❄️ Protestant Attends the Latter Day Saint (Strangite) Church

  • While doing #52in52, one of the most surprising aspects has been the overwhelming kindness of Latter-day Saints. As a lifetime Protestant, my curiosity was only compounded by the divine claims of Joseph Smith and relentless faith of the LDS pioneers, who literally made a desert bloom in a 19th century re-telling of Exodus.
When Joseph Smith was martyred in 1844, it led to a succession crisis for leadership. The vast majority followed Brigham Young to Utah, but there were a few who originally sided with others who claimed to have legitimacy and splintered off. The most curious was James Strang.
Strang lived in southern Wisconsin, where he converted to Mormonism and was baptized by Joseph Smith. Strang claimed he received the "Letter of Appointment" from Smith days before his murder, thus naming him new leader. Strang went on to claim he had been ordained by a host of angelic beings, citing Hebrews 7:7 that the "lesser cannot ordain the greater." He would also uncover buried metallic plates in front of witnesses, both Strangites and non-Saints. Those within the LDS inner circle scoffed at Strang's claims, but early on, reportedly 12,000 followed Strang versus Young's 50,000.
The Strangites would move to Voree (meaning "Garden of Peace"), then expand to Beaver Island in Michigan. The Rise and Fall of Strang could be linked here, as Strang introduced polygamy and declared himself spiritual king of the church - the nickname "Beaver Island's Mormon King" has floated around, but that wasn't true. Gaining enemies, Strang was shot in the back by two dissenters, and although he had enough time to name a successor before he died, it didn't happen.
After Strang's death and no directive for leadership, what happened to the Strangites on Beaver Island was sickening. They were rounded up, property confiscated, and were shipped out by steamboat. They would be scattered throughout the docks of Lake Michigan between docks from Chicago through Green Bay. Those on missions who returned to family were left clueless what happened. Leaderless and scattered, most Strangites joined another group (RLDS, now Community of Christ), and those who remained loyal to the memory of James Strang have remained small ever since. So the belief is only Smith and Strang were prophets (since an angel must ordain), and now the Strangites represent the church in a probationary state until the last days.
For Week 39, went to the only remaining remnant church building of the Strangites. Through networking, I got in contact with their historian who invited me into his home to share the history before attending service. Though small, it's a friendly and healthy church. Despite having radically different beliefs, I can't say enough good things about the Strangites accepting me for this Saturday service to learn more.

One interesting thing about the succession after Joseph Smith died, since, at that time there was no clear method, anyone who made a claim got up in from of the collective church and preached. Brigham Young, the senior apostle, is said to have his countenance change and he looked and sounded like Joseph Smith. Now, the senior apostle becomes the prophet and president of the church. You can hear him speak at general conference twice a year in Utah in April and October. It is free. Welcome. It is quite an event.

Tonight I watched your visit to the Episcopal Church. What a beautiful building. Very sad to see declining attendance in many churches. Is it the church? Or is it the people? Or is it a combination? The Bible has many prophecies about our times. Many scriptures about a refreshing time, or a restitution of former doctrines, also John in Revelations saw “ an angel flying thru Heaven having the everlasting gospel.” And were also told that people will be ever learning and “Never able to come to a knowledge of the truth”. Keep up the good work. I’m enjoying learning more and more by watching your videos.

I've read the letter and studied the history of James Strang, thoroughly. James Strang joined the LDS church about 3-months before Joseph Smith's death and persuaded Joseph to allow Strang to start a branch (small congregation) in Wisconsin with the saints there. Joseph wrote a letter confirming James Strang will lead the church in that part of Wisconsin as its branch president, but never appointed Strang as an Apostle, or any other leader of the church. Joseph had already confirmed ALL of the rights and authority of the church on the 12 Apostles, which all 12 Apostles at the time confirmed happened, teaching them that when he dies, they will lead the church as they did in Jesus' day, with the senior Apostle as their president. Strang claimed to have seen an angel when nobody believed he should lead the church, which changed to angels, but none of his followers ever saw one or experienced any miracles of any kind, and Strang was ultimately seen as a fraud by his own followers. I met a Strangite about 18-years ago, who told me there were only a couple of dozen members left in their church, so interesting to see there's still a few. We're all trying to follow Jesus Christ the best we can, we just need to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and love. Great videos!

Strang was initially against polygamy and that that drew a number of members to follow him. When he reversed himself on that a lot of people left and it went downhill from there. I personally know someone who is a direct descendant of James Strang. Her father joined the main LDS church as a teenager. She is probably the very first descendant of James Strang to be married in the temple.

I so love you sharing your cardinal experiences. For me, it’s been the hawk. There’s something about seeing a hawk that has always stirred my soul. But in the last 15 years, God has been using that to bring me comfort in moments when I needed to know that I was being seen and heard and loved. I would be driving or just sitting on my front porch or wherever, struggling with what ever trial, I was currently dealing with, and I would see a hawk soaring high above me in the sky- usually, circling above my area. Each time, I would know that my Savior was aware of me, and wanted to reassure me that I was not alone in that moment.
God knows us so well individually, He knows what we will identify with, and loves us enough to use those things to remind us that He is there-always.
Thank you for this amazing journey that you are sharing. I’ve been learning so much since discovering these videos recently. The issue with these churches is: once you find out the book of Mormon is true, you still need to figure out which of the dozens restoration churches is true, because after Joseph's death, there was no clear successor, as the only defined successor would have been Hyrum. So this starts a second round of necessary inquiry the LDS church does not want you to know about.

BOB A loves "I don't want to convert. I don't want to be converted. I want to learn." Yes. Yes. Yes. Thank you David.
Usually I wait til the end of the video to comment, but I had to stop the tape and get those in there.
Wow awesome story. Thank you for the history and background. Several years ago, for about a two month period, I felt strongly impressed to poke me head around the restoration community. I did some light research of many many groups and then checked out several blogs and chats. I found sadness. It made me sad. So much commentary on how these various groups where continuing to split or dwindle like the shakers, and they disagreed with each other on this and that, but they all (these commenters I read in this two month period) agreed on one thing - they absolutely did not like the mainstream church or Brigham Young at all and would say some things that were nastier than what you might hear from a typical Southern Evangelical about "Mormons". I was sad that such a perceived driving force behind some of these frustrated folks was a grudge or some negative relationship toward another organization. There needed to be some kind of healing.; I must assume there still needs to be.
As far as the Restoration, for me it is pretty logically equational that if the true church is restored then it must fit precisely Daniel's description of the rock cut without hands that doesn't diminish or stagnate but continues to fill the whole Earth. John finishes that story, until the Groom shows up. Anyway, my two cents. Thank you, David. Love yeh, man.

As a non-Mormon UU atheist I've heard a lot about the biggest LDS denomination from both current and former members but I didn't know much about the other branches besides skimming the Wikipedia pages about them (I've heard the Community of Christ is the most liberal one and that it's basically the UUs had they not abandoned Christianity, for that I've wanted to visit the closest church that is located at the town a couple of hours away from me).
I've read most of the Book of Mormon (alongside other sacred texts like the Qu'ran) and although it didn't make me a believer I found parts of it fascinating, I appreciate that you made content regarding the other branches that may be hard to find elsewhere.

Only reason I ask is because I visited a Mormon temple yesterday (just driving around it didn’t go inside) and also had a cardinal land on my backyard fence right when I left to go there. Once I got there I had very strong deja Vu. I don’t believe I agree with many of their teachings. But there is a strange pull to it.

The are several splinter groups who "claim" to do that, but also choose to ignore things they aren't comfortable with. 2) 1834: the church was renamed to "The Church of the Latter Day Saints", probably because there were other churches from the restoration movement with an identical name. Note that Jesus Christ was not part of this name!

Good one. Maybe you could learn more than one item of the Mormon Church…. Like that none of Joseph Smith’s sealings where sexual marriages. They were a way to get the women into the celestial kingdom as a woman would have to be sealed to a worthy man. That also is why he sealed other unworthy men’s wives to himself. It has been proven now through DNA that there are not any unexpected children from Joseph Smith. He was not perfect just as many of the prophets in the Old Testament had trials, temptations and thing to learn it was the same with Joseph Smith. The only perfect one on earth was our Savior Jesus the Christ. I can send the missionaries over if you would like?
