Don't think 'tactile switches' feel like browns. They don't. The clear based switches have FAR more and better feeling tactility. Alps based switches have even better tactility than that. I hate that so many people 'don't like tactile switches' because they base their judgement on the craptacular brown switch, and think they all are 'the same'.
Fair enough :) Totally get that. Linears and lightly tactile aren't my cup of tea either. I like strong tactility or tactility + click myself. It increases confidence when typing, instead of constantly wondering if that last key you presssed registered or not if not looking. I like to avoid bottoming out when possible. I type 8-12 hours a day as a programmer, and bottoming out every keypress does lead to fatigue, and possible even long term damage to joints in the hand, but that is debatable. Oh and it just feels satisfying. Like popping bubble wrap :)

Interesting to see a couple modern switches on this list when the clicky list was nothing but vintage switches. Wonder why it seems like nobody can make a decent modern clicky switch. Probably Kailh's navy switches are about as good as it gets so long as you're OK with the heavy weight...
I have the solution, companies need to be willing to put money into the switches, rather than focusing mass production, thats what hurt the clicky switches the most I believe.
To be honest, the thing that killed off mechanical keyboards was the falling prices of computers. Back then a $900 keyboard was still only a fraction of the cost of a system - no wonder companies could afford to sink some money into a quality product. Budget computers almost invariably had really shit keyboards, though.
Absolutely true, just compare the ZX Spectrum to a 5150 and the difference is night and day, hopefully we don't get a keyboard like that one back as a mainstream desktop board.

I don't think 'smooth' is actually all that a linear switch needs, but maybe that is precisely why I don't like linear switches :P My xmit keyboard (ace pad hall effect) simply has no perceivable friction once you lube the stem. None whatsoever. Like typing on pillows of air. That is, until you bottom out, which is like hitting a brick wall followed by a clack that will wake the dead. I think most of the noisiness has to do with the hollow design as well as the minimal stem stabilization contact area to minimize friction. They kind of just float in there all rattly.
Richard Smith Personally, for linear switches, my top priorities are smoothness and weighting. Because of the lack of travel features to mask it, scratchiness stands out a lot on linear switches.

You wouldn't be able to solder into anything else anyway, as the optical sensing assembly requires a completely different PCB and power settings than do electromechanical switches. I know you largley find MX style switches to not be very interesting, but if you want a very smooth modern linear you should try Gateron optical yellow, red and black. Even without lube they're smoother than anything I have ever used.
Lubed black alps and put one switch without the plate back together by accident, endet up liking them so much that I removed every plate. Amazing linear!
They are not as friction-free as most of us had expected considering other Hall effect switches, no. However, compared to other switches they're still very smooth, and when lubed it becomes basically friction-free. The Bloody switches are smoother than APT HE, but I don't like the travel characteristics quite as much.

This is true, there is a tiny tactile artefact in the key travel. I think it helps a lot with the keyfeel, it takes away the sterility that other linear switches have.
Chyrosran22 It's quite ironical that Cherry MX brown is hated because of the tactile events, but SKCLs are loved beacause of that. I think the tactility is not about its magnitude, but is about its gradient. Ths tactility of Topre and SKCL is weak, but their long tactile travel make them pleasant.

Just because MX Shit are linear doesn't make them good ones :p .
Chyrosran22 AHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
I don't quite get the thing about linear keyboard switches... Isn't the whole point behind mechanical switches that you get feedback when it actuates?
All I can say is, it took a great linear switch before I "got" it.
Anyone know what keyboard I could look for to find the micro switch hall effects?
What is the board on that last switch? Those key caps are absolutely amazing!
Lux Nox that's a Fujitsu board with a very annoying model number. I nickednamed it the Sanyo, check out its review if you're interested!
is bloody's switch really this good? because their keyboards are so cheap and im very interested on this, is it worth it?
and also, which model of bloody keyboards did you use in this video?
and also last question, is this box red linear version same as good? or this smoothness is only on this looking like mx black version.
Does anyone know which model is this bloody keyboard?
Gateron black switches feel just right to me. Also Kailh box black feel and sound nice, but maybe a bit too heavy
What about Gateron red?
It’s a cheaper version of the cherry one
By far my favorite switch in general at the time of typing this is the Alps Green switch. Aboslute joy to use and listen too. And yes, I do like them way more than Blue Alps even.
I wonder Thomas, you didn't put nor even mention Linear Space Invaders. Do you not like them at all?
No, they're pretty good, I like them. In fact, next week's video is about them! But they are a bit on the stiff side for me, and prone to contamination. Other than that they're very nice actually.
where are the cherry mx browns?
Have you tried Cherry MX Silvers yet?
Nope! I own one, but noty a board.
knew hall effects would clean up. imo the most interesting switch too.
Yeah, they seem virtually made for the purpose.
can you review all your switches?
What are some good switches that are both linear and clicky?
There are none.
Please review the IBM industrial XT keyboard(aka industrial Model F)!!
I wonder if there's going to be a top 5 keycaps list?
Top 1 would be gmk
@@christianalbertcarillo7117 I think gmk are very good, but this is chyrosan, he doesnt really like modern switches and keycaps. He would probably prefer slightly thicker older keycaps. He also probably wouldn't like that they shine eventually because they are abs, and lets face it: 150-250 is a LOT for keycaps. But gmk sorta set that standard
Starting to think that slow motion is fake but I have no proof.
what about the new steeelseries linear electromagnetism switches? i think thats the new end game in linear switches for gamers
How do green Alps compare to yellow Alps?
Biggest difference is the weigh; green is lighter. I hope to show you the more detailed differences at some point, though :) .
I'm very curious what you think about the Wooting One (mostly the blue switch, since I like tactility :p). Do you have any interest in reviewing it?
Very much so, however they've ceased communication for no apparent reason.
Dang. I already commented but what goes. Wooting one used the Flaretech switches if I recall correctly. These same switches are also there in the Gigabyte Aorus K9 (I got one last month). Mine is the "Red" version which is linear non clicky ones. There is also a "Blue" version which has a click (but not at the actuation point which is 0.03 mm).
very good video! i personally really like kailh box black, it may be misleading because youd assume theyd have the same weighting as a mx black switch, but they are really nice and light and have all the benifits of a box switch like youve seen in other videos.
That final typing sound was a bit too scratchy for my tastes..
Alps SKCL switches are technically tactile switches. But I love them.
My top 5 linears
1. Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition Linear Optical Switches
2. Apex Pro omipoint switches
3. Cherry MX Speed Silver/ Razer Yellow
4. Cherry MX Red
5. Cherry MX Silent Red
@wlrdarko opinion dude, I know a lot about mechanical keyboards. You may not like my list but that's just my opinion, in fact this is outdated anyways but still
@wlrdarko I found them pretty good, my friend owns cherry mx reds and they feel nice. Stop thinking I'm inexperienced but I actually am, I own a mechanical keyboard at home, I watch many, many videos, even on the new ones. Leave my opinions alone and I'll leave yours alone, just don't bash mine and call me an 11 year old Fortnite kid. On top of it, adults and teens play fortnite too btw
@wlrdarko hell I even research about some of more obscure and older switches even.
@wlrdarko can you just leave me alone, god
man how did you afford the slow mo camera? that looks damn good.
Thanks for the list (linear ftw)
I know right, it was filmed at 780,000 FPS!
but.. the human eye can't see over 30fps.... 🤔🤔
All I know is that I kinda hate cherry mx black.
Written via cherry mx black.
Awesome slow-mo shot. Funny as hell :)
why do you sound like postal dude
Epic Crispy Slowmo BRO!!!!! ;-)
;D It took some very expensive equipment to film it! :p
What about adomax flaretech b
Great work 😁 could you lube a "scratchy" mx black and test against vi tage unlubed? Tried lubing 100 from my 6gv2 and they became really nice afterwards.
You got me with the slo-mo. 😛
I can predict what will be #1 on the tactile roundup ...
Heheheh, I suspect many people can xD . I'm still not sure about the whole list tbh, it's a very tough one to make, much harder than linear and clicky!
Orange alps?
I really enjoy gateron clears.
mainstream youtubers be like "my favourite is cherry mx red..."
oMG mX rEd IS mY wIFe plZ SPoNsOr!!1!1111
Why isn't Cherry MY on this list?
Why Cherry MX are so popular and expensive if they are not among the best switches?
