It's a very old law that needs updating or removing.
In NY state, my grandmother had owned her home since the 1960s. During COVID, a "friendly neighbor" invited a "nursing aide" to live with my grandmother. Turns out the aide was undocumented, spoke no English, and had no nursing experience. The in-home nurse aide forged my grandmother's signatures, changed her will, tried to starve and medically neglect her to death, and then, when my mother found out what was happening and removed my frightened, thin, confused, bed-bound grandmother, the aide moved her family in and changed the locks. That was 2 years ago and we have been unable to legally get them to leave. They have stolen her home, all her belongings, and all our family heirlooms. The last time my mother went to the home and asked for family photo albums, they called the police, who escorted my mother off the property! Because the family is undocumented, they now have immigrants human rights groups fighting my mother's legal advances, and my mother is broke from caring for my grandmother, who was nearly killed by the ordeal. We have made no progress whatsoever in recovering her home, we can't even get a lawyer to take the case.
You can get another "tenant" in there to get rid of them. I just think it can't be someone related to you. There's a guy that moves in with squatters just to make their lives hell so they leave. Look up "squatter hunters".

About 10 years ago in Brooklyn, my husband and I rented out an extra bedroom to a tenant. The guy was alright for a while, then he trashed the apartment, refused to pay, refused to have any conversations, and when he started acting threateningly and erratically, we issued him a letter saying his stay had been terminated, changed the locks, and put his bags outside. He called the police, who showed up and personally dialed a locksmith for him. The locksmith broke our door and the police arrested my husband. They took my husband away and left me alone home with the tenant, who was actively behaving erratically. That's the NYC legal system for you.

A Swedish man got some problems with squatters in his summer house. Instead of involving police he went to the local biker club and invited them to a party with free beer and barbeque through the weekend - but explain there were a problem. Well - The problem disappeared before the weekend, and he got a lot of new friends.
We used to call this type of invasion, "Breaking and entering", a crime.

Good news is Florida governor Ron De Santis just signed legislation which empowers the home owners to get their property back from squatters by filing a complaint with the PD and then the police can evict and arrest the squatters and prosecute them for criminal invasion. @@ValenceFlux

It's utterly disgraceful that there is such a thing as squatters rights. It should be illegal to trespass on private property and even more so to set up home in someone else's property without permission. It's an issue in the UK too
"Squatter's Rights" is a TERM that should not exist. Right up there with "R@P3 culture".
Heres the problem with this: even if we reduce the squater to a tennant (e.g. if we say the squatter has any property right whatsoever) the landowner still has an unqueastionable right to enter their own property because the clearly established federal circuit law from multiple federal circuits states that property rights of a landlord are superior to the rights of a tennant at common law. Therefore, what this woman needs to do is file a 42 USC 1983 lawsuit against each and every officer on scene as well as against the booking officer upon grounds of false arrest and unlawfully interfering with the property rights of the owner.
The whole point is that not that she has no rights, but she has to fight that is court. Which is long and expensive.
That squatter clearly explains that: "take me to court" he says.
He knows, he is going to loose, but he will live there for months, destroy the property and move on.
The owner broke the law because she "unlawfully evicted a tenant"? He paid no rent and no agreement was in place so he cannot be a tenant. We should call it what it is: trespassing.

I have a friend in Connecticut who runs a B&B, a squatter came in, it took her over a year to get her out, lost a year of room rent plus incurred court fees which she will NEVER see back!! Be careful who you vote for people! I’m in Florida thankfully, we are renovating our home and living in a rental. I would be devastated if that happened to us!

Imagine having to be in the hospital for weeks and you live alone. You come home after 4-6 weeks in hospital and find squatters living there and you have no rights to kick them out. There is a part to the video where she was told that squatters can lay claim to the house after just 30 days. She asked the police what she could do? She was told to go through the court process. She asked how long does that take? She was told the process for her takes around 2 years. Let that sink in...The squatters just have to stay in house for 30 days, but her (the owner) must wait 2 years, and by then the courts will just tell her that her house that she still has to pay taxes on, now belongs to the criminal squatters. Wake the hell up Dem voters, this is what your party politicians are allowing.

Homeowners hear this, I have the perfect idea, next time you have an illegal squatter just do this… make them pay a rent so VERY ridiculously so sky high of an impossible price that you know for a fact they will never be able to pay it and all repairs and utilities are mandatorily require them to fix and pay out of their own pockets until they have no choice but to leave.
The fact that the police fail to look at the lady's paperwork for the house shows they fail to do their job. Salt on the wound she even got arrested in her own house thats grounds for a law suit. Just sue the police department, she'll not only get millions but also show police departments in the state what can happen if they fail to do their jobs properly.
The police didnt even check if the guy's paperwork was real, as a graphic designer I can forge any document so for him to show me any paperwork like that, I would still kick him out due to the real owner of the house requesting so.

You don’t get your car back right away either. I had my joke broken into and an item that the police took as evidence wasn’t returned to me for almost 10 years. When they finally decided they weren’t ever going to catch the invader they decided to give me my property back, after nearly 10 years of my property sitting in their evidence locker collecting dust.

Have a friend in sedro Woolley, Washington State that had squatters move into his trailer that was sitting on his grandmother's property. They completely destroyed the inside, apparently the drug smell was so heavy he could barely stand to being in there long enough to take pics. He confronted them and they wouldn't leave so he called the cops and they wouldn't remove them. He had to get a protection order the next day to get them out but he had to deal with the trailer. Cops told him he couldn't scrap it because their property was in it but the judge told him it was his trailer and could do as he wished. He promptly hooked it up and took it to the dump. Our system has failed us. Stop voting Democrat and this would be a good start

In addition, it is also a civil matter if a contracted tenent refuses to leave a home they have been legally renting, after a legal eviction. My husband is a landlord and has dealt with this many times.

I too was arrested for breaking into my own home ended up doing 8 months in jail before charges where dropped lost my home lived on the streets for 3 months .This is what Charles Schwab means when he says you'll owe nothing and be happy

Future squatters better be checking what states have "squatters rights"....because there are many states that DO NOT have these rights....they will be charged with TRESPASSING, BREAKING & ENTERING, and VANDALISM (and risk being on the losing end of the STAND MY GROUND laws and retaliation)

This has been happening alot around our country. All the home owner needs to do is write up a current lease agreement for themselves as renter and occupy the space. Also have the utilities changed over into your name so you have paper trail. It is a civil issue but with lease in hand cops have proof to remove anyone from premises they dont do the leg wirk to know who is yelling truth thats what court is for......sadly

I've lived in the same residential neighborhood in Oregon since 1979. "Friends" of the neighbor next door to me kicked the owner out after living with him for a while. It took over a year to get them evicted. In the meantime, they stopped making the mortgage and utility payments. They trashed the place and sold drugs from it. Our homes are right next to an elementary school. One of the squatters was a convicted sex offender. That didn't matter because he hadn't abused children. Yet. It took over a nightmare of a year to get them evicted. The bank even offered them $3,000.00 to leave. They turned that down, of course. Why take that when they could live there for free? It's heartbreaking to watch our country going to hell in a handbasket. On a bright note, the house was flipped once it sold, and my new neighbors are a nice young couple.
i know of a state where those people would have been shot. her life was in danger by strangers in her own home.
In Canada...the Toronto police advised car owners to " leave your car fob near the door to prevent further violence ". Do not become Canada, we have NO self defense rights. This woman had the deed in her hands, this is the unofficial redistribution of private property.
Do the Canadian politicians also do that? I somehow DOUBT it.
