  • As summer sets in, it''s getting hotter and hotter, and mosquitoes are once more a fact of life in Taiwan. Strategies for mosquito-management are almost as numerous as the bugs themselves. A new LED lamp promises to drive them away with a special wavelength of light, though academics say it may just be less attractive than a normal light. Meanwhile over in Japan, citizens are experimenting with attracting mosquitoes with a special sound, to multiply swatting opportunities. Let''s take a look.
Mosquitoes are one of the biggest drags of summer. One entrepreneur posted this video online.
It shows a special lamp that he claims is mosquito-repellant. Mosquitoes flock around a normal white lamp, but the yellow lamp is bug-free.

You see, the light it emits has a wavelength of about 590 nanometers. We isolate that wavelength with an LED light. That’s how it drives away the mosquitoes, because they are afraid of that wavelength and they go away.
But that explanation is not quite in line with the science, says this bug expert.

We can see yellow light, but some bugs cannot. Some bugs may be reluctant to approach yellow light. Whether that’s because they’re being repelled, or rather that they just have no inclination to approach, is hard to distinguish. Whether they’re driven away or whether they’re just not being attracted.
Meanwhile, one Japanese internet user has found an economic way to deal with mosquitoes. They found a noise that is supposed to attract mosquitoes and played it over their bed. Before long this mosquito landed on the cover and sat quite still, allowing them to easily swat it.

Male mosquitoes fly in swarms, and the nearby females will approach them. That’s when the males get a chance to mate with the females. So they let out these sounds to attract the females.
The noise used to attract mosquitoes sounds like a male mosquito’s call, and attracts females. But different species of mosquito have different habits and one trick won’t work for them all. Experts say the best plan is to make sure your environment doesn’t leave room for the bugs to breed.

This is just because of the yellow. You do not need to by specific ones like those; just apply a thin layer of yellow paint, or case the light with thin yellow paper.
