Further on John Coleman, he only played about three season's before suffering a knee injury that at the time was career ending whereas nowadays it would likely be six months or less. Another thing with Coleman was that he apparantly was so exciting to watch that each quarter the crowd would follow him from one end of the ground to the other.

As a person who has been to three NRL grand finals and many NRL games..I know why state of origin worked for league. I was playing squash in clump Rd Mt Gravatt Brisbane..1980 Brisbane was not like WA SA Vic.....it never had big crowds at football like the other cities it was car's parked around the ground like country football in South Australia.Western Australia Victoria.. Valleys.. South's who mal meninga played for.. Wynnum manly. The first State of origin copied from the AFL was Brisbane's first ever big crowd at a football game! NSW were only half hearted about the concept so Queensland kept beating them that fired NSW up the rest is history! The reason why AFL fan's didn't like it the AFL origin. There is nothing bigger than your club Collingwood Carlton Essendon Richmond ..160 year's a brother hood where you want your Ashes laid down! They didn't want their best players injured over line's on a map!

Look at when the Crows joined and when they stopped AFL state of origin. Ultimately the Adelaide Crows were created to be South Australia. Look at the colours. But it would have been better if that team was never created. Norwood and Port Adelaide could have been the two SA AFL sides and State of Origin would still be a thing in that sport. But as you say the clubs are more important to the people. But seriously if you look at soccer and basketball there are great clubs but they also play national team matches. The same thing with ice hockey. Australian Football clubs just don't have to worry about losing players to injury in representation matches. From the point of view of the Adelaide Crows they are rivals with everyone interstate, but in reality they are rivals with Port Adelaide. Brisbane Lions and Collingwood are definitely rivals now. And that's not even including the Collingwood - Fitzroy part of the rivalry. But remember that the time that the Adelaide Crows destroyed the state of origin concept was before 1997. The year that Port Adelaide was admitted to the AFL and the first time Adelaide Crows won the AFL. But state of origin was gone. Adelaide Crows have won the AFL and they didn't want anything to stop them. Kudos to the Brisbane Broncos club for not doing the same thing. 👍

However, do think that PT Adelaide somehow got a raw deal . They were/are the most successful team in probably the oldest league in the country. That should have carried more weight. The women's league is really gaining momentum and is changing the junior leagues for the better, so so so many really talented girls that will potentially push the league and definitely improve club culture across our country. Personally have been a coach and a president of a NSW club in a predominately rugby league area having the women's league has created a massive positive for the junior leagues and future of the game.

Plus crowd! Just the game last week. No final just a normal game 90.000! Professor Robert Manning Clarke said that the AFL/VFL was the first Sport in modern times to attract large crowds in the early 1900s in Melbourne Australia. That's very cool!
Wills didn't create Aussie Rules, he was just part of a group who drew up the first rules. But he's credited with being the person who was the original impetus for codifying a local football game. Nor was the game inspired by marngrook. It was a local variation of the different ball games being played in public schools in England where Wills and others were educated (Wills himself was educated at Rugby School). Apart from Wills living in an area where marngrook was reportedly played, there’s no evidence * whatsoever * that it influenced or inspired the original Aussie Rules drawn up in the 1850s. The only real similarity with marngrook is leaping up to catch the ball, but that didn't become a part of the game until much later when kicking became more prevalent. The link to marngrook is part urban myth and large part recent wishful thinking presented nowadays by some as fact.

Do you realise that the game we see today looks very different from the 1850s version? It was more like rugby as it was then played, which was itself different than the rugby of today. Wills literally went to Rugby School and played the game there. At this time, there were already versions of these sort of ball games being played in Melbourne but before each game the two sides would agree on what the rules would be. Wills merely suggested settling a set of common rules, and was but one member of the little group who drew up those first rules. As a matter of record, they went over the set of rules they knew of from four English schools. There is absolutely zero suggestion from anyone that marngrook influenced anything. All of Wills' own rules suggestions (he was reported to have favoured the rugby rules) weren't even taken up.

Only issue with it being a night GF (in 2020, and Twilight in 2021) is that it's non-traditional. GF is always played at 2:30PM on Saturday. There is a big push to change that, but there's a strong voice of traditionalists hat push back strongly against that.
The main push for a night GF comes from television broadcasters who can make more money from a night GF. They then offer more money to the AFL which gets that organisation behind the push but the sports fan base is almost unanimous against the push for a night GF.
i find it funny that a lot of the people who wanted a night grand final quickly changed back to wanting it to be in the day after we actually had one at night. the only ones who really think its better are the broadcasters who want more money. to the average fan it is not a better product being at night considering a lot of people generally plan a whole day around it.
As much as I would love the story of marngrook being the origin of Australian Football I don't accept it. Sadly, there is little evidence to support this theory. The fact is that between 1830 and 1850 approx 1500-2,000 Aboriginals were massacred in Victoria. The white man did not think the black man had much to offer. This was colonial times and everything we did or thought had it's origin in Britain. Tom Wills attended the Rugby School in England for six years from 1850, and in his final year was Captain of Football. He travelled the UK extensively and watched Irish migrants playing Gaelic Football in Liverpool. He was so impressed by the game that he wrote a letter to his father stating that Australia should have 'a game of it's own.' The English public schools all had their own games, however the past and present students believed that the Rugby Game was superior to the games played at Eton, Harrow etc. This led to the rules of the Rugby Game being published English newspapers in 1825 and 1833 to promote the game. The rules were codified in 1845 and thereafter simply known as Rugby. These rules clearly outline how to claim a 'mark' and state the dimensions of the oval shaped ball to be used. On his return to Australia Wills followed his dream of a uniquely Australian game and this included the coin toss (Rugby) the handball (Gaelic Football) and names for particular positions. Terms like Ruck (Rugby) were also introduced, as well as the oval shaped ball, which were first made by a bootmaker named Gilbert in the English village of Rugby. So, to my mind there is more evidence to support the Rugby/Gaelic Football augment than a mangrook origin, although Wills did see Indigenous men in the Geelong area playing the game. AFL as we know it is fast, skilful and entertaining and is certainly a unique game which I have enjoyed playing and watching. Sadly, for some, it is a hybrid game and reflects the Aussie talent for taking the best the world has to offer and making it in something different. I also acknowledge the contribution of indigenous women and men to the game.
Well done champ. I think that last point in the doco is absolute crap. In those them good olden days a player on the mark could do windmills and jumping jacks while standing on the mark. Now, that is untoward. Ahem.
Another reason why the video is misleading: Tom Wills did not create the game after observing aboriginal kids playing Marngrook. There is a possibility that he was influenced by marngrook in some way, but there’s no evidence for that. In fact, the game was originally created by Wills and two other men. Together, they had strong knowledge of early versions of rugby and Gaelic football (and probably soccer) from the UK, and you can see the influence from both in Australian football.

That view of Melbourne you commented on is a view of the city from Albert Park Lake, where the Formula 1 Grand Prix is held. The other city with the bouses on canals is Gold Coast. It's a bit like Miami. A lot of the vision is only loosely connected to the commentary. The guy punching the other player that you said deserved suspension was Barry Hall and this was not the event in the 1950s mentioned by the narrator. Unsurprisingly, Barry Hall took up boxing after retiring from football. The Grand Final is usually played on a Saturday afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, so the game during the pandemic in Brisbane at night was a break with tradition. The stand rule was a change that the AFL introduced to try to improve the flow and speed of the game. Up until then, the player standing the mark (the spot were a mark had been taken or a free kick awarded) was allowed to move laterally (but not forwards) to attempt to smother a kick at an angle. The AfL wanted to open up the game, to increase the chance of a player passing to a team mate, so they decided that the player on the mark had to stand like a statue and not move sideways. There were examples of players barely moving on the mark and having a 50 m penalty, a significant disadvantage, paid against them. It also looks a bit silly having a player stand to attention while the player with the ball can just run around them. Just a suggestion: I think it is a bit disrespectful to your audience to keep yawning in your videos. If you are bored by it, at least pretend that you are interested.
The video is a little misleading. The 1896 VFL was not born of the earlier VFA. The VFA and VFL coexisted for more than 100 years, and originally they were in competition as to which league was stronger. The VFL became the stronger league and the VFA slowly died out.
@@RobertJW no, that didn’t happen until recently. The VFL was a breakaway league which lured teams from the VFA when it started in 1897. Both the VFA and VFL coexisted for over 100 years. The AFL change occurred in 1990.
And as for the women’s league yes the talent is actually getting better but still needs to be improved also the grounds the women are made to play on are clearly to big for the girls yes they need to be smaller so then the quality is scoring and skill gets better and no this isn’t sexist it’s the truth everyone says it online
First Australian rugby league State of Origin was in 1980 although 3 year's after Aussie Rule's it continues to be a major success. Without a doubt the biggest sporting rivalry in Australia & if not the entire world of sports it's definitely in the top 3. Aussie rule's State of origin was a flop which always pailed in comparison.
It wasn’t a flop it was huge. It just became unsustainable because there are more than just 2 states involved which would compromise the season. Also the AFL is a giant true national competition that draws massive crowds every week. It doesn’t need rep football to elevate it to be something relevant the way the small time micky mouse rugby competitions do
Lol @"AFL State of Origin was a flop." - that must be why people keep calling for a return. The problem was (at least) 2 fold - you needed to coordinate a mini-tournament between Vic, SA and WA (acknowledging they were ignoring talent from elsewhere) in the middle of a busy season; and clubs became concerned that they were at a disadvantage if their best players got injured during the State of Origin. In the 80s and 90s the VFL expanded to become the AFL, and there was also a view that with representation from each state, maybe the state of origin was moot. So yes, AFL State of Origin got wrapped up (after more than 20 years), but i definitely wasn't a flop. NRL's State of origin is a great rivalry for sue - and it's impressive how it has grown and survived (but I think the rules around players' "origin" is a lot looser and you can get players play for both sides at different times). Fundamentally, NRL Origin is simply a rivalry between QLD and NSW that is artificially forced on a football field (which unless I misunderstand the criteria seems to have lost too much concept of 'origin').

No final just a normal game 90.000! Professor Robert Manning Clarke said that the AFL/VFL was the first Sport in modern times to attract large crowds in the early 1900s in Melbourne Australia. That's very cool!
Wills didn't create Aussie Rules, he was just part of a group who drew up the first rules. But he's credited with being the person who was the original impetus for codifying a local football game. Nor was the game inspired by marngrook. It was a local variation of the different ball games being played in public schools in England where Wills and others were educated (Wills himself was educated at Rugby School). Apart from Wills living in an area where marngrook was reportedly played, there’s no evidence * whatsoever * that it influenced or inspired the original Aussie Rules drawn up in the 1850s. The only real similarity with marngrook is leaping up to catch the ball, but that didn't become a part of the game until much later when kicking became more prevalent. The link to marngrook is part urban myth and large part recent wishful thinking presented nowadays by some as fact.

Do you realise that the game we see today looks very different from the 1850s version? It was more like rugby as it was then played, which was itself different than the rugby of today. Wills literally went to Rugby School and played the game there. At this time, there were already versions of these sort of ball games being played in Melbourne but before each game the two sides would agree on what the rules would be. Wills merely suggested settling a set of common rules, and was but one member of the little group who drew up those first rules. As a matter of record, they went over the set of rules they knew of from four English schools. There is absolutely zero suggestion from anyone that marngrook influenced anything. All of Wills' own rules suggestions (he was reported to have favoured the rugby rules) weren't even taken up.

He was also just one member of the resulting committee. There is absolutely zero evidence - as you’ve helpfully noted - that Wills or anyone else gave marngrook a moment’s thought. They didn’t even listen to him! The original game contained nothing that wasn’t already part of the English ball games they were already playing - they all contained running and catching. So does American football! Obviously influenced by marngrook! 🤣
The “jumping” bit we think of today wasn’t even a part of the original Aussie game, which more resembled a rolling scrimmage. Kicking was far less prevalent, too. Comparing marngrook to the game played today is absurd ‘evidence’ of what a bunch of English-school educated men thought nearly 170 years ago.

Only issue with it being a night GF (in 2020, and Twilight in 2021) is that it's non-traditional. GF is always played at 2:30PM on Saturday. There is a big push to change that, but there's a strong voice of traditionalists hat push back strongly against that.
The main push for a night GF comes from television broadcasters who can make more money from a night GF. They then offer more money to the AFL which gets that organisation behind the push but the sports fan base is almost unanimous against the push for a night GF.
i find it funny that a lot of the people who wanted a night grand final quickly changed back to wanting it to be in the day after we actually had one at night.
the only ones who really think its better are the broadcasters who want more money. to the average fan it is not a better product being at night considering a lot of people generally plan a whole day around it.
Well hopefully it stays at 2:30pm on Saturdays. I'll be able to watch it live if so! The night games are too late for me over in Canada.

As much as I would love the story of marngrook being the origin of Australian Football I don't accept it. Sadly, there is little evidence to support this theory. The fact is that between 1830 and 1850 approx 1500-2,000 Aboriginals were massacred in Victoria. The white man did not think the black man had much to offer. This was colonial times and everything we did or thought had it's origin in Britain. Tom Wills attended the Rugby School in England for six years from 1850, and in his final year was Captain of Football. He travelled the UK extensively and watched Irish migrants playing Gaelic Football in Liverpool. He was so impressed by the game that he wrote a letter to his father stating that Australia should have 'a game of it's own.' The English public schools all had their own games, however the past and present students believed that the Rugby Game was superior to the games played at Eton, Harrow etc. This led to the rules of the Rugby Game being published English newspapers in 1825 and 1833 to promote the game. The rules were codified in 1845 and thereafter simply known as Rugby. These rules clearly outline how to claim a 'mark' and state the dimensions of the oval shaped ball to be used. On his return to Australia Wills followed his dream of a uniquely Australian game and this included the coin toss (Rugby) the handball (Gaelic Football) and names for particular positions. Terms like Ruck (Rugby) were also introduced, as well as the oval shaped ball, which were first made by a bootmaker named Gilbert in the English village of Rugby. So, to my mind there is more evidence to support the Rugby/Gaelic Football augment than a mangrook origin, although Wills did see Indigenous men in the Geelong area playing the game. AFL as we know it is fast, skilful and entertaining and is certainly a unique game which I have enjoyed playing and watching. Sadly, for some, it is a hybrid game and reflects the Aussie talent for taking the best the world has to offer and making it in something different. I also acknowledge the contribution of indigenous women and men to the game.

Another reason why the video is misleading: Tom Wills did not create the game after observing aboriginal kids playing Marngrook.
There is a possibility that he was influenced by marngrook in some way, but there’s no evidence for that. In fact, the game was originally created by Wills and two other men.
Together, they had strong knowledge of early versions of rugby and Gaelic football (and probably soccer) from the UK, and you can see the influence from both in Australian football.

That view of Melbourne you commented on is a view of the city from Albert Park Lake, where the Formula 1 Grand Prix is held. The other city with the bouses on canals is Gold Coast. It's a bit like Miami. A lot of the vision is only loosely connected to the commentary. The guy punching the other player that you said deserved suspension was Barry Hall and this was not the event in the 1950s mentioned by the narrator. Unsurprisingly, Barry Hall took up boxing after retiring from football. The Grand Final is usually played on a Saturday afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, so the game during the pandemic in Brisbane at night was a break with tradition. The stand rule was a change that the AFL introduced to try to improve the flow and speed of the game. Up until then, the player standing the mark (the spot were a mark had been taken or a free kick awarded) was allowed to move laterally (but not forwards) to attempt to smother a kick at an angle. The AfL wanted to open up the game, to increase the chance of a player passing to a team mate, so they decided that the player on the mark had to stand like a statue and not move sideways. There were examples of players barely moving on the mark and having a 50 m penalty, a significant disadvantage, paid against them. It also looks a bit silly having a player stand to attention while the player with the ball can just run around them. Just a suggestion: I think it is a bit disrespectful to your audience to keep yawning in your videos. If you are bored by it, at least pretend that you are interested.

The 1896 VFL was not born of the earlier VFA.
The VFA and VFL coexisted for more than 100 years, and originally they were in competition as to which league was stronger.
The VFL became the stronger league and the VFA slowly died out.
The VFA renamed itself to become the VFL when the 1896 VFL went national and became the AFL.

The VFL was a breakaway league which lured teams from the VFA when it started in 1897.
Both the VFA and VFL coexisted for over 100 years.
The AFL change occurred in 1990.

First Australian rugby league State of Origin was in 1980 although 3 year's after Aussie Rule's it continues to be a major success. Without a doubt the biggest sporting rivalry in Australia & if not the entire world of sports it's definitely in the top 3. Aussie rule's State of origin was a flop which always pailed in comparison.
It wasn’t a flop it was huge. It just became unsustainable because there are more than just 2 states involved which would compromise the season. Also the AFL is a giant true national competition that draws massive crowds every week. It doesn’t need rep football to elevate it to be something relevant the way the small time micky mouse rugby competitions do
Lol @"AFL State of Origin was a flop." - that must be why people keep calling for a return. The problem was (at least) 2 fold - you needed to coordinate a mini-tournament between Vic, SA and WA (acknowledging they were ignoring talent from elsewhere) in the middle of a busy season; and clubs became concerned that they were at a disadvantage if their best players got injured during the State of Origin. In the 80s and 90s the VFL expanded to become the AFL, and there was also a view that with representation from each state, maybe the state of origin was moot.
So yes, AFL State of Origin got wrapped up (after more than 20 years), but i definitely wasn't a flop.
NRL's State of origin is a great rivalry for sue - and it's impressive how it has grown and survived (but I think the rules around players' "origin" is a lot looser and you can get players play for both sides at different times). Fundamentally, NRL Origin is simply a rivalry between QLD and NSW that is artificially forced on a football field (which unless I misunderstand the criteria seems to have lost too much concept of 'origin').
