I'd just like to point out that trumpets couldn't play chromatically back then. They were restricted to the notes of the harmonic series. If you look at what Mendelssohn wrote, his writing is strictly limited to those notes. I don't think a completion that doesn't take this fact into account does justice to Mendelssohn.
@@gerdprengel7616I'd like to add onto that; horns were also limited to the harmonic series. I would write whatever key Mendelssohn originally set the brass to and have it only play notes from that. Also, transposing instruments don't switch very often within movements, so I would tacet clarinets, horns, and trumpets wherever the key isn't right for them. For example, I see there is a moment where the key goes from 0 sharps to 3 sharps. That would be a moment where the A clarinet could be used instead of the Bb.
If this was sketched in 1845 that was after Wagner had written Tannhäuser. And by that time valved trumpets were a thing. Just because Schumann and later Brahms never used them, did not mean they weren't available to them.
@@Quotenwagnerianer True, but if you study Mendelssohn's music, he only uses the harmonic series with a few exceptions, but those exceptions can be achieved with stopping so it's pretty clear he only wrote for natural trumpets and horns.
What great work you did! I tried something similar with an unfinished sketch by Schumann back some years… I will side with what was already said, horns and trumpets are used slightly too chromatically for that period and the composer. If you want, you can use trombones for that purpose, since they were much higher in pitch than today and could easily take over what you sometimes gave the horns..

Thank you for the hint!
@@gerdprengel7616 Otherwise you did a great job, just remember to always do the full research before creating a completion. 😉

I adore the theme that occurs at 1:35... very heroic!
Typical Mendelssohn style.

Thank you, Lucky, I will see to adjust that
