✏️ Protestant Speaks at LDS History Conference

  • A lot can happen in a year, and that’s certainly the case with this channel.
A little over a year ago, I walked through the door to my very first ward visit to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a lifetime Protestant, I didn't know anything walking in.
There were similarities to my lifetime beliefs, but also very different concepts. But the perplexing takeaway was the reception from members and missionaries -  and especially follow-up. It was the best impression of any church I had visited as a first-time visitor after more than 100 documented church visits-leaving me wonder why most churches rely on email communication as opposed to the missionary model.
After that visit, a lot of doors opened that accelerated my interest in the Latter-day Saint pioneers and the resulting complex history. I was blessed to attend different Restoration churches that had split from the mainstream LDS Church (i.e. Community of Christ, The Church of Jesus Christ, and Strangite Church), and strangely because of that, this channel became a point-of-reference to compare and contrast different Book of Mormon-believing churches.
For this year's John Whitmer Historical Association held in Fredericksburg, Texas - the idea was floated around to include a session featuring RUclips podcasters and their engagement with various Latter-day Saint branches. Steven Pynakker from @MormonBookReviews , Rick Bennett of @GospelTangents , and I accepted the invitation to present our personal experiences in front of an audience full of professors, scholars, and historians.
Here's a look into how the event turned out.

Wait, Community of Christ wasn't welcoming, remember--so how could you say all the ones from that movement? I'm not CofC but I've heard the congregations in Utah are exploding because they attract ex-latter-day-saints. They also have a university in Iowa and I imagine that congregation will be totally different. Maybe they deserve a do-over?

Great episode. It was wonderful to share with you at the JWHA conference. Your presentation with Rick Bennett from Gospel Tangents and Steve Pynakker from Mormon Book Reviews is one that will be a favorite for many. I also noticed the beauty of the group. As a first time attendee, I was surprised how little what church I belonged to meant to anyone. We were a group of Mormon history lovers.
    Well done, my friend.😊

WHY DO LDS REJECT GOD OF BIBLE & BELIEVE IN FALSE GOD OF Joseph Smith?

NO trace of the “Two million Jaredites slain” (Ether 15:2), with iron, brass, breast-plates, shields, and armor. It would be impossible for these millions of dead warriors in armor to leave no trace.
NO trace of the great city Zarahemla- it would be impossible for a city the size of Zarahemla (Alma 5:2; D&C 125:3) to leave no trace.

NO temple like Solomon's described in 2 Nephi 5:16 has ever been found yet biblical temple is easily seen in Jerusalem. If the temple Nephi describes ever existed it could not disappear.
NO Nephite "reformed Egyptian" writings ever found anywhere as it is not even a recognized language anywhere.
NO cities mentioned in the BOM have ever been located (none of 38) anywhere. It would be impossible for them to disappear unless they never existed.
NO evidence: "The whole land was covered with buildings, and the people were as numerous, as it were the sand of the sea." Yet not one ever located. (Mormon 1:7) IMPOSSIBLE for highly advanced civilizations (Jaredites, Nephites) & MILLIONS of people to have vanished.

I'm really close to this part of LDS History. My ancestors followed Lyman White to Texas until later rejoining the main LDS body in Utah. What was really interesting is I grew up in California and a guy in my ward was the descendent of one of the missionaries who came to Texas and invited my ancestors to rejoin the saints in Utah.

David, I look forward to your videos about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and find your candor refreshing. I love seeing The Church through your eyes, and I daresay that you know quite a bit of history that many Church members don't. Thank you for the time you take to search out the accurate history of The Church, and to present it respectfully here on your channel. I look forward to more videos from you, and enjoy hearing your perspective. Perhaps once these 52 weeks are finished, you could start a new channel named "52 Doctrinal Topics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 52 Weeks" since you seem to have a sincere desire to learn so much about Jesus' restored Church. Such videos would also help to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world, via all of your subscribers. Thank you for all you do.

It finally dawned on me the other day why latter-day saint churches were awkward for you, you went to a family ward instead of a singles' ward (congregation)! That would be an entirely different experience. Some people hate singles' wards because they are overwhelmingly female, and they want to feel more nurtured because regular wards do that better, and if people are in the singles' ward they want to get married and they are self-conscious of that the whole time (which makes it harder to focus on one's relationship with God). On the other hand as a married person I think the singles' wards have a lot more fun and attention from the church headquarters because they don't want to lose them. Once they are married the church takes a deep breath and says, okay you're good, and one's all where's all the attention and programs that bent over backwards for my needs? Fun times though. I wonder, how many Christian churches are doing a separate singles focus? Do they have separate congregations for them? If so you should try a congregation of some kind that focuses on those who aren't married and see what happens. I know the church is considering a pilot where people under a certain age regardless of their marital status go to church together and people above go together, but it's just a pilot, it doesn't mean it will happen. There may be some barriers attending a singles' ward though because predators and people who are already married sneak into them and they want to guard against that--but I may be wrong. They have two categories of singles' wards, the more balanced and vibrant 18-30 year olds called YSAs or young single adults, and 31-45 category--which has the 2/3 to 1/3 ratio and has a little more stress in it because the women are competing and the men can't figure out why they can't find anyone despite an imbalanced ratio.

Thanks for your videos! I hope you have a wonderful experience in studying God's word in the Book of Mormon, and that you find great truth in it that strengthens you spiritually and helps you draw closer to Jesus Christ. I believe that anyone who seeks truth in sincerity will.
It's only mildly related to this particular video, but I have a question for you from things you've expressed previously. Other Christian religions have a practice referred to as the Eucharist or Communion, which is similar at least in appearance and scriptural origin to the ordinance referred to as the Sacrament in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which I am a member. I remember you saying that you'd had at least one off-putting experience with a church where you wanted to participate in the Communion they offered but were denied (due to your lack of membership in the church, if I remember correctly). What is the meaning of Communion for you? Why do you do it and why is it important for you? I don't want to influence your thoughts too much by saying it, but I can tell you why we participate in the Sacrament: it is a renewal of the covenant to follow Christ that we make through baptism, and an opportunity to recommit ourselves to those covenants. There are specified words in the prayer we offer as part of the ordinance that state the purpose as well; we pray to God the Father and "witness unto [Him] that [we] are willing to take upon [us] the name of [His] Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given [us], that [we] may always have his Spirit to be with [us]." Again, why and how is Communion meaningful for you? I'd be very happy with a response either in text here or vocally in a future video, if you wouldn't mind providing either.

NO wheat, no goats, no steel found in the Americas, no metal smelting furnaces, no metal armor, no steel swords, no cattle, no chariot parts, no brass (Mosiah 8:10) no evidence of the listed Kings in BOM, no Jewish relics or Jewish Temples from supposed Jews, no metal plates like Nephites supposedly used, no middle eastern seeds growing, "which were brought from the land of Jerusalem ... and grew exceedingly" 1 Nephi 18:24
There is NO archaeological, anthropological, topological, linguistic, botanical or dna evidence to support the Book of Mormon. LDS anthropologist Dee Green: “The first myth we need to eliminate is that BOM archaeology exists” conceding 20 years of research “left us empty-handed” (Green 1969 p. 77)

Jesus came to glorify the Father
People talk about Jesus’ divinity without ever acknowledging the one who gave him his divinity and authority (Matthew 28:18-19). God is Jesus’ Father, and Jesus is God’s only begotten Son. They are not the same entity, but they are always in agreement because Jesus does and says everything that his Father tells him.
Jesus was born without an earthly father. He was sent here to tell us about the will of his heavenly Father, not himself. Jesus is the manifestation of God’s power and spirit in the flesh, but he is not God himself. The Father works in and through Jesus. If you truly cherish Jesus, then you will glorify the Father just as Jesus glorifies Him. We must glorify the Almighty Father, who gave Jesus life (John 5:26), the entire revelation (Revelation 1:1), and all power in heaven and on earth. Without the Father, there is no Son; and without Jesus, there is no means of salvation for us.
“For GOD so loved the world, that HE gave HIS only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him (Jesus) should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
