic 2-4 hours after surgery is done or whenever you feel ready. This procedure is usually performed under a special type of non-sedative anesthesia. You will be awake for the procedure but under local anesthesia. In Korea this procedure is usually done while the patient is awake so the patient can open and close the eyes as requested by the doctor. This allows the surgeon to able to make an intraoperative decision and get a more accurate result. If the patient is sedated then the patient cannot open and close the eyes leading to less accurate results. Although you will be awake, the procedure is not considered painful as you are under local anesthesia which numbs the area.
These are the basic steps to double eyelid surgery using the incisional method:
- The proposed double eyelid line will be carefully measured and marked with a pen.
A local anesthetic will be given.
- Several small incisions will be made along the double eyelid line.
The marked skin will be removed.
- Muscle and fat tissue will be removed between the incisions.
- Incisions will be closed with stitches that will need to be removed four to seven days after surgery depending on the case.
- The incisional technique may be a good option if you have thick skin, need extra skin and fat removed, or are looking for a permanent result. Non incisional methods are good for some patients as well but in general the results for non incisional methods may not be permanent.
