I liked hearing the history on Johnson City. As I'm moving there very soon. I have family who live in Johnson City.

It's interesting to see the changes in downtown in the 4 years since this video was posted. Some of the buildings that were vacant then now have tenants for the first time in decades.

I was trying to see if the large old building close to Boyd Street was in the video if anyone knows. I was 5 yrs old when I lived on Boyd in a green colored house. I will try looking at maps. Tipton Haynes were my family as well as Gouge. Thank you for the video and history.

Hi! I noticed you did not give credit for where you got the pictures. They are not supposed to be used without permission and/or acknowledgement of where they came from.
Also, why wasn't the John Sevier Hotel included? To give you a little insight here - T. A. Faw was in competition with Henry Johnson and had a store on Brushy Creek as well as Henry Johnson. The location of the Munsey Church is across the street from where the Faw store was. When T. A. Faw passed away, he left the store, house and land to his daughter Sally, who later sold the property to a group who ended up developing the land and building a $500,000 hotel (Original logbook and many pictures in the Archives of Appalachia).
This hotel is where allegedly Al Capone also resided (3rd floor), not just at Montrose. There was a train station next to the hotel where allegedly Al Capone got off and went onto the hotel (there is now a parking garage on the spot). The town continued to be a train town, yet as the automobile became more popular, the trains slowed down. In the 70s, the highway that was built a couple of blocks away from the little downtown area was the final cause in the loss of train usage (although many freight still run through here). The hotel lost its grandeur and became run down. It was sold and the owners had the hotel rooms redone into apartments for the elderly. The building still stands (is the tallest in all of Johnson City) and now also houses the disabled.
The building will soon be 100 years old. The Johnson City Development Agency (JCDA) bought the building and is currently working on relocating the residents so that they can do a major rehaul for the downtown revitalization.
Also, sadly, you did not include the Mountain Home VA base here - which is what this town is about (not just ETSU). It began - of course - as a soldiers home I believe before the Normal School (in the same time frame)
Sadly, Johnson City has been infiltrated with many homeless and street people (2 different groups). JCDA really does not know what to do at the moment and want to move them out - but it is hard as larger cities send their people our way, we are becoming more destitute and overwhelmed. I pray something happens to help these people and for the bigger cities to stop sending their people as we are not able to help those already here much now that the added people have been brought in.

Goodness I just read about it. I'm glad you mentioned it. I will stay away from Jamaican Ginger it spoke of. Wow I bet people couldn't figure that one out at first. Thanks for sharing.

One of the buildings pictured here more than once is the one in the background of my profile pic! Well it was while i am writing this anyway.
I wish you could've gotten footage before the whole CV19. We use to have live music at Founders Park Fridays at 5pm during the warm parts of the year and street festivals. I miss how alive the downtown used to be last year compared to 2020 it is a shame. Thanks for the video!

I have worked with the Archives for years, as well as talked to Alan Bridwell who has a lot of the historic info, but not once has there been any mention of this alleged picture.
