This is a really cool swap man good job. I’ve been looking for a swap to put in my scion XB and I think this is the route. I’m gonna get into so much appreciated and thank you. Keep up the good work.
Really cool swap! The only thing you really need to do is get that intake re-routed to the front bumper. I made a custom plumbing to my stock airbox (with K & N filter) and it made a world of difference. It runs almost to the front bumper opening but I cut it short (for wet weather conditions). The warmer the air intake temps, the more the stock ecu pulls timing. Thats why its such a massive difference doing a pull in 100 degree temp vs. 40 degree temps (of course air density is in play, but the ecu hates hot air trust me).
Thanks. I haven't worked on the car in two years, but have recently felt inspired to make a few changes and clean it up. The intake should absolutely be changed up.
@scionnn this is using the Celica GT-S 6 speed gearbox. The shifter shaft/shift selector were swapped for a Matrix XRS assembly to allow the stock XA shift cables to be used. The OEM XA shift box was modified to allow the shifter to move over far enough for reverse, but 6th gear engaged initially with no changes.
@@TheJimBravo im considering doing a stock engine (1nz-fe) modification where im just doing some small upgrades internally on my xB, then throwing a turbo in it. The stock rods are way to thin to withstand the pressure, therefore im also upgrading that to. But i am also considering putting a 2zzge, as i have heard the xB and xA use the chasis, and by eyeballing it, i cant tell a difference between the chassis on the xA and the xB. I will probably do this mod, but thats after i finish getting a low mileage engine, or getting a 2zz. (Changing because overheats, did everything to fix but its not working.) I have a 05 and 06 xB, (05 has problems, therefore swapping) and my 06 is all original, 433k miles, owned since 07.
Thank you for posting all your info, your car is amazing! I love how you’ve kept it mostly stock. I have dreamed of doing this swap for so long. Now I will start hoarding parts.
@ProGamer-qm9xx the Xa has a one-piece engine harness; it runs from the engine components directly to the ecu. When performing this swap on a 04/05 Xa, you can use the Matrix XRS ecu for a sort of plug and play setup. There are still a substantial number of wiring changes needed, but the engine will start this way. The wiring changes have been well documented on the ScionLife forums. The post is a sticky.
Thanks for uploading this video! I saw your post on Scionlife when I first bought my xA and it's nice to see and hear it running! I'll be checking out your pull video, too!
Nice swap but do a new video of you explaining it with the car off because a can’t hear anything please 🙏🏼 in very interesting I have a xb gen 1 and will love that engine in my car
Did you swap axles? I have a 2006 scion xb that I'm looking to do this swap on and don't want to switch to 5 lug wheels. I want to keep the 4 lug and keep it looking stock.
It requires different axles. The 2zz c60 transmission uses a larger diameter axle. I used 2006 and up Yaris wheel hubs, machined down to fit the OEM XA/Xb wheel bearings. This way, you can use the original 4 lug wheels, OEM XA brakes, OEM replacement bearings, and OEM MR2 Spyder axles.
@@TheJimBravo awesome thank you I just read the whole write up on the forum. I've been thinking about this for about 4 years. I owned a Pontiac vibe gt with 2zz and a celiaca gts with 2zz so much better then the 1nz in the xa/xb. I will get there eventually but always wanted to keep the 4 lug so it looked stock. Thank you for doing this I really appreciate it man. Next few months I will be starting this process with the awesome write up you did. Again thank you for all the great information.
@Aline Elias there is a substantial amount of the frame rail on both sides that needs to be cut and boxed for the engine and transmission to fit. You should check out my write up on scionlife if you're interested.
I believe there is/was a good shot of it in the scionlife thread linked in the description. I had some Google drive issues and haven't confirmed all of my pics made it back properly. Essentially it's the XA side transmission mount, Xa rear mount and modified bracket, Celica GTS passenger side engine mount bracket that's been cut in half, welded back together, and attached to the Xa mount, Celica GTS front mount and bracket attached to a custom front crossmember, though the front mount may not be necessary if the other mounts are in good shape.
It's not for sale at the moment. I did have it listed it for sale a couple of years ago, but got very little interest. I thought $2,500 was a steal! We're likely going to hang onto it now.
Does the 2zz fit in the scion without going into the drywall? I've got basically the same car and I want to do this engine/trans swap. My cars an automatic right now.
On the firewall side it feels similar to the stock engine. On the front side the intake manifold sticks out further and it would make contact with the radiator hose assembly. The left and right frame rails are really where the clearance issues are. This is a pretty big commitment due to the material removal needed. I am pretty confident though that the stock 1nz engine can be put back in with very little effort if needed.
I would imagine as much as $3,000 for parts; 2zz engine/trans, ecu, axles, hubs, some amount of maintenance parts, etc. Labor is tricky. The last time I charged for an engine swap was a decade or more ago, and it didn't require chassis modification. I'd take a wild guess that $2,000 would cover it. I could be far off.
Appreciate it, brother. It's a fun car. It's just sitting for 99% of its life, with an occasional trip to the store to keep things pliable. If it were in excellent shape and I thought I could get a reasonable amount of cash for it, I'd consider selling again. As it is now, I wouldn't get any amount of money that I would do anything worthwhile with. My plan in the next 6 months is to have a shop clean up the swap, mainly replace the worn engine mounts, fix the oil pan drain threads, and potentially fabricate the powersteering lines and mount the MR2 pump. Then (depending on how much the mechanical repairs cost), have a body shop spend my money on it. I'm just out of free time to spend on it. Work, kids, wife, house, and other misc things have my time for the near future.
There is a vid of it being driven. You should take a look. The purpose of this video was to give a brief walkaround and description of how the swap was completed.

That xA must absolutely fly.
I prefer the XD, because the instrument cluster is behind the steering wheel. It's overall a way better car in both looks and reliability.
Great job on the swap. I’m in the process of swapping my xB. I tried looking up your pinouts to compare but it would not pull up.
Thanks! I think I'm at fault for the missing pinouts. I'll re-upload them this evening.
@@TheJimBravo yeah let me know. I’m pretty sure I moved everything I was supposed to. One of the wire/pin I was unsure of was MREL on the XRS ecu.
